Your phone reminds you where you were three summers ago, apps surface the first song you played in 2020, your camera roll stitches together the most mundane of evenings. Every platform now functions as its own archive, constantly feeding your past back to you in real time to leave us hungover on nostalgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/antennebooks.com\/products\/fast?srsltid=AfmBOoocUwkc-MrHWB3hdruaMXoN4jaEUf0OB92Gs49gMUnhdsVD8C8A\"><em>Fast!<\/em><\/a>, the latest photobook from youth culture photographers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chusandgreg\/\">Chus&amp;Greg<\/a>, captures the familiar ache of time passing. Spanning London, Paris, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Madrid and Tokyo, the project documents the stage of life that arrives just after adolescence, what the pair describe as \u201cthat moment right after teenagehood \u2013 when things are shifting, but nothing is fully defined yet\u201d, they explain, describing a moment defined by the desire to hold onto it while still living it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"09ef1d57-3be8-4829-89ba-b454013c3e3a\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445767.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.51\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fast!\" class=\"img\" height=\"1989\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445767.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Chus <span class=\"nowrap\">&amp; Greg<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The project is framed with a poetic passage written by the photographers themselves: \u201cWhen I was young, there were two things I wanted to do. One was to find a place with no before or after, a place where nothing ever happens, just like heaven. The second thing was to discover a tasty and lasting flavour, high, sweet and shocking red, like a cherry on top, and to celebrate it with the ultimate toast,\u201d they write. \u201cNow I\u2019ve grown up, and a third concern frightens me: to leave the freckles behind and search in your eyes for the idea of you. Oh, I am such a bore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Across the book, that sense of longing takes shape through a series of intimate portraits of young people from a mix of creative industries. \u201cSome make music, some design clothes, others are artists, students or already working,\u201d the pair explain. \u201cWhat connects all of them is that they\u2019ve already started building something for themselves in some way.\u201d In <\/span><em><span>Fast!<\/span><\/em><span>, they appear across different cities, living parallel lives within the same gap of time. Some spark cigarettes, smoke pooling around their faces, others run through empty streets or hunch over tables with friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"9b508ef8-13f9-47bb-927c-b454013c280a\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445761.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.62\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fast!\" class=\"img\" height=\"1852\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445761.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Chus <span class=\"nowrap\">&amp; Greg<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Youth culture has long sat at the centre of Chus&amp;Greg\u2019s work; their previous project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/art-photography\/article\/69268\/1\/this-zine-shines-a-light-on-the-shadows-of-brightons-teenagers\"><em>Brighteens<\/em><\/a> focused on the moodier subcultures found within the seaside haven. <em>Fast! <\/em>shifts away from teenagehood itself towards the instability that follows it. \u201c<\/span><span>To us, youth is not just an age category, it\u2019s a transition between dependence and responsibility, imagination and reality, vulnerability and strength,\u201d they explain. \u201cThis dichotomy and tension is what make this period of time beautiful, powerful, but also difficult and often misunderstood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That sense of instability carries into the visual language of <\/span><em><span>Fast!<\/span><\/em><span>, where the pair mix digital photography with handycam footage to create images that feel suspended mid-motion. \u201cIt feels immediate, almost like a memory or a screenshot of time passing,\u201d they say. <\/span><span>The sequencing, assembled alongside creative director Patrick R\u00e9my, mirrors that looseness. The project collages shots of a polystyrene cup of filter coffee beside a hazy image of friends on a sofa, followed by a close-up portrait, arranged with the same fragmented logic of a camera roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"7445fa23-810f-45d5-84a4-b454013c76f0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445780.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.64\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fast!\" class=\"img\" height=\"1825\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445780.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Chus <span class=\"nowrap\">&amp; Greg<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>One of the project\u2019s strongest visual references comes from cine quinqui, the Spanish film movement of the late 70s and early 80s that centred on working-class youth, street life and delinquency during Spain\u2019s transition out of Franco\u2019s dictatorship. \u201cThese films became important because they captured a raw, chaotic side of Spanish society that had long been hidden or censored,\u201d the photographers explain. While <em>Fast! <\/em>exists within a different social context, traces of that influence remain in its visuals. \u201c<\/span><span>We were interested in borrowing some of that visual language. That rawness, the sense of chaos, and the mix between staged moments and realism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book closes with lyrics from <em>1979 <\/em>by The Smashing Pumpkins, a track Chus&amp;Greg describe as \u201cthe soundtrack of our youth\u201d. Every platform now functions as its own archive, constantly feeding your past back to you in real time to leave us hungover on nostalgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/antennebooks.com\/products\/fast?srsltid=AfmBOoocUwkc-MrHWB3hdruaMXoN4jaEUf0OB92Gs49gMUnhdsVD8C8A\"><em>Fast!<\/em><\/a>, the latest photobook from youth culture photographers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chusandgreg\/\">Chus&amp;Greg<\/a>, captures the familiar ache of time passing. One was to find a place with no before or after, a place where nothing ever happens, just like heaven. The second thing was to discover a tasty and lasting flavour, high, sweet and shocking red, like a cherry on top, and to celebrate it with the ultimate toast,\u201d they write. \u201cNow I\u2019ve grown up, and a third concern frightens me: to leave the freckles behind and search in your eyes for the idea of you. Oh, I am such a bore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Across the book, that sense of longing takes shape through a series of intimate portraits of young people from a mix of creative industries. \u201cSome make music, some design clothes, others are artists, students or already working,\u201d the pair explain. \u201cWhat connects all of them is that they\u2019ve already started building something for themselves in some way.\u201d In <\/span><em><span>Fast!<\/span><\/em><span>, they appear across different cities, living parallel lives within the same gap of time. The project collages shots of a polystyrene cup of filter coffee beside a hazy image of friends on a sofa, followed by a close-up portrait, arranged with the same fragmented logic of a camera roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"7445fa23-810f-45d5-84a4-b454013c76f0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445780.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.64\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fast!\" class=\"img\" height=\"1825\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/5\/1445780.jpg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Chus <span class=\"nowrap\">&amp; Greg<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>One of the project\u2019s strongest visual references comes from cine quinqui, the Spanish film movement of the late 70s and early 80s that centred on working-class youth, street life and delinquency during Spain\u2019s transition out of Franco\u2019s dictatorship. \u201cThese films became important because they captured a raw, chaotic side of Spanish society that had long been hidden or censored,\u201d the photographers explain. While <em>Fast! <\/em>exists within a different social context, traces of that influence remain in its visuals. \u201c<\/span><span>We were interested in borrowing some of that visual language. That rawness, the sense of chaos, and the mix between staged moments and realism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book closes with lyrics from <em>1979 <\/em>by The Smashing Pumpkins, a track Chus&amp;Greg describe as \u201cthe soundtrack of our youth\u201d.
