Havana Rose Liu is up to something. She\u2019s got the glow of somebody caught up in the rush of a new project \u2014 which, at this moment, happens to be a lamp. Well, part of one. \u201cI made a container for the lamp. I would love to learn the wiring, but I don\u2019t have time for that,\u201d she tells me on Zoom, sitting in a sunny corner of her home in Brooklyn\u2019s Dumbo neighborhood. Luckily, she knows better than to go full electrician without some guidance. \u201cI would die. I would be electrocuted. No interview for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old actor is constantly working on DIY projects, even if she can never get around to finishing what she starts. \u201cI\u2019m just always fiddling with something,\u201d she says. Growing up, the native New Yorker had plans to hand-make just about everything in her home. \u201cI thought, \u2018I will make the chairs. I will make the couch. I will make every bowl and dish and cup.\u2019 But it turns out you need a lot of time, money, and resources, and skill to do all those things,\u201d she says. \u201cI hope when I\u2019m 85, that will come true, but it\u2019s just not in my books right now.\u201d At the moment, home-improvement ambitions are more annoying than inspired. \u201cI came home and was like, \u2018What the f*ck is going on in here?\u2019 There\u2019s too many little things that I\u2019ve made or half-made.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s just returned from an off-the-grid retreat for an upcoming project. (She can\u2019t really talk about it, except to say it was \u201cincredibly amazing,\u201d and that she\u2019ll tell me everything in a year.) \u201cUsually I come here and I lie on the floor as soon as I arrive and feel so happy to be in my house, but right now I feel a little bit wonky,\u201d she says \u2014 some friends were staying in her place while she was gone, and her belongings are not in their usual places. She\u2019s doing everything she can to get back in the groove: picking up her meditation and breathwork routines, trying to make a yoga habit stick, keeping her screen time low.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like to lose my phone and leave it in random places,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m so of our generation in a way that I really am aware of all of the bullsh*t of what\u2019s unhealthy. If I\u2019m not careful, I can go in a scroll hole for many hours. I lock into whatever I\u2019m doing. I just really cannot.\u201d She doesn\u2019t even watch TV for that reason. \u201cI find it so addictive. That\u2019s why I mostly act in films.\u201d<\/p>\n

Movies \u2014 whether it\u2019s the breakout sex comedy Bottoms<\/em> or the celebrity-fandom thriller Lurker<\/em> or last year\u2019s holiday romp Oh. What. Fun.<\/em> \u2014 are the perfect excuse to keep trying out niche hobbies. \u201cI want to learn things, and the skill set needs to come from actually being forced to really learn it,\u201d says Liu (who also starred in the off-Broadway college dramedy All Nighter<\/em><\/a> last year). She doesn\u2019t have to look far for inspiration: \u201cRight now, I\u2019d love to learn to be a furniture maker. That\u2019s my dream role at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m feeling most happy and safe and myself, I\u2019m usually doing some side adventures.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
