We thrilled to Mayor Tom\u2019s wild mushroom trip and Patricia\u2019s diabolical cocktail party. But Wyck, played by veteran character actor Stephen Root, has been a tougher nut to crack. He\u2019s well aware that the island is cursed and is greatly frustrated when Tom insists on living in denial; they\u2019ve even come to blows over it. But gradually, a picture of Wyck\u2019s inner life has begun to emerge, and it\u2019s become clear the old sailor <em>does<\/em> have a heart (and a sense of humor) lurking beneath that salty exterior.<\/p>\n<p>In a new interview with Esquire, Root\u2014forever known as \u201cthe stapler guy\u201d to <em>Office Space<\/em> fanatics\u2014talked about getting into character. Becoming Wyck was a process he approached from the ground up, literally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, shoes are really important for a character. That\u2019s how he walks. Wyck walks in boots, but if they were sandals, that\u2019s something else. And we knew this guy\u2014old fisherman with the hat and the vest,\u201d Root said. \u201cI had a beard, but not heavy, and they said, \u2018Please don\u2019t shave for the next two months.\u2019 We let it grow from there. So that\u2019s also helpful. But sometimes you have to go outside-in to a character, and this was that. Clothes help the man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyck gets a wonderfully poignant spotlight in episode seven, \u201cSeasickness,\u201d where he tells Tom the story of losing his best friend when they were teenagers. A tentacled sea monster was the cause\u2014this is Widow\u2019s Bay, after all\u2014but Wyck still carries guilt over the loss. Root called it \u201ca great monologue\u201d and noted \u201cI very much had my <em>Jaws<\/em> moment in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There\u2019s been no word yet from Apple TV if <em>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> might get a second season, but its fans are very hopeful for its chances. And it sounds like Root would be happy to play Wyck again, even without knowing what might happen next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIf we have another season, we\u2019ve gotten no clues from [<em>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> creator Katie Dippold] as to where the through line is going to be, and that\u2019s fine for now,\u201d Root said. \u201cI\u2019m interested in seeing more about the island because the island itself is a character.
