Richmond, California-based Paragon Machine Works (PMW) was a crucial supplier of these parts and more for frame builders across the country, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/paragonmachine\/\">their closure<\/a> in late March left many small bike brands reeling. The Portland company also plans to make some of the remaining PMW inventory available to builders.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-c6c5e81cd333ad677ce84e5b9273e954 singl-content\" id=\"singl-c6c5e81cd333ad677ce84e5b9273e954\"><\/div>\n<p>Founded in the 1980s, PMW was owned and operated by the Norstad family. The press release from Firsthand Framebuilding suggests PMW faced a combination of declining sales and rising costs, which resulted in their abrupt closure announcement on March 27, 2026. More than a month later, on May 7, PMW posted on Instagram, \u201cWe have temporarily shut down our webstore for inventory and website management. We will let you know when our store is back online and apologize for any inconvenience.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paragonmachineworks.com\/shop\">online store<\/a> remains closed as of press time.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, bicycle framebuilding suppliers have struggled. <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">In May of 2020, Henry James, located in Portland, Oregon,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=3820287701378450&amp;set=a.186002363327765\" target=\"_blank\">announced their closure<\/a>.<\/span> Then in 2022, California-based Nova Cycles quietly ceased operations.<\/p>\n<p>Paragon supplied many respected bike brands, including <a href=\"https:\/\/chumbausa.com\/framebuilding\">Chumba<\/a>. Over the past few years, some builders have come to rely on CNC-machined parts from overseas suppliers, or, in a few cases, parts crafted in-house.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-6ad9e1848eaf526ce8005bd6c7f85a18 singl-content\" id=\"singl-6ad9e1848eaf526ce8005bd6c7f85a18\"><\/div>\n<p>Surviving US-based framebuilding suppliers include Firsthand Framebuilding, Bicycle Fabrication Supply in Arizona, and Framebuilder Supply in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely optimistic that, with the right approach, manufacturing high-quality, affordable framebuilding bits domestically is still very doable\u2013and important\u2013in 2026,\u201d Blandford said in a release. \u201cParagon\u2019s closure was a gut-check for all of us.
