into NATO airspace reached an unprecedented scale last September, prompting leaders to agree to develop a &#8220;drone wall.&#8221;<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content js-article-content\">\n<p>Several drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia overnight, with two of them crashing and one causing a brief fire at an oil depot, the army said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Several unmanned aerial vehicles entered Latvian airspace&#8221; the army of the EU and NATO member bordering Russia said in a statement, adding that two of them &#8220;crashed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the drones crashed at an oil storage site in Rezekne, in the east of the country, the national police said. A fire broke out but was quickly brought under control by firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As long as Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, it is possible that such incidents will be repeated, when a foreign unmanned aircraft enters Latvian airspace or approaches it,&#8221; the army said.<\/p>\n<p>It was not immediately clear where the drones originated.<\/p>\n<p>Drones believed to be from Russia hit Latvia and neighbouring Estonia in March.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget--type-image widget--size-fullwidth widget--animation-fade-in widget--align-center\" data-ratio=\"0.6665\">\n<div drone &#8220;struck the chimney of the Auvere power plant&#8221; in Estonia, the country&#8217;s internal security ISS said in a statement, while another fell on Latvian territory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are the effects of Russia\u2019s large-scale war of aggression,&#8221; said ISS Director General Margo Palloson, expressing concern about &#8220;the occurrence of such incidents in the future.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2><strong>High alert<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Europe as a whole is on high alert after drone flyovers<\/strong> into NATO airspace reached an unprecedented scale last September, prompting European leaders to agree to develop a <strong>&#8220;drone wall&#8221;<\/strong> along their borders to better detect, track and intercept drones violating Europe&#8217;s airspace.<\/p>\n<p>In November, NATO military officials said a new US anti-drone system had been deployed to the alliance\u2019s eastern flank.<\/p>\n<p>And following a violation of Polish airspace, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced <strong>the formation of the Eastern Sentry programme<\/strong>, which aims to deter further Russian incursions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget unmanned aerial vehicles entered Latvian airspace&#8221; the army of the EU and NATO member bordering Russia said in a statement, adding that two of them &#8220;crashed.&#8221;One of the drones crashed at an oil storage site in Rezekne, in the east of the country, the national police said.
