Antibiotic resistance is \u2018a major threat\u2019 to our health and economy, according to Japanese pharma experts.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--business js-article-content\">\n<p>\u201cWe need new antibiotics,\u201d Estelle Fruchet, Shionogi Europe\u2019s general manager for France said. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And while this might not sound like a particularly novel revelation, the stats behind her plea should have us all worried. <\/p>\n<p>In this episode of The Big Question, Estelle joined Angela Barnes in the studio to discuss why antimicrobial resistance could become the next economic crisis. <\/p>\n<h2>Death, sick days and lackluster productivity<\/h2>\n<p>Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the technical term for when bacteria mutate and become <strong>resistant to being killed by antibiotics<\/strong>. It is why we are all told we should not be too liberal with our use of these drugs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started 25 years ago, there were a lot of prescriptions of antibiotics for a simple cough. And the more you use them, the more the bacteria can become resistant,\u201d Estelle explained. <\/p>\n<p>With fewer treatment options against resistant bacteria, the unnecessary death toll is racking up.<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Centre for Disease prevention and Control (ECDC), AMR infections cause more than 35,000 deaths every year in the EU. <\/p>\n<p>Globally, it is about 1.3 million people per year. And it is predicted that this will cost the world $412bn (\u20ac352bn) a year in additional healthcare costs and $443bn (\u20ac379bn) per year in lost workforce productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Some predictions are even bleaker, projecting $1 trillion of additional healthcare costs and a 3.8% loss of global annual GDP. <\/p>\n<p>And where costs rise, a lower quality of life could follow. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">\u2018We are disruptors of the industry\u2019: Can sustainable aviation fuel protect airlines from fuel shock?<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Meet the co-founder of Airbnb: How a weekend scheme to pay the rent turned into an industry giant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Can we solve AMR?<\/h2>\n<p>Much of the pharmaceutical industry has long since <strong>given up developing new antibiotics<\/strong>. Shionogi is one of the few that are persevering. <\/p>\n<p>It costs around \u20ac1 billion and 10-15 years to develop any new drug and 95% of them are failures. But the unique problem with antibiotics is that market prices for them are quite low and their usage has to be limited, so the ROI to develop an antibiotic just isn\u2019t good business. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what we call a broken market,\u201d Estelle told The Big Question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a new economic model. It is why we are all told we should not be too liberal with our use of these drugs.\u00a0\u201cWhen I started 25 years ago, there were a lot of prescriptions of antibiotics for a simple cough. And the more you use them, the more the bacteria can become resistant,\u201d Estelle explained.\u00a0With fewer treatment options against resistant bacteria, the unnecessary death toll is racking up.According to the European Centre for Disease prevention and Control (ECDC), AMR infections cause more than 35,000 deaths every year in the EU.\u00a0Globally, it is about 1.3 million people per year. That is roughly the population of Prague, Dublin or Helsinki.\u00a0What does AMR mean for the economy?Rising cases of illness and longer hospital stays mean both increased medical costs for already strained healthcare systems and loss of earnings for the patients, as well as reduced productivity for their employers.\u00a0This is costing Europe around \u20ac12 billion per year and that figure is only set to rise.\u00a0If left unchecked, a 2024 Lancet publication suggested that between now and 2050 a total of 39 million people could die from AMR-induced infections globally. And it is predicted that this will cost the world $412bn (\u20ac352bn) a year in additional healthcare costs and $443bn (\u20ac379bn) per year in lost workforce productivity.Some predictions are even bleaker, projecting $1 trillion of additional healthcare costs and a 3.8% loss of global annual GDP.\u00a0And where costs rise, a lower quality of life could follow.\u00a0Can we solve AMR?Much of the pharmaceutical industry has long since given up developing new antibiotics. Shionogi is one of the few that are persevering.\u00a0It costs around \u20ac1 billion and 10-15 years to develop any new drug and 95% of them are failures. But the unique problem with antibiotics is that market prices for them are quite low and their usage has to be limited, so the ROI to develop an antibiotic just isn\u2019t good business.\u00a0\u201cThis is what we call a broken market,\u201d Estelle told The Big Question.\u201cWe need a new economic model.
