We sent the first edition of this newsletter in September 2021. The first section of that covered something <\/span><i><span>Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly<\/span><\/i><span> said after a game. A lot has happened in the 1,500 newsletters since then, which I assume Kelly can talk to an AI agent about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Momentous days, in my mind, call for gifts. So I\u2019m giving presents to yesterday\u2019s big newsmakers:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To the Knicks: A broom \ud83e\uddf9<br \/>\n<\/b><span>New York is back in the Eastern Conference finals for a second straight year after walloping the 76ers, 144-114, on the road to complete a series sweep. It is a remarkable feat for a team that sputtered at points this year under a first-year coach who entered with a title-ready roster and the pressure that comes along with it. Choosing Mike Brown <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7269240\/2026\/05\/11\/knicks-76ers-mike-brown-owner-james-dolan\/\"><span>looks pretty good<\/span><\/a><span> right now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>But I am most taken with the rise of Jalen Brunson, king of New York, whose legacy is already being written, as James L. Edwards penned beautifully yesterday. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7268707\/2026\/05\/10\/ny-knicks-jalen-brunsons-legacy-playoffs-sweep-2026\/\"><span>His column is worth a read<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"article-pickem\">\n<p><b>To the Canadiens, Ducks and Timberwolves: Boxing gloves \ud83e\udd4a<br \/>\n<\/b><span>A lot of fight between these teams across sport lines. I feel like I could hear them all growling while playing yesterday:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>On the ice, Montreal is in control of its series, up 2-1 after going down 1-0, against favored Buffalo after a stunning 6-2 comeback win, which was somehow the first time the Canadiens won two straight games in these playoffs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7269228\/2026\/05\/10\/canadiens-sabres-nhl-playoffs-game-3-score-result-takeaways\/\"><span>It\u2019s easy to imagine them winning a third now<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>The same goes for Anaheim, which led wire-to-wire despite a late Vegas charge, topping the Golden Knights 4-3 and tying that series at 2-2. This has been an elite matchup, and last night <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7269593\/2026\/05\/11\/ducks-golden-knights-nhl-playoffs-game-4-score-result-takeaways\/\"><span>got chippy, too<\/span><\/a><span>. <\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>In the NBA, Minnesota cannot be quelled quietly. A 114-109 win tied its series yesterday against the vaunted Spurs, who were without superstar Victor Wembanyama for 2 1\/2 quarters after the Frenchman elbowed Naz Reid in the neck. This series clearly goes as Wemby goes, but I still come away wholly impressed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7269028\/2026\/05\/10\/spurs-timberwolves-game-4-score-result-nba-playoffs-anthony-edwards\/\">the Wolves\u2019 mettle<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_7269653\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption-image-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7269653 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2026\/05\/11013627\/USATSI_24610423_168395998_lowres-1024x683.jpg\" alt width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-credits\">\n<div class=\"inline-credits-container\">\n      <span class=\"credits-text\">Brad Penner \/ Imagn Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>To the Giants and Yankees: A stress ball \ud83e\udee9<br \/>\n<\/b><span>Our next gift lands on the baseball diamond, where two teams in opposite positions \u2014 New York is 26-15, San Francisco is 16-24 \u2014 have similar verves to their seasons:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>In the Bronx, Chris Kirschner smartly pointed out that while Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says he\u2019s not operating with urgency, his actions show otherwise. Demoting Anthony Volpe early in the season? Benching other veterans with little warning? It\u2019s always Series-or-bust with this team, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7266397\/2026\/05\/11\/yankees-roster-urgency-brian-cashman\/\"><span>but it still feels different<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>In the Bay, Giants president Buster Posey has been bold since the jump. He hired a college coach as manager, traded for Rafael Devers last season and traded away a solid defensive catcher in Patrick Bailey. The first two haven\u2019t worked out yet. As Ken Rosenthal wondered, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7269191\/2026\/05\/11\/buster-posey-san-francisco-giants-patrick-bailey-trade\/\"><span>will any of these swings connect?<\/span><\/a><span> I find this entire thing endlessly fascinating.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>To the Wizards: A charm \ud83c\udf40<br \/>\n<\/b><span>Washington <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7268132\/2026\/05\/10\/nba-draft-lottery-2026-results-wizards-jazz-grizzlies\/\"><span>won<\/span><\/a><span> the NBA lottery yesterday, a final reward for one of this season\u2019s biggest tankers before the rules change next year. The draft class is loaded, too, and the Wizards can add AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer or Darryn Peterson to a core that already has Anthony Davis and Trae Young.
