Let me be clear &#8212; this decision does not mean Murdaugh will be released. He will remain in prison for his financial crimes. Still, the appeals court said the integrity of the jury had been tainted &#8212; meaning the guilty verdicts had to go.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-29ae74d0142c4776870625e9f133c9c6\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink canvas-text-block--default  \" data-context='{\"section\":\"permalink\",\"name\":\"text_block\"}'>\n<p>Murdaugh is not being released from prison, though. Even with the murder convictions overturned, he\u2019s still serving lengthy sentences tied to the massive financial fraud schemes he admitted to carrying out for years.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-33c6ea49edc1e85ca78c043ccbd06724\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink canvas-text-block--default  \" data-context='{\"section\":\"permalink\",\"name\":\"text_block\"}'>\n<p>But now, one of the country\u2019s most infamous murder cases is headed back to court &#8230; and the Murdaugh murder saga is far from finished.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-0a8ec8e755e71826adfc4b7a2e5d16fe\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink canvas-text-block--default  \" data-context='{\"section\":\"permalink\",\"name\":\"text_block\"}'>\n<p>In a statement obtained by TMZ, <strong>Alex Murdaugh<\/strong>&#8216;s defense team, <strong>Dick Harpootlian<\/strong> and <strong>Jim Griffin<\/strong>, respond to the court&#8217;s decision saying &#8230;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-43d4b3308a29728fa4f1af78da23d697\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink canvas-text-block--default  \" data-context='{\"section\":\"permalink\",\"name\":\"text_block\"}'>\n<p>&#8220;The Supreme Court&#8217;s decision today affirms that the rule of law remains strong in South Carolina. The Court found that Becky Hill&#8217;s conduct during the trial attacked Alex Murdaugh&#8217;s credibility and his defense. The Court rightly described her conduct as &#8216;breathtaking,&#8217; &#8216;disgraceful,&#8217; and &#8216;unprecedented in South Carolina.&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-664d337b378b093b6b34f3c131579095\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink canvas-text-block--default  canvas-block-is-last \" data-context='{\"section\":\"permalink\",\"name\":\"text_block\"}'>\n<p>&#8220;We respect the decision that made clear that the retrial must look very different from the first. The initial jury\u00a0 heard more than twelve hours of testimony about Alex&#8217;s financial crimes. The Court held that this evidence went far beyond what was necessary and gave rise to unfair prejudice. On retrial, that will not be permitted. Alex has said from day one that he did not kill his wife and son.
