trial in Iran once more, on charges of \u201cpropaganda against the regime.\u201d He was sentenced by Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Court to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban in absentia last year.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--culture js-article-content\">\n<p>Oscar-nominated and Cannes-winning Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been summoned for a court hearing in Iran tomorrow as part of a retrial related to charges against him of \u201cpropaganda activity against the regime.\u201d <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" sentenced by Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Court to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban <strong>in absentia at the end of 2025<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker returned to Iran at the end of March after the ceremony for the <strong>98th Academy Awards<\/strong> in which <em>It Was Just An Accident<\/em> was nominated for Best International Feature Film. <\/p>\n<p>The retrial has been called following an appeal by Panahi\u2019s lawyers. <\/p>\n<p>Branch 26 of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court, which is overseeing the case, also banned the director from membership of political <em>It Was Just An Accident<\/em> and was only released after going on a hunger strike. He spent 86 days in Iran\u2019s notorious Evin prison in 2022 and 2023 on charges of anti-government activity dating back to 2010 and for demonstrating against the imprisonment of his friend and <strong>fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>In prison, Panahi met activist and political prisoner Mehdi Mahmoudian. class=\"articleBody\" data-key=\"articleBody\">Oscar-nominated and Cannes-winning Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been summoned for a court hearing in Iran\u00a0tomorrow as part of a retrial related to charges against him of \u201cpropaganda activity against the regime.\u201d \u00a0Panahi, who won last year\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or in Cannes for It Was Just An Accident, was sentenced by Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Court\u00a0to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban in absentia at the end of 2025. \u00a0The filmmaker returned to Iran at the end of March after the ceremony for the 98th Academy Awards in which\u00a0It Was Just An Accident\u00a0was nominated for\u00a0Best International Feature Film.\u00a0The retrial has been called following an appeal by Panahi\u2019s lawyers.\u00a0Branch 26 of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court, which is overseeing the case, also banned the director from membership of political and social groups.Panahi was jailed shortly before making\u00a0It Was Just An Accident and was only released after going on a hunger strike. He spent 86 days in Iran\u2019s notorious Evin prison in 2022 and 2023 on charges of anti-government activity dating back to 2010 and for demonstrating against the imprisonment of his friend and\u00a0fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.\u00a0\u00a0In prison, Panahi met activist and political prisoner Mehdi Mahmoudian. The two collaborated on the screenplay for\u00a0It Was Just An Accident, a thriller inspired by Panahi\u2019s time in prison.\u00a0Mahmoudian was re-arrested earlier this year on accusations of \u201cinsulting the Supreme Leader\u201d and \u201cpropaganda against the Islamic Republic.\u201d\u00a0Panahi\u00a0has\u00a0clashed with the repressive Iranian authorities\u00a0as far back as 2003, has been\u00a0imprisoned twice in Iran, and was banned from filmmaking for his anti-regime stance and \u201cpropaganda against the state\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0He has continued to make films in defiance of the authorities and is best known for films like\u00a0This Is Not a Film,\u00a0No Bears\u00a0and\u00a0Taxi Tehran, which won the Golden Bear at the\u00a0Berlin Film Festival\u00a0in 2015.\u00a0Whilst promoting\u00a0It Was Just an Accident in the US, Panahi won\u00a0three Gotham awards: Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best International Feature.\u00a0\u201cI would like to dedicate the honour of this award to independent filmmakers in Iran and around the world, filmmakers who keep the camera rolling in silence, without support, and at times by risking everything they have, only with their faith in truth and humanity,\u201d said Panahi at the ceremony.\u00a0\u201cI hope that this dedication will be considered a small tribute to all filmmakers who have been deprived of the right to see and to be seen, but continue to create and exist.\u201d\u00a0It Was Just An Accident follows a group of formerly imprisoned Iranians who contemplate whether to exact revenge on a man they believe to be their former jailer and torturer. It serves as an unflinching condemnation of the Islamist Republic\u2019s repression and is a timeless commentary of the sins of state despotism.\u00a0In\u00a0our review\u00a0of\u00a0It Was Just An Accident, we wrote: \u201cShot in secret, considering Panahi was not allowed filming permission from the authorities, the result is a taut, tense and tightly scripted drama that surprises due to its deft tonal shifts.
