Ben Healy Revs Up with Tour de France Looming Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/GettyImages-2266463612.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap fp-contentTarget\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"mb-base-loose flex flex-wrap gap-(--spacing-base)\"><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"fp-remove flex items-center justify-start gap-(--spacing-base-tight)\"><span class=\"font-utility-2 font-bold text-primary\">Shane Stokes<\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<div class=\"pub-date font-utility-2 text-secondary\">Updated June 6, 2026 05:50PM<\/div>\n<div class=\"mt-base-loose\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tts-player relative w-full\">\n<div id=\"beyondwords-player\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last year Ben Healy donned yellow, won a stage and finished ninth overall in what was his best Tour de France to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aspect-video\">\n<p>And while he\u2019s had a messed up spring thanks to a fracture sustained in the Itzulia Basque Country which put him out of the Ardennes Classics, there are suggestions that the Irish EF Education EasyPost rider could actually be ahead of where he was at this time last year.<\/p>\n<p>If so, that bodes very well for the Tour in July.<\/p>\n<p>First up, though, is the Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes, starting Sunday. Healy will be up against the likes of Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) there, as well as other gifted riders such as Isaac del Toro and Jo\u00e3o Almeida (UAE Emirates XRG), Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Juan Ayuso and Matthias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Cian Uijtdebroeks (Movistar Team), Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) and Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility).<\/p>\n<p>Healy is upbeat heading into the race, excited by what is to come.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I0-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy training resumed pretty quickly after what would have been the Ardennes, and since then it\u2019s been smooth sailing,\u201d he said in a release from his team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing those races was a disappointment, but if there\u2019s a silver lining, it\u2019s that April was probably a better time to have my reset before building towards the Tour. I\u2019ve not missed any prep, and I\u2019m good to go for the Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes and then, of course, the Tour de France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tour is of course the top season goal for the swashbuckling attacker, but directeur sportif Charly Wegelius believes Healy can shrug off his near two-month gap in races and do something special in the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a chance that he\u2019s a little further along than initially planned compared to this time last year, and that\u2019s certainly a good thing. We know that Ben is feeling good, and I wouldn\u2019t exclude an off-day somewhere in the race, but he\u2019ll also have more good days than he had last year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I1-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see where everyone is at after the first stage, which is unusually hard for an opening stage, but I think that the race has the potential to open up and for our riders to be successful in targeting stages. He had placed third and fifth in Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge and Fl\u00e8che Wallonne, then was away from racing until the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9, the old title of the Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes.<\/p>\n<p>His showing there was modest: ninth on the last stage was the highlight, with an overall position of just 37th.<\/p>\n<p>However his Tour was a big success, with his stage win and stint in yellow being followed by his best-ever GC finish.<\/p>\n<p>Healy was hoping to put in another big campaign in this year\u2019s Ardennes Classics but his crash prior to the opening time trial at the Itzulia Basque Country race left him battered and bruised. He finished the race but found out afterwards that he had a non-displaced sacral fracture. In fact, in Dunbar\u2019s case, he had two incidents of misfortune; a fall on stage two of Paris-Nice, and then a bizarre incident involving a motorist in Monaco.<\/p>\n<p>This occurred on March 12, just three days after his crash in Paris-Nice, underlining the complete misfortune he suffered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I3-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was just moving around on my city bike,\u201d he said in a Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling release. \u201cA scooter came from my left side, did not respect the right of way, and basically sent me flying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I didn\u2019t think it was anything too serious. But after a few seconds my ankle started turning blue and I immediately understood that something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dunbar was later diagnosed with severe bone bruising on the Medial Malleolus in his ankle.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been out of competition ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes are driven people and he found the lack of direction something that was hard to accept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really difficult period,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the beginning of the season, the Giro was my main objective. Suddenly, that was no longer possible. I had seven weeks completely off the bike. I wanted to keep working physically, but with my leg immobilised there was very little I could do, apart from some upper-body work \u2014 which is not always ideal for a cyclist.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I4-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI found myself without a real target, without anything concrete in front of me, apart from recovery. That is not easy. As a rider, you are used to having structure every day. That\u2019s something riders never get used to but, on the other hand, one plus is that they are more adept in returning afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The misfortune of a fall teaches you how to heal; do it enough times and resilience often grows stronger and stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Dunbar said that pacing himself during his recovery was very crucial. He knows coming back too soon would be counter-productive, and so too skipping important steps in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to build things properly and make sure every block of work is completed before thinking about the next one,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>And now it\u2019s a question of when he will be back in action. He had seven weeks completely off the bike, and then returned with indoor roller sessions. But at least now I am back doing what I need to do. I can ride my bike again, I can start building properly, and I can feel like a cyclist again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t wait to push hard on the pedals again in training\u201d Dunbar says. \u201cAnd more than anything, I can\u2019t wait to put a race number back on the pocket of my Q36.5 jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s now heading into the summer and if this year\u2019s Tour de France is too close for him to consider riding, he is determined to be back in competitive action soon.<\/p>\n<p>His racing programme is yet to be determined but the Irishman\u2019s team suggests the Vuelta a Burgos or the Cl\u00e1sica de San Sebasti\u00e1n could be possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond those, there\u2019s another race that is very much on his mind, providing things go to plan.<\/p>\n<p>He won two stages in the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a in 2024 and, almost two years on from that, he remains psyched by what he did.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I6-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Vuelta is a race I really love\u201d he said. \u201cI have some great memories there and, of course, I would love to be back.
