But the pair are also being pursued in their attempts by Sauron, keen to regain his favorite piece of jewellery.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">McKellen is of course back as Gandalf for the film, alongside fellow Lord of the Rings co-star Elijah Wood as Frodo and The Hobbit cast member Lee Pace as elven king Thranduil. But previous Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen will not return \u2014 replaced instead by Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Less is known about The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, with no word yet on whether McKellen is also returning for that. (It seems unlikely, considering its setting, but at this point who knows?) The film will feature a story from Fellowship of the Ring&#8217;s third through eighth chapters, cut from Peter Jackson&#8217;s movie adaptation. This will be told in flashback, with a storyline also featuring Sam, Merry, and Pippin looking back on the events in later life, alongside Sam&#8217;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While fan reception to more Middle-earth stories had cooled somewhat by the end of Jackson&#8217;s own Hobbit trilogy, the franchise has remained lucrative and popular. For context, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy earned a combined $2.96 billion at the box office, while The Hobbit trilogy earned $2.93 billion. Frodo departs the Shire with his best friend, Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), along with fellow hobbits Merry and Pippen.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nAfter some perilous travel and character introductions, including Aragorn (Mortensen), Legolas (Bloom), and Saruman (Christopher Lee), a plan is devised to destroy the Ring in the fires of Mordor's Mount Doom, where the Rings of Power were forged. The plan is to be carried out by a ragtag group dubbed the Fellowship of the Ring: the wizard Gandalf; the hobbits Frodo, Samwise, Merry, and Pippen; the elf Legolas; the dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies); and humans Aragorn and Boromir (Sean Bean).&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nA treacherous journey leads them to Lothl\u00f3rien, an Elven realm ruled by Cate Blanchett\u2019s Galadriel, who also appears throughout The Hobbit trilogy and is one of the main protagonists of the new Amazon series (this younger version of Galadriel is played by Morfydd Clark). Gollum, exploiting the influence of the Ring, pits Frodo against Sam and leads the former into the lair of a deadly foe. The other members of the Fellowship, meanwhile, partake in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields \u2014 a massive, final fight against the dark forces of Sauron.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nFrodo and Sam ultimately enter Mordor in disguise and, with help from the other members of the Fellowship, see the original plan through. Gandalf is one of those characters, as is Aragorn. But the pair are also being pursued in their attempts by Sauron, keen to regain his favorite piece of jewellery.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">McKellen is of course back as Gandalf for the film, alongside fellow Lord of the Rings co-star Elijah Wood as Frodo and The Hobbit cast member Lee Pace as elven king Thranduil. But previous Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen will not return \u2014 replaced instead by Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Less is known about The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, with no word yet on whether McKellen is also returning for that. (It seems unlikely, considering its setting, but at this point who knows?) The film will feature a story from Fellowship of the Ring&#8217;s third through eighth chapters, cut from Peter Jackson&#8217;s movie adaptation. This will be told in flashback, with a storyline also featuring Sam, Merry, and Pippin looking back on the events in later life, alongside Sam&#8217;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While fan reception to more Middle-earth stories had cooled somewhat by the end of Jackson&#8217;s own Hobbit trilogy, the franchise has remained lucrative and popular. For context, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy earned a combined $2.96 billion at the box office, while The Hobbit trilogy earned $2.93 billion.
