Eul\u00e1lio (Bahrain Victorious) for the stage win after one of the most wild and wacky finales the Giro d\u2019Italia has seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aspect-video\">\n<p>Arrieta caught back to Eul\u00e1lio within sight of the finishline of stage 5 on Wednesday after the two escapees traded misfortunes through a carnivalesque final 15km.<\/p>\n<p>The two both separately crashed on slick technical roads, and then it looked like Arrieta made a fatal error in overcooking a bend 2km from the line.<\/p>\n<p>Eul\u00e1lio, gassed from the hardest stage of the race so far and bruised from his fall, slogged his way toward the line and looked in sight of a marquee stage win.<\/p>\n<p>But Arrieta wasn\u2019t done.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old Spaniard steamed back into Eul\u00e1lio\u2019s draft and didn\u2019t stop, blasting to a career-topping stage win and the second in two days for UAE Emirates XRG.<\/p>\n<p>It was a victory of bloody-minded resilience for Arrieta.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span the last kilometers but I knew Eul\u00e1lio was also the same,\u201d Arrieta said at the line. \u201cBoth of us deserved the victory, but in the end I had it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I lost Eul\u00e1lio in the last two kilometers I thought it\u2019s not possible,\u201d Arrieta said. \u201cBut I kept pushing, I saw that he could not go faster than me, and then when I took his wheel I thought, \u2018maybe I can win one stage.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Eul\u00e1lio into pink as GC hitters play safe<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_985742\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img but he didn\u2019t leave empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>He took a sizeable GC lead after the main classification rivals paused hostilities on a grueling, rain-swept stage into Potenza.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a huge save for Bahrain Victorious after its leader Santiago Buitrago abandoned after the huge crash on stage 2.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Vingegaard, Giulio Pellizzari, and all their key rivals came to the line 7 minutes back, leaving breakaway riders to flood into the top of GC.<\/p>\n<p>Those classification usurpers won\u2019t be there long \u2014 a huge mountaintop finish to Blockhaus arrives on 5 across southern Italy was a brute. The route profile didn\u2019t do justice to a 200km stage that stacked nearly 4,000m of ascent into relentlessly rolling roads.<\/p>\n<p>The 6.6km, 9.2 percent wall of Viggiano 50km from the line was touted one of the hardest of the first half of the Giro. There were questions whether the GC teams would let them go on a stage designed for a classification shake up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-I2-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The two finalists didn\u2019t wait to find out what Red Bull, Visma, and Lidl-Trek might do.<\/p>\n<p>They attacked clear on the Viggiano and worked together to fend off the remnants of the break.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like Eul\u00e1lio and Arrieta would stay together until deep in the final after the classification teams chose to play safe in the gruesome conditions.<\/p>\n<p>But the weather gods had other plans for Eul\u00e1lio and Arrieta.<\/p>\n<p>Arrieta crashed hard on a greasy bend 13km from the line and lost contact with Eulalio as he waited for a bike change from the UAE car.<\/p>\n<p>The stage looked over as Eul\u00e1lio ripped solo toward the finish. But it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He then also crashed 6km from the line, and Arrieta caught back.<\/p>\n<p>But there was a third twist to the tale. Arrieta overcooked a corner 2km from the line, and the moment of correction allowed Eul\u00e1lio to get away.<\/p>\n<p>But it <em>still<\/em> wasn\u2019t over.<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"it\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udd3bAn absurd finale!
