During a January earnings call, Elon Musk declared that production of the S and X Tesla models was coming to an end. \u201cWe expect to wind down S and X production next quarter and basically stop production,\u201d Musk said, adding, \u201cThat is slightly sad, but it\u2019s time to bring the S and X programs to an end, and it\u2019s part of our overall shift to an autonomous future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s ramp-down of its high-end models culminated in the production of a \u201cSignature Series\u201d of souped-up S and X Plaid models with special trim available to be purchased by a select group of invite-only VIPs, according to an X post last month by IGN\u2019s Ryan McCaffrey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The final Model S, posted earlier on Saturday was shown being assembled with the signatures of plant workers already on its panels.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a fairly subdued ending for the S and X models, one that has been overshadowed by a pivot to automation, and a shift away from what were essentially automotive luxury goods. Tesla is a separate, publicly traded company from its fellow Elon Musk-led company SpaceX, but they\u2019re now more connected than ever via the Terafab chipmaking project. Late last year, Musk was spittballing about sending Tesla\u2019s Optimus robots to Mars.<\/p>\n
