Gareth Edwards, the director of <em>Godzilla, Rogue One<\/em>, and <em>Jurassic World Rebirth,<\/em> said at an event this week that he is excited about using generative AI in filmmaking but, of course, has a few caveats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t see a reason why you wouldn\u2019t become interested in this stuff as a filmmaker,\u201d Edwards said at an Amazon event called \u201cAI on the Lot\u201d in Los Angeles, according to the Hollywood Reporter. \u201cIt\u2019s so clearly a tool that might be up there with the camera. It\u2019s going to be better than CGI. I\u2019m excited. I hope you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not really, Gareth.<\/p>\n<p>The director did go on to explain that, at least, he doesn\u2019t want to use it in the film itself. Just in its development. \u201cIt has no taste whatsoever,\u201d Edwards continued. \u201cIt is a fucking genius at helping you. I view it like having a second-unit director who is a billionaire on acid. Like, it\u2019ll do anything you ask, not a problem. Sometimes it\u2019ll [go] batshit crazy. And you\u2019ll give it notes, and it\u2019ll be like, \u2018I don\u2019t do notes. I\u2019ll just do something totally different.\u2019 But it\u2019s worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is it though? Is it really worth it? Where is it getting those ideas from, we wonder? Is it stealing them from original movies like, we don\u2019t know, <em>The Creator<\/em> or <em>Monsters<\/em>? It\u2019s not just grabbing ideas out of nowhere, right?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s only good for iteration and discovering what the movie should be, and then once you know what it is, go in and start making it your movie,\u201d Edwards added. Oh, okay. We\u2019re sure that\u2019s where it would stop.<\/p>\n<p>At least Edwards is right in that he admits that neither he nor anyone else really knows what the future of AI holds. \u201cWe don\u2019t know where it\u2019s going to go,\u201d he said. \u201cI think anybody saying they know exactly what\u2019s going to happen over the next five years is just a liar.\u201d But most people who make movies would say that stealing ideas from others to help you come up with new ideas isn\u2019t the best. Even if it\u2019s happening through a computer program.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll see how this plays out for Edwards in the future. Especially if he is, as rumored, tapped to direct a sequel to <em>Jurassic World Rebirth.<\/em> Are Universal and Steven Spielberg really going to be okay with AI coming up with ideas for that?<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe we\u2019re just being short-sighted.
