Visma-Lease a Bike is losing its lead Tour de France tactician in what\u2019s bombshell news for Jonas Vingegaard and the Killer Bees.<\/p>\n
The team confirmed on Tuesday that head of racing Grischa Niermann will leave at the end of August.<\/p>\n
The experienced staffer has been removed from Visma-Lease a Bike\u2019s preparations for the Tour de France and will not be leading Vingegaard against Tadej Poga\u010dar in July.<\/p>\n
The news was first broken\u00a0by Daniel Benson and Dutch outlet Wielerlits<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n These reports stated Niermann will join rivals at Lidl-Trek. Neither Niermann nor Lidl-Trek have confirmed this side of the move.<\/p>\n Marc Reef \u2013 the DS who was at the forefront of Vingegaard\u2019s annihilation of the Giro d\u2019Italia \u2013 will replace Niermann at the top of V-LAB.<\/p>\n Speaking Tuesday in a media conference, team CEO Richard Plugge said Niermann will stay on in only a background role until he leaves on September 1.<\/p>\n Reef has been overseeing all Tour de France preparations since Niermann handed notice.<\/p>\n Plugge said Tuesday that Niermann delivered the stunning news only \u201ca few weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile I am disappointed to see Grischa leave, I have tremendous confidence in Marc Reef as our new head of racing,\u201d Plugge said.<\/p>\n \u201cDeveloping and nurturing both riders and staff is part of this team\u2019s DNA. We also develop our coaches with the belief that they can continue to grow and take the next step in their careers,\u201d Plugge said. \u201cWith Grischa\u2019s departure, it is therefore a logical progression within the organization for Marc to join the sport management team of Visma-Lease a Bike.\u201d<\/p>\n Niermann has not yet confirmed his next moves.<\/p>\n The news marks an unprecedented redistribution of the brains at the top of the WorldTour.<\/p>\n Staffers like Niermann are as integral to a team\u2019s success as the riders in the saddle.<\/p>\n The German director pulled the strings on all the Visma team\u2019s grand tour victories, whether as Jumbo-Visma or Visma-Lease a Bike. He more recently piloted Wout van Aert to victory over Tadej Poga\u010dar at Paris-Roubaix.<\/p>\n The former racer first worked beneath Merijn Zeeman and stepped up a level in 2024 when Zeeman left Visma for a role in soccer.<\/p>\n Per reports by Benson and Wierlflits<\/em>, Niermann will replace Lidl-Trek long-standing general manager, Luca Guercilena.<\/p>\n The Italian has been at the very core of the Trek team since he joined in 2013.<\/p>\n Guercilena has been less active in recent years as he battled with health issues and was pushed to the sidelines when Lidl took a majority stake in the team last summer.<\/p>\n News of Niermann\u2019s imminent exit comes as Visma-Lease a Bike relishes its best season in years.<\/p>\n Van Aert won Paris-Roubaix, and Vingegaard looked back to his best at the Giro d\u2019Italia. The Dane seems in the best place to challenge Poga\u010dar at the Tour de France since he won the maillot jaune in 2023.<\/p>\n But the season has not been without its challenges.<\/p>\n The Killer Bees were in the spotlight in winter when Vingegaard and Matteo Jorgenson\u2019s trainer Tim Heemskerk left for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and GC star Simon Yates unexpectedly retired.<\/p>\n Reef has been on the scene at Visma-Lease a Bike since 2022.<\/p>\n He led Yates to his wild final-day win last year at the Giro and proved again with Vingegaard that he knows how to win a grand tour.<\/p>\n However, losing Niermann is not small news for the Dutch super team.<\/p>\n The staffer helped Vingegaard beat Poga\u010dar at the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 and has worked with team manager Richard Plugge for decades.<\/p>\n Niermann also raced with Rabobank before the team transitioned to its current identity.<\/p>\n Niermann is expected to become general manager at Lidl-Trek.<\/p>\n Andy Schleck \u2013 who was only recently promoted to deputy GM \u2013 is expected to become CEO of the now German-licensed team.<\/p>\n The news comes as just the latest shake-up at the wannabe superteam of Mads Pedersen, Derek Gee-West, Jonathan Milan, and Juan Ayuso.<\/p>\n Bernie Eisel and Andy and Frank Schleck were all reassigned management roles after Lidl took its majority hold of the team last summer.<\/p>\n However, the newly-revamped super team has not taken off in the way it expected after it saw a huge boost in resources from Lidl and piled cash into signing Ayuso.<\/p>\n Can Niermann put Lidl-Trek into the position of Visma-Lease a Bike?
