Her death was acknowledged by sources including curators and the magazine <em>Textile\/Art<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tArcier was born in 1939 in Bellac, France, and made her way as an office worker and self-taught artist who \u201cfrom 1970 on, produced her most striking works, crocheting wool and cotton, and knitting metal\u2014with each piece demanding up to a year\u2019s work,\u201d according to Centre Pompidou\u2019s AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research &amp; Exhibitions. \u201cThrough her appropriation of this female cultural apprenticeship, she wittily conjured up her social confinement, trying\u2014to use her own words\u2014to \u2018make everyone aware of the huge labour of women.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmong her notable artworks are <em>Faire ses provisions<\/em>\u00a0(1971), large shopping bags made with threads from garter stitching, and <em>Au nom du p\u00e8re<\/em>\u00a0(1975\u20131976), a giant sculpture of a naked woman whose breasts are being groped that resides in the Pompidou\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStavroula Coulianidis, an independent curator who started working with Archer in 2022, wrote on Instagram: \u201cKnown for her feminist activism since the early 1970s\u2014particularly her involvement in the Women\u2019s Liberation Movement and in the creation of the newspaper Le Torchon br\u00fble\u2014Raymonde, a completely self-taught artist, developed a body of sculptural work connected to the condition of women within patriarchal society, a reality she sought to expose and critique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCoulianidis continued: \u201cShopping, cleaning, sewing, and dressmaking became the basis for works in which everyday objects were enlarged to monumental proportions, amplifying their omnipresence and burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[analyse_source url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/raymonde-arcier-textile-artist-dead-1234788138\/&#8221;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260510110758-0fb42fbb-ec3d-4983-80e1-f543f1bced91.jpeg?w=1024&#8243;] Raymonde Arcier, who brought attention to women\u2019s work by way of an art practice based in fabric and textiles of different kinds, died in May at the age of 86.
