That\u2019s why it makes it even more beautiful,\u201d Magnier said. \u201cI can thank my team for the confidence they gave me. I got dropped on the first climb but my teammates cheered on me. They set me up for a sprint and it makes me so happy today. Jasper Stuyven gave me a fantastic leadout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lidl-Trek did much of the work to control a four-rider breakaway to try to save its Giro, and Milan survived a challenging closing 10km that included a short but very steep climb.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Soudal Quick-Step won the battle for the final kilometer, and Stuyven rolled out the red carpet for Magnier, who moved back into the points jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was well-protected by his teammates to carry pink into this weekend\u2019s pair of decisive climbing stages.<\/p>\n<h2>How it happened: Lidl-Trek comes up short<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_987230\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jonas Vingegaard Giro 2026\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"534\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-987230\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/vingegaard-giro-2026-720x534.jpeg?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Vingegaard made it through Thursday\u2019s transition stage comfortably in pink. <\/span> (Photo: Harry Talbot\/Gruber Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The transition stage was bound to be a tug-of-war between a breakaway and the sprinter teams.<\/p>\n<p>After missing out Sunday in Milano, the peloton\u2019s fast men wanted one more chance.<\/p>\n<p>But it wouldn\u2019t come easy. The 171km stage from Fai della Paganella to Pieve di Soligo featured a circuit course up and over the Muro di Ca\u2019 del Poggio (1.1km \u00e0 11.3%), a short but steep beast that came for the final time with under 10km to go.<\/p>\n<p>A four-rider break tried early in the stage but was reeled in coming into the final lap. Former Giro leader Eul\u00e1lio \u2014 who crashed earlier in stage \u2014 surged clear on the final passage, but Sepp Kuss led Vingegaard to bring it all together over the top.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The peloton split over the top for the fast run into the finish, with Eul\u00e1lio attacking again to fracture the group even more. Lidl-Trek and Soudal Quick-Step led the chase to set up the reduced bunch sprint.<\/p>\n<p>Eul\u00e1lio was also issued a yellow card by the race jury for, \u201cusing a non-compliant position or point of support on the bicycle that represents a danger to the rider or competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chasing surviving sprinters caught them with about 600m to go and Magnier won for the first time of this Giro.<\/p>\n<p>Magnier could match the all-time French record if he wins Sunday in Rome. Vingegaard looks untouchable at the top, but there\u2019s still a wide-open battle for the final podium spots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCa\u2019 del Poggio is a steep climb and there were a lot of spectators so I could feel something special. It was really nice, also with the attack of Afonso Eul\u00e1lio,\u201d Vingegaard said. \u201cDavide Piganzoli is close to him on GC, it would be great for him to win the <em>maglia bianca<\/em>. I\u2019d love to see him in that jersey. I also like winning myself, I\u2019ve always liked to compete with other persons and that\u2019s why I\u2019m enjoying this Giro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s 151km 19th stage from Feltre Alleghe (Piani di Pezz\u00e8) is an endless march across the heart of the Dolomites with nearly 5000m of climbing.
