But just because <em>The Odyssey<\/em> is coming from the Oscar-winning director, features innovative filmmaking techniques, and is stuffed with major stars doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s been free of controversy. In a new interview, Nolan talked about some of the things that fans are getting bent out of shape about before they\u2019ve even seen the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Time, Nolan explained the depth of research that went into planning <em>The Odyssey<\/em>\u2018s production design. That includes the armor worn by Agamemnon (Benny Safdie). After it was glimpsed in the film\u2019s trailers, some viewers thought it too closely resembled the armor worn by another familiar Nolan character: Batman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze. The theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it and then use sulfur,\u201d Nolan said when asked about the \u201cthat armor looks like the Batsuit\u201d complaints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWith Agamemnon, Ellen [Mirojnick], our costume designer, is trying to communicate how elevated he is relative to everyone else. You do that through materials that would be very expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued. \u201cThe oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to be depicted in the manner of people living in Homer\u2019s time. So there\u2019s a pretty strong case there for portraying things that way because that\u2019s the way the first audience received the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he also understands there\u2019s no way of achieving absolute accuracy\u2014much in the same way he approached one of his earlier films, in the context of a completely different setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0\u201cFor\u00a0<i>Interstellar,<\/i> you\u2019re looking at, \u2018What is the best speculation of the future?\u2019 When you\u2019re looking at the ancient past, it\u2019s actually the same thing. \u2018What is the best speculation and how can I use that to create a world?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He hopes even ancient Greek scholars will have a good time with <em>The Odyssey<\/em>, \u201ceven if they don\u2019t agree with everything. We had a lot of scientists complain about<i>\u00a0Interstellar.<\/i>\u00a0But you just don\u2019t want people to think that you took it on frivolously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another <em>Odyssey<\/em> controversy that Nolan briefly discussed: the casting of Travis Scott, a rapper who\u2019s no stranger to controversy himself.
