I keep progressing and getting better, but so does everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kuss teared up in his winner\u2019s interview as he recalled seeing his family, who traveled over from America to watch the Giro d\u2019Italia.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now a full-time resident in Andorra and barely makes it back home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was lots of suffering in the final kilometer,\u201d Kuss said. \u201cI knew I had to push it all the way to the line and I went pretty deep in the middle. (Photo: Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day\u2019s main break of 26 went away on the first climb of the day and lost riders with every following summit.<\/p>\n<p>The group whittled down to only a very pick \u2018n\u2019 mix collection of eight on the penultimate climb of the Falzarego.<\/p>\n<p>Eternal attackers Ciccone and Einer Rubio (Movistar) were at the front of the break all day, until the Italian blasted solo down the final descent.<\/p>\n<p>Gee-West and Michael Storer (Tudor) both made the day\u2019s move and shadowed each other all stage after starting the day just 5 seconds apart on GC.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-I4-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) and Jan Hirt (NSN) \u2013 who started the day 9th and 16th overall \u2013 were also there in the hopes of vaulting up classification. Kuss and Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) slid into the attack in the hunt for the stage or as a tactical play for Vingegaard and Hindley respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Visma-Lease a Bike buzzed as a killer hive at the front of the GC group all day. Vingegaard started the stage with a 4-minute lead on GC, but the Dane was taking no chances on a stage so hard.<\/p>\n<h2>Kuss and Vingegaard in control<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_987380\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-987380\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2278039850.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Vingegaard moved one day closer to GC victory at the Giro d\u2019Italia on Friday.<\/span> (Photo: Luca Bettini \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ciccone took a sizable lead into the final climb after he attacked in the long descent, and his long-awaited stage win looked guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Only Kuss had other plans.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old launched at around 4km to go, caught Ciccone with 2km remaining, and didn\u2019t take his foot off the gas until he crossed the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Gall tried to pressure Vingegaard on the final summit, but the pink jersey had it all covered.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard and Gall crossed the line together.
