As digital fabrication and 3D scanning cross paths with memory and material, Medhat\u2019s practice asks \u201chow we carry our stories, and what happens when those stories are translated into new, synthetic languages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artist\u2019s new solo exhibition, titled <em>From the Loom<\/em>, fills Toronto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbozzogallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abbozzo Gallery<\/a> with large-scale sculptures in conversation with a new series of textile works. Known in part for his neon installations, the artist also presents several glowing light-based works encased within glass or acrylic, redolent of patterned Kurdish rugs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/medhat-5.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-474504\" title=\"\u201cDef\u201d (2026). Photo by Fraser Carr Moore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several of Medhat\u2019s images and symbols\u2014most prominently young boys riding horses and interacting with nature\u2014are sourced from Kurdish children\u2019s books. These icons are woven directly into the surface of each textile by way of an electronic Jacquard machine, further accentuating the contrast between preserved cultural objects and contemporary reconstruction. In the exhibition\u2019s statement, Medhat shares that his work \u201cfunctions as a distillation of a wider body of research,\u201d including the contemporary subversion of archival materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sheep and the Chevrolet,\u201d an anchoring work within the exhibition, reimagines Fran\u00e7ois Balsan\u2019s problematic 1947 ethnographic work of the same title. Pitting bucolic Kurdish life with Western modernism, Balsan\u2019s off-key travelogue presented a stereotypical, highly subjective view of Kurdish culture. Medhat\u2019s bold sculpture invokes 3D printing to construct a monumental sheep composedly sitting atop a small Chevrolet vehicle, offering a playful point of reconceptualization.<\/p>\n<p><em>From the Loom<\/em> is on view through May 26.
