With that in mind, we have the distinct feeling that the 90s Kinderwhore would\u2019ve done the exact same thing, but to the all-consuming glut of girlhood trends that have taken over our feeds in the last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s not to say that \u201cgirl\u201d trends don\u2019t have their place \u2013 lots of people find solace in the frivolity of its ruffles and folds, plus 2023 was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/61545\/1\/2023-was-the-year-of-the-girl-barbie-taylor-swift-era-tour-tiktok-trends\"><span>the year of the girl<\/span><\/a><span>, after all. It\u2019s just that, before all those pink bows found their way onto Mary-Janes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/61566\/1\/coquette-core-trend-bow-ribbon-tiktok\"><span>gherkins<\/span><\/a><span>, the Kinderwhore\u2019s approach to the aesthetics of girlhood was a little bit different. But who was she in the first place?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"rJVZfOZ8-o8\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rJVZfOZ8-o8\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>It\u2019s often considered a toss up between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/courtney-love\"><span>Courtney Love<\/span><\/a><span> and Kat Bjelland when we think about originators of the Kinderwhore aesthetic. Before the musicians found respective fame in Hole and Babes of Toyland, the pair founded the band Pagan Babies as roommates in 1985. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The story goes that they shared clothes while living together, a compendium of babydoll dresses, Peter Pan collars, satin slips, ripped fishnets and white knee-high socks. Topped off with crimson lipstick, smudged eyeliner, and peroxide hair clipped back by barrettes, the Kinderwhore look was complete and ready to be unleashed on the world. After incubating in scuzzy punk clubs and LA dive bars, the look went properly mainstream after Hole\u2019s music video for \u201cMiss World\u201d debuted, released 30 years ago on March 28, 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though Love and Bjelland both claim that the other had nothing to do with pioneering the look \u2013 a debate that\u2019s still going on to this day \u2013 it was actually <\/span><em><span>Melody Maker<\/span><\/em><span> journalist Everett True who coined the specific term in a 1993 interview with Love and then partner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kurt-cobain\"><span>Kurt Cobain<\/span><\/a><span>. A portmanteau of the German for \u201cchild\u201d and the self-explanatory descriptor \u201cwhore\u201d, the word clearly isn\u2019t without its controversial associations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mS1Ckczz0LQ\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mS1Ckczz0LQ\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In his 1996 book <\/span><em><span>Fashion as Communication<\/span><\/em><span>, fashion professor Malcolm Bernard described the look as \u201ca form of reversal,\u201d that mixes two already existing identities that have been devalued in society \u2013 the girl and the whore \u2013 and the resulting combination \u201cis proposed as a radical and challenging model of femininity.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unlike most modern \u2018girl\u2019 trends, the Kinderwhore\u2019s conflation of these two disparate identities actively attempted to subvert pre-conceived notions of femininity, rather than simply basking in them \u2013 but this doesn\u2019t come without its challenges. Elsewhere in the book, Bernard adds that \u201cthe possibility that reversing the status of existing identities and celebrating the result might prove to be a successful form of resistance to dominant ideas is not guaranteed.\u201d In other words, by parodying the look of an oversexualised young girl, you might end up reproducing its negative connotations rather than resisting those connotations in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"Cth9aakWf38\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cth9aakWf38\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Despite pushback like this, Love had her own ideas about the aesthetic. In a 1994 interview with <\/span><em><span>Rolling Stone<\/span><\/em><span>, though she did admit the look could potentially \u201c[get] mixed up with the idea of a woman having to be appealing to get across,\u201d there was more thought behind it than that. \u201cI didn\u2019t do the Kinderwhore thing because I thought I was so hot,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I see the look used to make one more appealing \u2013 when I see a 14-year-old girl in a fanzine acting like she\u2019s nine, it pisses me off. When I started, it was a <\/span><em><span>What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?<\/span><\/em><span> thing. My angle was irony.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Love\u2019s reference to the 1962 psychological thriller about a disturbed former-child actress is evidence that, for her, this aesthetic was created to upend girlhood, not to glorify it. Despite critique like Barnard\u2019s, the Kinderwhore interacted with the aesthetics of childhood in a way that was obviously satirical \u2013 these were grown women dressing like this, after all. Before he was famously ousted from the brand, Jacobs sent Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love samples from the collection, which didn\u2019t go down too well. \u201cDo you know what we did with it?\u201d Love <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/feature\/courtney-love-on-birkins-and-sex-3189035-1292541\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><em>WWD<\/em><span> in 2010. \u201c<\/span><span>We burned it<\/span><span>. Models read Hole lyrics aloud before descending onto the catwalk, appearing in floaty prairie dresses and brightly coloured Mary-Janes. Ewan McGregor\u2019s daughter Esther (random) closed the show in a snow-white bridal look, one that Love had personally scrawled with lyrics to her Hole hit \u201cGood Sister\/Bad Sister\u201d. With that in mind, we have the distinct feeling that the 90s Kinderwhore would\u2019ve done the exact same thing, but to the all-consuming glut of girlhood trends that have taken over our feeds in the last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s not to say that \u201cgirl\u201d trends don\u2019t have their place \u2013 lots of people find solace in the frivolity of its ruffles and folds, plus 2023 was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/life-culture\/article\/61545\/1\/2023-was-the-year-of-the-girl-barbie-taylor-swift-era-tour-tiktok-trends\"><span>the year of the girl<\/span><\/a><span>, after all. It\u2019s just that, before all those pink bows found their way onto Mary-Janes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/61566\/1\/coquette-core-trend-bow-ribbon-tiktok\"><span>gherkins<\/span><\/a><span>, the Kinderwhore\u2019s approach to the aesthetics of girlhood was a little bit different. But who was she in the first place?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"rJVZfOZ8-o8\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rJVZfOZ8-o8\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>It\u2019s often considered a toss up between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/courtney-love\"><span>Courtney Love<\/span><\/a><span> and Kat Bjelland when we think about originators of the Kinderwhore aesthetic. Before the musicians found respective fame in Hole and Babes of Toyland, the pair founded the band Pagan Babies as roommates in 1985. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The story goes that they shared clothes while living together, a compendium of babydoll dresses, Peter Pan collars, satin slips, ripped fishnets and white knee-high socks. Topped off with crimson lipstick, smudged eyeliner, and peroxide hair clipped back by barrettes, the Kinderwhore look was complete and ready to be unleashed on the world. After incubating in scuzzy punk clubs and LA dive bars, the look went properly mainstream after Hole\u2019s music video for \u201cMiss World\u201d debuted, released 30 years ago on March 28, 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Though Love and Bjelland both claim that the other had nothing to do with pioneering the look \u2013 a debate that\u2019s still going on to this day \u2013 it was actually <\/span><em><span>Melody Maker<\/span><\/em><span> journalist Everett True who coined the specific term in a 1993 interview with Love and then partner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kurt-cobain\"><span>Kurt Cobain<\/span><\/a><span>. A portmanteau of the German for \u201cchild\u201d and the self-explanatory descriptor \u201cwhore\u201d, the word clearly isn\u2019t without its controversial associations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mS1Ckczz0LQ\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mS1Ckczz0LQ\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In his 1996 book <\/span><em><span>Fashion as Communication<\/span><\/em><span>, fashion professor Malcolm Bernard described the look as \u201ca form of reversal,\u201d that mixes two already existing identities that have been devalued in society \u2013 the girl and the whore \u2013 and the resulting combination \u201cis proposed as a radical and challenging model of femininity.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unlike most modern \u2018girl\u2019 trends, the Kinderwhore\u2019s conflation of these two disparate identities actively attempted to subvert pre-conceived notions of femininity, rather than simply basking in them \u2013 but this doesn\u2019t come without its challenges. Elsewhere in the book, Bernard adds that \u201cthe possibility that reversing the status of existing identities and celebrating the result might prove to be a successful form of resistance to dominant ideas is not guaranteed.\u201d In other words, by parodying the look of an oversexualised young girl, you might end up reproducing its negative connotations rather than resisting those connotations in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"Cth9aakWf38\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cth9aakWf38\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Despite pushback like this, Love had her own ideas about the aesthetic. In a 1994 interview with <\/span><em><span>Rolling Stone<\/span><\/em><span>, though she did admit the look could potentially \u201c[get] mixed up with the idea of a woman having to be appealing to get across,\u201d there was more thought behind it than that. \u201cI didn\u2019t do the Kinderwhore thing because I thought I was so hot,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I see the look used to make one more appealing \u2013 when I see a 14-year-old girl in a fanzine acting like she\u2019s nine, it pisses me off. When I started, it was a <\/span><em><span>What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?<\/span><\/em><span> thing. My angle was irony.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Love\u2019s reference to the 1962 psychological thriller about a disturbed former-child actress is evidence that, for her, this aesthetic was created to upend girlhood, not to glorify it. Despite critique like Barnard\u2019s, the Kinderwhore interacted with the aesthetics of childhood in a way that was obviously satirical \u2013 these were grown women dressing like this, after all. Before he was famously ousted from the brand, Jacobs sent Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love samples from the collection, which didn\u2019t go down too well. \u201cDo you know what we did with it?\u201d Love <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/feature\/courtney-love-on-birkins-and-sex-3189035-1292541\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><em>WWD<\/em><span> in 2010. \u201c<\/span><span>We burned it<\/span><span>. Models read Hole lyrics aloud before descending onto the catwalk, appearing in floaty prairie dresses and brightly coloured Mary-Janes. Ewan McGregor\u2019s daughter Esther (random) closed the show in a snow-white bridal look, one that Love had personally scrawled with lyrics to her Hole hit \u201cGood Sister\/Bad Sister\u201d.
