{"id":1938553,"date":"2026-05-16T04:03:56","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1938553"},"modified":"2026-05-16T04:03:56","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:03:56","slug":"why-ausar-thompson-wasnt-ejected-from-game-6-for-slamming-sam-merrill-to-floor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1938553","title":{"rendered":"Why Ausar Thompson wasn\u2019t ejected from Game 6 for slamming Sam Merrill to floor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"Article_ContentContainer__jBNW3 article-content-container bodytext1\">\n<p>CLEVELAND \u2014 The Detroit Pistons have found something on defense over the last two games of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they nearly lost one of two key ingredients in the second quarter Friday.<\/p>\n<p>With 8:04 left before halftime of the Pistons\u2019 115-94 win over Cleveland in Game 6, Detroit\u2019s Ausar Thompson, who has been freed up to hound Donovan Mitchell defensively by the emergence of teammate Daniss Jenkins, was trying to fight through a screen set by Cleveland\u2019s Sam Merrill. He initially appeared to have gone through Merrill, like a linebacker blowing up a blocking back, and then stepped over Merrill for effect.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the officials immediately signaled for a video review to see if the foul on Thompson should be upgraded. The replays on the video board clearly showed Thompson\u2019s left hand around Merrill\u2019s neck as he threw him to the ground.<\/p>\n<p id=\"article-pickem\">\n<p>Lead referee Zach Zarba said Thompson\u2019s left arm extended to Merrill\u2019s head and neck area and \u201cthere was follow-through,\u201d and he assessed Thompson a flagrant foul, penalty 1, which meant Thompson could stay in the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt like it was a moving screen (on Merrill),\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI was just hoping that whatever (the referees) decided, I was going to be able to keep playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>After the game, Zarba told a pool reporter the referees did see Thompson\u2019s hand on Merrill\u2019s neck but didn\u2019t throw him out because the play was missing one of three criteria needed for an ejection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"top-league-content-root\"><\/div>\n<p>    {&#8220;endpoint&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com\/graphql&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe criteria for a flagrant foul 2 would be windup, impact and follow-through,\u201d Zarba said. \u201cOn this particular play, there was impact and follow-through, but there was no windup. It was unnecessary contact but also not excessive, so that\u2019s why it wasn\u2019t upgraded to a flagrant 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merrill, who turned 30 on Friday, said he didn\u2019t realize Thompson\u2019s hand had wrapped around his neck until he saw the replay. \u201cI thought he just pushed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the moment, Cavs fans were outraged, with thousands chanting \u201cThrow him out.\u201d When that didn\u2019t happen, the crowd booed Thompson lustily every time he checked into the game or touched the ball.<\/p>\n<p>But afterward, the Cavs weren\u2019t retroactively clamoring for an ejection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the replay showed he full-on grabbed my neck, but I didn\u2019t feel like it was excessive,\u201d Merrill said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting an ejection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cavs forward Evan Mobley: \u201cYou never know in this league, if it\u2019s gonna be a flagrant or an ejection. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thompson finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals and fouled out with 3:56 left in the game and the Pistons ahead by 15. For the first four games of this series, Detroit started Duncan Robinson on the wing opposite Thompson, which meant it had to choose how to deploy Thompson more carefully (guard Mitchell, check James Harden, disguise coverages?).<\/p>\n<div data-ath-video-stream=\"62Rx1LuOzYdCNBT\"><\/div>\n<p>Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff inserted Jenkins in place of Robinson for Game 5 (because Robinson was out with a bad back) and stuck with him for Game 6 with Robinson coming off the bench. In the last two games, Mitchell has shot 10 of 35 in regulation (not counting overtime in Game 5, when he scored 7 of his 21 points).<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid2\" data-position=\"mid2\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Pistons were ahead by 12 when Thompson and Merrill collided, but the Cavs cut that lead to 3. Thompson\u2019s remaining in the game was certainly not the only reason Detroit won in a blowout, but it was a factor.<\/p>\n<p>Mobley finished with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting in Game 6. As he\u00a0spoke Friday night, a long scratch suffered during Game 5 that ran from above his left eye all the way down the side of his face was visible. It looked fresh, even though it was 2 days old.<\/p>\n<p>He said he thought former Cleveland teammate and Pistons reserve guard Caris LeVert scratched him.
