Over the weekend, Paul McCartney sat down to talk about his upcoming solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane<\/em>, with actor Paul Mescal, who is slated to portray the former Beatle in director Sam Mendes\u2019 The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event<\/em>, due out in April 2028.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two men sat down for The Boys of Dungeon Lane: In Conversation with Paul McCartney & Paul Mescal<\/em>, which debuted on Monday (May 25) on Amazon Live and the Amazon Music app. The 11-minute chat in a restaurant opens with a seemingly nervous Mescal asking, \u201cHow do you feel about being interviewed?,\u201d with veteran interviewee McCartney smiling back, \u201cIt depends if I like the person. Which is where we\u2019re running into a problem already \u2026 No, I find if I like who I\u2019m being interviewed by it comes easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe intimate conversation finds Mescal diving right into the personal nature of the songwriting on McCartney\u2019s album (due out on May 29), asking how the legendary pop songwriter is able to spin his memories into new music while also making them feel like they\u2019re in the \u201cpresent tense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how I do it,\u201d says McCartney during the interview, which is broken up with glimpses of archival pictures of the Beatles and young people laughing at the tables around them. \u201cI haven\u2019t got a formula. They used to ask me and John [Lennon], \u2018How\u2019d you do it? Who writes the music, who writes the words?\u2019 I don\u2019t know. To me, I think any story or song you\u2019re gonna do, it\u2019s gotta involve memory. With the Beatles, we always tried to write something different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMcCartney says he likes writing about Lennon and late Beatles guitarist\/songwriter George Harrison these days, because it\u2019s like \u201crevisiting them.\u201d He does just that on the new song \u201cDown South,\u201d which harkens back to his and Lennon\u2019s pre-fame days as children.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also discuss the new album\u2019s collaboration with former bandmate Ringo Starr on the single \u201cHome To Us,\u201d as well as \u201cDays We Left Behind,\u201d a romantic tune looking back at what Mescal dubs McCartney\u2019s \u201cfull, brilliant, complicated\u201d relationship with his songwriting partner. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLooking back on your life, I ran into this guy called John Lennon, and he was fighting life \u2014 he had a lot trouble, his dad had left home, his mom had got run over, he had a lot of trouble in there \u2014 so he was putting up a shield, so he was very witty, very biting,\u201d McCartney says of Lennon. \u201cWhen it came to writing, that kind of relationship stayed there, so on this record, I might even refer to him in my mind, as if we\u2019re still writing together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also discuss an emotional track written in honor of McCartney\u2019s parents, \u201cSalesman Saint.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI often remember that my mom and dad had me in World War II. I\u2019ve always known that growing up, but at certain point you go \u2018Wow.\u2019 McCartney says of the track on which he paints a picture of his cotton salesman father and nurse\/midwife mother, who in the song becomes a saint. \u201cIt occurred to me that it\u2019d be good to just put down some stuff about them carrying on through whatever they had to put up with,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
