A red puppet standing 2 feet tall has enraged the internet. More specifically, the New York Knicks\u2019 fanbase.<\/p>\n

Elmo, the lovably furry Muppet from the children\u2019s show \u201cSesame Street,\u201d dared to wish both the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs good luck in the NBA Finals on Wednesday, writing on X: \u201cElmo hopes both teams have fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, thousands of New Yorkers have accused Elmo of treason \u2014 the fictional Sesame Street is located in Manhattan, and the real-life city officially renamed the intersection between Broadway and West 63rd Street as Sesame Street to celebrate the show\u2019s 50th anniversary in 2019.<\/p>\n

Responses to Elmo\u2019s post ranged from \u201cPICK A SIDE COWARD\u201d to \u201cCmon on now, Elmo. Oscar and Mr. Hooper not gonna let you back in the bodega if you don\u2019t support NY.\u201d Others have circulated the clip of \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm\u201d star Larry David jokingly attacking Elmo<\/a> during a segment of the \u201cToday\u201d show.<\/p>\n

That attack from David came in response to another viral tweet from Elmo, who simply asked: \u201cHow is everybody doing?\u201d The post drew tens of thousands of responses, mostly from users trauma-dumping their hardships.<\/p>\n

While \u201cSesame Street\u201d did not immediately respond to an interview request Friday to speak with the character, Elmo did appear to take notice of the rage he stirred this week, quoting his own previous tweet with a post Thursday that hardly read like an apology: \u201cKNICKS that last message! Elmo didn\u2019t mean to SPUR you on!\u201d<\/p>\n

Elmo\u2019s post drew a reaction from former New York City mayor Eric Adams, who responded with a \u201cBruh\u201d gif, while the Empire State Building\u2019s page appeared to be in denial: \u201cYou picked the Knicks let\u2019s be for real, Elmo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other \u201cSesame Street\u201d characters have not echoed Elmo\u2019s fence-sitting, as the accounts for Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch haven\u2019t mentioned the finals (yet). And while Grover hasn\u2019t voiced his support for the Knicks, many users in Elmo\u2019s replies are calling for him to be more like his blue-furred friend, posting photos of Grover sitting between former Knicks stars Carmelo Anthony and Amar\u2019e Stoudemire from an episode in 2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elmo was absent from that segment.<\/p>\n
