become the tallest church globally

Pope Leo XIV will inaugurate the central spire during an evening Mass on June 10 exactly 100 years after architect Antoni Gaudí died

The papal visit anchors a broader weeklong Spanish journey that includes meetings with King Felipe VI and migrant advocacy groups in the Canary Islands

Barcelona’s Sagrada Família has officially reached its maximum vertical height. The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ brings the monumental structure to 172.5 meters above the Catalan capital. Construction teams moved the central spire into place in February to establish the basilica as the tallest church in the world. The architectural milestone honors the original vision of Catalan designer Antoni Gaudí. The building remains far from complete, but this latest addition dominates the city skyline and caps a major phase of development.

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to inaugurate the structure on June 10. This specific date marks exactly one century since the death of Gaudí. The pontiff will celebrate an evening Mass at the basilica to bless the newly finished tower. Spanish bishops confirmed the architect is currently on the path to possible sainthood but will not be canonized during this trip. The ceremony provides a profound cultural moment for Spain by intertwining historical legacy with modern architectural achievement.

The Barcelona stop serves as the centerpiece of a broader apostolic journey across Spain spanning June 6 to June 12. The religious leader will begin the week in Madrid for high-level meetings with government officials, parliament members, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. He will also lead a youth prayer vigil recalling the 2011 World Youth Day hosted by Pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Luis Argüello of Valladolid emphasized the importance of the parliamentary address by noting that such papal speeches to foreign legislatures are rare and often define a pontificate.

Beyond the architectural celebration, the trip highlights urgent social issues. Carrying out a wish of his predecessor Pope Francis, the pontiff will travel to the Canary Islands to meet with migrant reception centers. The Spanish archipelago remains a major gateway for migrants traveling from West Africa. Spain is currently advancing a measure to legalize the status of approximately 500,000 unauthorized residents. The papal focus on dignified treatment for migrants aligns with the national push for legal immigration pathways and adds a heavy geopolitical layer to the Sagrada Família inauguration week.

Sources

pbs.org

Related Stories

>LEGO Unveils Massive Architecture Sagrada Família Set to Honor Antoni Gaudí

>‘God of War Laufey’ Gives Faye Her Own Story in a Brand New PS5 Title

>Konami’s ‘Silent Hill: Townfall’ Is Releasing This September

        Find out more for barcelona

The Final Piece of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia Central Tower Has Been Installed

The completion of the Jesus Christ tower brings the iconic Barcelona structure to a maximum height of 172.5 meters.

Wu Tsang Reimagines the Tragedy of ‘Carmen’ in Barcelona

Rewriting the fate of one of opera’s most famous heroines.

Looking for more suggestions for barcelona?

We got you covered.

Sources

1Articles

Editor Assistant

Mai Vo

    barcelonaAntoni GaudiSagrada FamiliaPope Leo XIV

pbs.org

Pope will inaugurate Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia tower and meet with migrants in June trip to Spain

[analyse_source url=”https://hypebeast.com/2026/6/sagrada-familia-tower-of-jesus-christ-reaches-172-5-meters”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://image-cdn.hypb.st/https%3A%2F%2Fhypebeast.com%2Fimage%2F2026%2F06%2F05%2Fsagrada-familia-tower-of-jesus-christ-reaches-172-5-meters-tw.jpg?w=1080&cbr=1&q=90&fit=max”] Design 17 Hrs ago 1.5K Views 0 Comments Comments Save Sources 1Articles Editor Assistant Mai Vo Share this article Lluis Gene / Afp Via Getty Images Design 17 Hrs ago 1.5K Views 0 Comments Comments Save Summary Barcelona’s Sagrada Família has reached a height of 172.5 meters with the placement of the Tower of […]

[2
226,39
post-1974799","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-crawlmanager","tag-hypebeast-com
["GET
