I started writing the research myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not want to keep waiting for someone else to study the questions that matter to my body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Modern theories on training, nutrition, and recovery are predominantly written by men using research conducted on men.<\/p>\n<p>But that pesky Y chromosome means male and female physiology is not the same.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t copy-paste male-centered theories onto women and move on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s why Faulkner, an Olympic gold medalist, venture capitalist, and Harvard graduate, tapped into another of her skillsets.<\/p>\n<p>Computer science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a real need for better tools in this area of female performance,\u201d Faulkner told <em>Velo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many generalized training models do not fully reflect women\u2019s physiology. I\u2019m very bullish on that [problem]. It\u2019s a big part of what I\u2019m building,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner used her computer science degree and nine years of her own data to code menstrual patterns, hormonal shifts, and all the nuances of female physiology into a performance dashboard that actually works for women.<\/p>\n<p>Everything from watts and training load to hormonal markers and sleep data is the input of a program that Faulkner says navigated her toward a 20-minute power PB in March at the Pan-AM Championships.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cKristen System\u201d will inform Faulkner\u2019s performance this week with EF Education-Oatly at the Vuelta Espa\u00f1a Femenina.<\/p>\n<p>And for the next two years, it will be the brain behind her gold medal defense at the LA Games in 2028.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Filling blanks in a gendered view of sport science<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_915040\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-915040\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/ZW208617.jpg?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Faulkner will use her AI platform to steer her toward a medal defense at the LA Games.<\/span> (Photo: SW Pix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Faulkner isn\u2019t the only one who sees her performance future in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The AI boom is sweeping through pro cycling.<\/p>\n<p>Team Ineos last week hailed its collaboration with AI powerhouse Netcompany as \u201cone of the most significant partnerships in cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UAE Emirates-XRG, Visma-Lease a Bike, and Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe all use AI dashboards to scour thousands of datapoints and inform existing decisions about training, logistics, and programming.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Faulkner\u2019s system isn\u2019t about refining the present.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about helping build a future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMenstrual cycle phases, hormonal shifts, recovery patterns, metabolism, and even how heat and sleep interact with them can all matter [in performance],\u201d Faulkner told <em>Velo<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s a real opportunity to build more individualized, evidence-driven systems that take those factors seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope my work also encourages more organizations to invest in tools and innovation built specifically for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Faulkner said, the opportunity is huge.<\/p>\n<p>While professional women\u2019s sport is growing fast, the theories that support the female elite are way behind the curve.<\/p>\n<p>This paper from the BMJ journal of sport and exercise medicine states that female authorship of scientific publications is less than 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p>A separate 2025 review found that 46 percent of studies used male-only subjects, while just 8 percent were female-only. All told, women account for just one-third of participants across all mixed and single-sex sports science studies.<\/p>\n<p>Even in an age of smart watches, breath sensors, and marathon supershoes, there\u2019s no mass-market training platform tailored to female athletes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>More to come?
