Echoes of McCartney\u2019s voice could be heard coming from the control room before the event began, with fans craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the legendary musician. Eventually, he descended the stairs into the main studio space, taking a seat in a setup made to look like a living room, with records, framed photos, and other odds and ends\u00a0 \u2013 including a street sign with the new album title on \u2013 displayed around the space.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHello, welcome to Abbey Road,\u201d McCartney said as he made himself comfortable. \u201cI\u2019m going to play the new album for you and try and think of stuff to say about it.\u201d What followed was 90 minutes of the icon\u2019s memories, harking back to his youth in Liverpool and the early days of his friendships with the rest of The Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>He described the album as containing \u201cquite a few\u201d songs that \u201cgo back in time\u201d, and pondered why he tends to write so much about the past. \u201cIt occurred to me that that\u2019s where your big bank of information is,\u201d he reasoned. \u201cIf you\u2019re Charles Dickens, you\u2019re gonna write about how your dad was in prison or something. [The past] is a very rich field of information.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3944279\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3944279\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3944279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/paul-mccartney-listening-event-credit-sonny-mccartney.jpg\" alt=\"Paul McCartney\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2896\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3944279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul McCartney credit: Sonny McCartney \/ MPL Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of those \u201cmemory songs\u201d include \u2018Down South\u2019, an acoustic-led track, which holds stories of hitchhiking with George Harrison when they first became friends. \u201cIt would be me who\u2019d suggest to John [Lennon] and George, \u2018Let\u2019s go hitchhiking\u2019,\u201d he explained. \u201cI can\u2019t see John doing that, or George. It was my thing.\u201d He repeated the suggestion again, amping up his Liverpool accent and mocking himself, before sharing a particular story about hitching a ride with Harrison on a milk float, where the Beatles guitarist had to sit on the battery and got a burn from his jeans zip \u201cconnecting to it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemories are a weird thing,\u201d he acknowledged at the end of the story. \u201cI was talking to Olivia [Harrison, George\u2019s widow] and she said, \u2018Oh yeah, George told me about that and how you got the zip burn!\u2019 I swear it was George!\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Ringo Starr tells us about the resurgence of country music \u2013 and the energy it brought to The Beatles<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\">\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2018Days We Left Behind\u2019, the first single to be released from \u2018The Boys Of Dungeon Lane\u2019, references Lennon, whom McCartney says he still gets \u201cemotional talking about\u201d, even now. The lively \u2018Home To Us\u2019, meanwhile, looks back on growing up in Liverpool and the working-class areas that McCartney, Harrison and Ringo Starr were raised in. \u201cThe three of us were raised in quite poor conditions,\u201d he told the crowd, joking that when he mentions the housing estates they called home to Americans, \u201cit sounds like <em>Downton Abbey<\/em>\u201d. \u201cNo matter how rough it was, it was home to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The track features Starr on drums and vocals, the drummer and McCartney swapping lines. Getting the track to that point wasn\u2019t without confusion, though, with McCartney explaining that Starr had laid down a drum track in producer Andrew Watt\u2019s Los Angeles studio, but was \u201cmiffed\u201d when he didn\u2019t hear of it being used in anything. McCartney asked Watt to play him the track and described it as \u201creally good \u2013 very Ringo\u201d, and decided to \u201cfinish the track up and get it to Ringo and say, \u2018Here you are, this is what you wanted\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3944277\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3944277\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3944277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/paul-mccartney-abbey-road-credit-sonny-mccartney.jpg\" alt=\"Paul McCartney\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1270\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3944277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul McCartney credit: Sonny McCartney \/ MPL Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When McCartney asked his former bandmate to sing on the track, he obliged \u2013 but only sent back vocals for the chorus. \u201cI thought, \u2018He must hate it!\u2019\u201d McCartney shared. After a conversation with Starr, they eventually got on the same page and created the first \u201cPaul-Ringo duet\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Elsewhere, \u2018The Boys Of Dungeon Lane\u2019 features the first song McCartney has written about his parents (\u2018Salesman Saint\u2019 \u2013 an ode to carrying on through hard times \u201cbecause they had to\u201d), a song inspired by the \u201chippy mood\u201d of Glastonbury (\u2018Mountaintop\u2019), a love song for his wife Nancy (\u2018Ripples In A Pond\u2019), and more.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the playback, McCartney mouthed along to the tracks, playing air guitar and drums, and occasionally picking up an acoustic guitar to demonstrate things to the audience. While speaking about \u2018Life Can Be Hard\u2019, he did just that, playing the song\u2019s main guitar sequence. When he hit a bum note, he disclosed, \u201cI haven\u2019t been practising. You\u2019d think if you knew you were doing this, then you\u2019d have practised.\u201d With a cheeky grin, he added: \u201cBut I don\u2019t care!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Boys Of Dungeon Lane\u2019 will be released on May 29 and was produced by Watt between LA and East Sussex.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the listening event, McCartney was announced as one of the guest stars on The Rolling Stones\u2019 upcoming album, \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019. While speaking about \u2018Life Can Be Hard\u2019, he did just that, playing the song\u2019s main guitar sequence. When he hit a bum note, he disclosed, \u201cI haven\u2019t been practising. You\u2019d think if you knew you were doing this, then you\u2019d have practised.\u201d With a cheeky grin, he added: \u201cBut I don\u2019t care!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Boys Of Dungeon Lane\u2019 will be released on May 29 and was produced by Watt between LA and East Sussex.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the listening event, McCartney was announced as one of the guest stars on The Rolling Stones\u2019 upcoming album, \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019.
