Pre-order a copy of the magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/b6j0xs-f5.myshopify.com\/cart\/57910243655944:1?channel=buy_button\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a scene at the start of <em>Industry\u2019s<\/em> new season where everyone\u2019s favourite antihero, Harper Stern, is inspecting <\/span><span>herself in the mirror wearing nothing but a strap-on. We see her stroke it, feeling the weight of a new kind of power she\u2019s stepped into\u2013and consider what she should do with it. The same insatiable ambition lives inside Myha\u2019la, who plays Harper. Or rather, Myha\u2019la\u2019s ambition lives inside Harper. \u201cI don\u2019t really take no for an answer, I just don\u2019t do it in the way she does,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m a kill-them-with-kindness girl, not a bulldoze-a-bitch girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On my way to meet Myha\u2019la in a Manhattan cafe at 11am, she calls me at precisely 10:59. \u201cLet\u2019s meet on the corner <\/span><span>of Canal and Baxter.\u201d She knows a good spot for matcha. On the quick walk through sunny Chinatown, she explains how coffee makes her anxious, as do large crowds. She had a panic attack during Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s Coachella set, she tells me, throwing her head back in laughter. \u201cI take my work seriously, but not myself,\u201d she says. It\u2019s true: she\u2019s cutthroat in <em>Industry<\/em>, which follows a group of young people navigating the pressure-cooker world of finance. Off-screen, however, in direct contrast to the intensity of the show, she often posts TikTok videos dancing with castmates and real-life friends Ken Leung (Eric) and Marisa Abela (Yasmin).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la, known professionally by her first name since 2023, describes her role in <em>Industry<\/em> as fate. \u201cOne hundred per cent, I am meant to play Harper,\u201d she says. \u201cI believe I was supposed to do it for a plethora of reasons \u2013 some I probably don\u2019t even know yet \u2013 but I think that being the person I am colours her in a way that is important to me.\u201d She landed the role after sending an audition tape filmed while tipsy and then leaving the US for the first time for a chemistry read in Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"8448c70c-4d6e-4928-b3db-b4580036d835\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1350\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/6\/1446014.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.52\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Myha\u2019la\" class=\"img\" height=\"887\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1350\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/6\/1446014.jpg\" width=\"1350\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"caption\">Organza jacket, denim skirt and lace tights Valentino, leather Rockstud pumps <span class=\"nowrap\">Valentino Garavani<\/span><\/span><span class=\"credit\">Photography Jessica Madavo, styling <span class=\"nowrap\">Marcus Cuffie<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la speaks of Harper like a sister: she\u2019s proud of her resilience, sympathetic to her flaws, and happy to play her <\/span><span>from a position of power as the series moves beyond the trading floor. \u201cI\u2019m inspired by her ability to set and maintain <\/span><span>her boundaries, and I\u2019ve taken note of that,\u201d she says. Myha\u2019la puts Harper\u2019s shortcomings, of which there are many, down to her being human. Harper is a morally ambiguous but sympathetic character; she\u2019s willing to fabricate her academic credentials, undercut and manipulate people and dabble in insider trading to get ahead, but she only does so to survive in a dog-eat-dog environment. Her high-risk, short-only tactics eventually bring her closer to a Robin Hood-type figure, taking down companies that are unethical or fraudulent. Myha\u2019la relishes playing someone so complex. \u201cWhat I like about Harper is that she\u2019s not your typical Black girl on screen. She\u2019s not a perfect woman or business person. She is not [idealised] in any way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since being introduced to the world through Harper, Myha\u2019la has delivered standout performances in films including <\/span><span><em>Bodies Bodies Bodies<\/em>, <em>Swiped<\/em>, <em>Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/em> and, most recently, horror comedy <em>They Will Kill You<\/em>. \u201cI love people; I want to get inside their minds and figure out what makes them tick,\u201d she says of her approach to acting. \u201cAs long as the character has something to fight for or fight against, then I\u2019m into it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la never thought she\u2019d end up as a \u201cknown person\u201d. The fame, the fashion campaigns \u2013 none of it was planned. Acting has always been the dream for the star, born Myha\u2019la Herrold in San Jose, California, but her sights were set initially on a more modest career on Broadway. When her mother was pregnant with her, she went to see a local production of <em>Once on This Island<\/em> with some friends. As the story goes, Myha\u2019la started kicking during the performance. \u201cMy love of this art form really does feel beyond,\u201d she says. \u201cI do feel like it\u2019s my calling, and I would die if I didn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<span>I know there\u2019s that unhealed, unserved part of me that wants people to know I\u2019m part of the cool kids\u2019 group\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>One of Myha\u2019la\u2019s earliest inspirations was Bernadette Peters\u2019 performance in Stephen Sondheim\u2019s 1986 musical <\/span><span><em>Into the Woods<\/em>. Peters\u2019 take on the witch, loosely based on the fairytale villain from Rapunzel, has stuck with her for years; she speaks with awe about the character\u2019s transformation from \u201cmangled and disgusting\u201d to beautiful with \u201cbuff arms\u201d. She went to a Catholic school in San Jose because of its theatre programme (she was constantly breaking the rules there, which she says was very \u201cpunk rock\u201d of her). She was always laser-focused on acting and even played the witch in a high school production of <em>Into the Woods<\/em>, emulating Peters\u2019 performance as closely as she could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la is convinced she\u2019ll return to the stage one day. It\u2019s all part of the plan. Prior to <em>Industry<\/em>, she had lost out <\/span><span>on a part in some \u201crandom FX series\u201d that she swore would change her life, as well as a role in Gypsy on Broadway. \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer that what is meant for me will find me in the time and place it\u2019s meant to find me,\u201d she says. Until then, she\u2019s found a new love in TV and film, and she still sings around the house (and on her Stories) for fun \u201call the time\u201d. \u201cSinging is what happens when words are not enough,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I have a lot of big feelings in general.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la has never doubted her path, but it hasn\u2019t always been smooth sailing. \u201cI had friends, but because I was a big <\/span><span>theatre nerd who was always dramatic and was kind of too honest, people at school were embarrassed by me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt made me wonder, \u2018Why are people not proud of being my friend?\u2019\u201d To this day, when she makes a new friend, she often finds herself seeking reassurance. \u201cIt feels very Freudian. Her rationale <\/span><span>is simple: she wants people, including her husband, to know how proud she is to be in their lives. Rivera is also her biggest fan: he watched season one of <em>Industry<\/em> and sent her a DM asking to interview her for a university project. \u201cWe talked for 45 minutes and I was immediately in love with him,\u201d she says. \u201cThe body knows what the heart wants.\u201d They held an intimate wedding in 2025 but waited a full year before posting the photos on Instagram (though she says this wasn\u2019t intentional).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la has starred in campaigns for Loewe, Miu Miu and Stella McCartney, and recently attended Alessandro Michele\u2019s A\/W26 Valentino show in Rome. She puts her love of fashion down to her mum, who she describes as \u201ccrunchy\u201d. \u201cBeing fabulous on a budget was always our thing,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s where thrifting came in.\u201d She resented her school uniform and longed for the days when she could wear what <\/span><span>she wanted. Now, she\u2019s become known for her power-suit method dressing and distinct sense of personal style, mixing brands like Luar and Valentino with vintage pieces. In fact, she longs for the time before vintage resale became popular, when it was far easier to waltz into a thrift store and snag a pair of Prada loafers. \u201cThrifting has been commodified in a way that I find really annoying,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Halfway through our conversation, I have a confession for Myha\u2019la: when I first watched <em>Industry<\/em>, I started buying stock in unconventional places, convinced I would make loads of money (I didn\u2019t). I wanted to be like Harper. But Myha\u2019la says she never learned the money stuff herself. \u201cMy first paycheck? I blew the whole thing,\u201d she says. \u201cI paid $15,000 at the end of that season to fly three of my best friends and mum to Paris for five days and rented a houseboat.\u201d She doesn\u2019t have any regrets, even if she had to stay at Lena Dunham\u2019s house during the pandemic because she couldn\u2019t afford her rent. \u201cI love spending money. I love shopping. I love eating. I love doing stuff with my friends,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you see a newly famous person, you can bet they\u2019re broke nine times out of ten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m catching Myha\u2019la days after a major life milestone: her 30th birthday. She says she feels like she was \u201calways meant to be 30\u201d and her Saturn return in her late 20s had been \u201ckicking her ass\u201d, including some health issues she\u2019s only now recovering from: \u201cMy whole gut got fucked because I was in and out of hospital too many times, on too many antibiotics, in a short period of time. It was horrible. I had to rebuild my gut by rebuilding my entire lifestyle: food, exercise, sleep.\u201d Now, she\u2019s a bit of a wellness guru, mostly because she\u2019s had to be. The morning we meet, the actor has spent ten minutes on her new vibration plate. \u201cIf you\u2019re not into wellness, you must be well. They connected her to her ancestors (but didn\u2019t give any specific names). \u201cMy spiritual guides were all really funny,\u201d she says. \u201cThey were roasting me, and I felt not alone, like I had a support group of people looking out for me.\u201d This prompted her spiritual journey, although manifestation has always been a part of her vocabulary. \u201cMy mum always told me I was a very powerful person. I very much believe she\u2019s a good witch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As we finish our matchas, Myha\u2019la talks openly about what it would take to make her feel like she\u2019d \u201cmade it\u201d big. \u201cI\u2019m living a dream I didn\u2019t even have, which is amazing, and I\u2019m grateful and shocked every day,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the bar always moves because I don\u2019t own a house and I want to retire my mum fully.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a world of possibilities opening up for Myha\u2019la, with <em>Industry\u2019s<\/em> final season on the horizon alongside other <\/span><span>projects she\u2019s unable to talk about right now. We see her stroke it, feeling the weight of a new kind of power she\u2019s stepped into\u2013and consider what she should do with it. The same insatiable ambition lives inside Myha\u2019la, who plays Harper. Or rather, Myha\u2019la\u2019s ambition lives inside Harper. \u201cI don\u2019t really take no for an answer, I just don\u2019t do it in the way she does,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m a kill-them-with-kindness girl, not a bulldoze-a-bitch girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On my way to meet Myha\u2019la in a Manhattan cafe at 11am, she calls me at precisely 10:59. \u201cLet\u2019s meet on the corner <\/span><span>of Canal and Baxter.\u201d She knows a good spot for matcha. On the quick walk through sunny Chinatown, she explains how coffee makes her anxious, as do large crowds. She had a panic attack during Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s Coachella set, she tells me, throwing her head back in laughter. \u201cI take my work seriously, but not myself,\u201d she says. It\u2019s true: she\u2019s cutthroat in <em>Industry<\/em>, which follows a group of young people navigating the pressure-cooker world of finance. Myha\u2019la puts Harper\u2019s shortcomings, of which there are many, down to her being human. Harper is a morally ambiguous but sympathetic character; she\u2019s willing to fabricate her academic credentials, undercut and manipulate people and dabble in insider trading to get ahead, but she only does so to survive in a dog-eat-dog environment. Her high-risk, short-only tactics eventually bring her closer to a Robin Hood-type figure, taking down companies that are unethical or fraudulent. Myha\u2019la relishes playing someone so complex. \u201cWhat I like about Harper is that she\u2019s not your typical Black girl on screen. She\u2019s not a perfect woman or business person. She is not [idealised] in any way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since being introduced to the world through Harper, Myha\u2019la has delivered standout performances in films including <\/span><span><em>Bodies Bodies Bodies<\/em>, <em>Swiped<\/em>, <em>Dead Man\u2019s Wire<\/em> and, most recently, horror comedy <em>They Will Kill You<\/em>. \u201cI love people; I want to get inside their minds and figure out what makes them tick,\u201d she says of her approach to acting. \u201cAs long as the character has something to fight for or fight against, then I\u2019m into it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la never thought she\u2019d end up as a \u201cknown person\u201d. The fame, the fashion campaigns \u2013 none of it was planned. Acting has always been the dream for the star, born Myha\u2019la Herrold in San Jose, California, but her sights were set initially on a more modest career on Broadway. When her mother was pregnant with her, she went to see a local production of <em>Once on This Island<\/em> with some friends. As the story goes, Myha\u2019la started kicking during the performance. \u201cMy love of this art form really does feel beyond,\u201d she says. \u201cI do feel like it\u2019s my calling, and I would die if I didn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<span>I know there\u2019s that unhealed, unserved part of me that wants people to know I\u2019m part of the cool kids\u2019 group\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>One of Myha\u2019la\u2019s earliest inspirations was Bernadette Peters\u2019 performance in Stephen Sondheim\u2019s 1986 musical <\/span><span><em>Into the Woods<\/em>. Peters\u2019 take on the witch, loosely based on the fairytale villain from Rapunzel, has stuck with her for years; she speaks with awe about the character\u2019s transformation from \u201cmangled and disgusting\u201d to beautiful with \u201cbuff arms\u201d. She went to a Catholic school in San Jose because of its theatre programme (she was constantly breaking the rules there, which she says was very \u201cpunk rock\u201d of her). She was always laser-focused on acting and even played the witch in a high school production of <em>Into the Woods<\/em>, emulating Peters\u2019 performance as closely as she could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la is convinced she\u2019ll return to the stage one day. It\u2019s all part of the plan. Prior to <em>Industry<\/em>, she had lost out <\/span><span>on a part in some \u201crandom FX series\u201d that she swore would change her life, as well as a role in Gypsy on Broadway. \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer that what is meant for me will find me in the time and place it\u2019s meant to find me,\u201d she says. Until then, she\u2019s found a new love in TV and film, and she still sings around the house (and on her Stories) for fun \u201call the time\u201d. \u201cSinging is what happens when words are not enough,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I have a lot of big feelings in general.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la has never doubted her path, but it hasn\u2019t always been smooth sailing. \u201cI had friends, but because I was a big <\/span><span>theatre nerd who was always dramatic and was kind of too honest, people at school were embarrassed by me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt made me wonder, \u2018Why are people not proud of being my friend?\u2019\u201d To this day, when she makes a new friend, she often finds herself seeking reassurance. \u201cIt feels very Freudian. Her rationale <\/span><span>is simple: she wants people, including her husband, to know how proud she is to be in their lives. Rivera is also her biggest fan: he watched season one of <em>Industry<\/em> and sent her a DM asking to interview her for a university project. \u201cWe talked for 45 minutes and I was immediately in love with him,\u201d she says. \u201cThe body knows what the heart wants.\u201d They held an intimate wedding in 2025 but waited a full year before posting the photos on Instagram (though she says this wasn\u2019t intentional).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Myha\u2019la has starred in campaigns for Loewe, Miu Miu and Stella McCartney, and recently attended Alessandro Michele\u2019s A\/W26 Valentino show in Rome. She puts her love of fashion down to her mum, who she describes as \u201ccrunchy\u201d. \u201cBeing fabulous on a budget was always our thing,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s where thrifting came in.\u201d She resented her school uniform and longed for the days when she could wear what <\/span><span>she wanted. Now, she\u2019s become known for her power-suit method dressing and distinct sense of personal style, mixing brands like Luar and Valentino with vintage pieces. In fact, she longs for the time before vintage resale became popular, when it was far easier to waltz into a thrift store and snag a pair of Prada loafers. \u201cThrifting has been commodified in a way that I find really annoying,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Halfway through our conversation, I have a confession for Myha\u2019la: when I first watched <em>Industry<\/em>, I started buying stock in unconventional places, convinced I would make loads of money (I didn\u2019t). I wanted to be like Harper. But Myha\u2019la says she never learned the money stuff herself. \u201cMy first paycheck? I blew the whole thing,\u201d she says. \u201cI paid $15,000 at the end of that season to fly three of my best friends and mum to Paris for five days and rented a houseboat.\u201d She doesn\u2019t have any regrets, even if she had to stay at Lena Dunham\u2019s house during the pandemic because she couldn\u2019t afford her rent. \u201cI love spending money. I love shopping. I love eating. I love doing stuff with my friends,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you see a newly famous person, you can bet they\u2019re broke nine times out of ten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m catching Myha\u2019la days after a major life milestone: her 30th birthday. She says she feels like she was \u201calways meant to be 30\u201d and her Saturn return in her late 20s had been \u201ckicking her ass\u201d, including some health issues she\u2019s only now recovering from: \u201cMy whole gut got fucked because I was in and out of hospital too many times, on too many antibiotics, in a short period of time. It was horrible. I had to rebuild my gut by rebuilding my entire lifestyle: food, exercise, sleep.\u201d Now, she\u2019s a bit of a wellness guru, mostly because she\u2019s had to be. The morning we meet, the actor has spent ten minutes on her new vibration plate. \u201cIf you\u2019re not into wellness, you must be well. They connected her to her ancestors (but didn\u2019t give any specific names). \u201cMy spiritual guides were all really funny,\u201d she says. \u201cThey were roasting me, and I felt not alone, like I had a support group of people looking out for me.\u201d This prompted her spiritual journey, although manifestation has always been a part of her vocabulary. \u201cMy mum always told me I was a very powerful person. I very much believe she\u2019s a good witch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As we finish our matchas, Myha\u2019la talks openly about what it would take to make her feel like she\u2019d \u201cmade it\u201d big. \u201cI\u2019m living a dream I didn\u2019t even have, which is amazing, and I\u2019m grateful and shocked every day,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the bar always moves because I don\u2019t own a house and I want to retire my mum fully.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a world of possibilities opening up for Myha\u2019la, with <em>Industry\u2019s<\/em> final season on the horizon alongside other <\/span><span>projects she\u2019s unable to talk about right now.
