The Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to get that far in their post-LeBron James iteration. One of them will end that drought as top-seeded Detroit takes on star-laden Cleveland in a second-round playoff series.

Both sides arrive at this matchup on the heels of inspiring Game 7 victories. Cade Cunningham’s Pistons bring revved motors and staunch physicality. Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and the Cavs counter with sleek bucket-getting. Then came this year’s revelation — a 60-22 stunner and the No. 1 seed in the East. Cunningham and Jalen Duren earned All-Star honors; head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was rewarded with a contract extension.

And still … all good vibes were nearly ripped away in the playoff opener. Detroit fell into a 3-1 deficit versus the Orlando Magic, the No. 8 seed that needed both Play-In stages to reach the bracket. The top-perched Pistons sputtered under 38 percent shooting and had 20 giveaways in their deflating Game 4 loss.

With their season in the balance, Cunningham and company came home and made a statement in Game 5. The Pistons point guard had a 45-piece across almost 44 minutes of floor time. Detroit then went to Orlando and extended its hopes yet again — crawling out of a 24-point hole through a historic clampdown.

After the defense set a record for fewest points allowed in a playoff half, Game 7 felt more like a formality. The Pistons won 116-94, spurred by Cunningham’s 32 points and Tobias Harris’ clutch 30.

For the series, Cunningham averaged an impressive 32.4 points but was also charged with an unsightly 5.9 turnovers. Harris was a solid second option at 21.6 points per game, but he shot below 29 percent on 3s. Duren struggled with just 10.6 points per game, a far cry from his 19.5 mark in the regular season. Yet for all the blemishes, Detroit led the first-round teams with a defended field goal percentage of 39.7 percent.

Advertisement

The slate now wipes clean against Cleveland, where Bickerstaff previously coached before he joined the Pistons’ sideline.

        a.showcase-link-container {
display: flex;
gap: 20px;
flex-direction: column;
align-items: center;
padding: 20px 0px;
border-top: 1px solid rgba(150, 150, 147, 0.4);
border-bottom: 1px solid rgba(150, 150, 147, 0.4);
text-decoration: none;
color: #121212;
cursor: pointer;

  .showcase-link {
font-family: nyt-franklin;
font-size: 14px;
font-style: normal;
font-weight: 700;
line-height: 13.8px;
letter-spacing: 1.1px;
text-transform: uppercase;
}

  .showcase-link-image {
border-radius: 8px;
object-fit: cover;
width: 200px;
height: 150px;
margin: 0px;
@media (max-width: 600px) {
width: 120px;
height: 120px;
}
}

  .showcase-link-inner-content {
display: flex;
flex-direction: row;
gap: 16px;
width: 100%;
}

  .showcase-link-text-content {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
gap: 20px;
justify-content: center;
@media (max-width: 600px) {
gap: 8px;
}
}

  .showcase-link-title {
font-family: nyt-cheltenham;
font-size: 24px;
font-style: normal;
font-weight: 500;
line-height: 120%; /* 24px */
letter-spacing: 0.01px;
text-overflow: ellipsis;
overflow: hidden;
display: -webkit-box;
-webkit-box-orient: vertical;
-webkit-line-clamp: 3;
@media (max-width: 600px) {
font-size: 16px;
}
}

  .showcase-link-excerpt {
font-family: nyt-imperial;
font-size: 16px;
font-style: normal;
font-weight: 400;
line-height: 139%; /* 19.46px */
color: #323232;
text-overflow: ellipsis;
overflow: hidden;
display: -webkit-box;
-webkit-box-orient: vertical;
-webkit-line-clamp: 4;
@media (max-width: 600px) {
font-size: 12px;
line-height: 121%;
}
}
}

.showcase-link-inputs {
.showcase-link-input {
width: 100%;
font-size: 1rem;
background-color: white;
margin-bottom: 12px;
}

  .showcase-link-indent {
margin-left: 25px;
}

  option {
width: 100%;
}
}

@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
.native-mobile a.showcase-link-container {
background-color: #121212;
color: #f0f0ee;
.showcase-link-excerpt {
color: #c4c4c0;
}
}
}

            // Remove all onclicks on imgs for apps to prevent image zoom on click
document.querySelectorAll(‘.showcase-link-image’).forEach((img) => img.removeAttribute(‘onclick’));

How Detroit got here

            <img decoding="async" src="https://static01.nyt.com/athletic/uploads/wp/2026/05/04052143/GettyImages-2274091322-scaled-e1777886554939-1024x683.jpg?width=400&quality=70" alt="Pistons showed grit in series comeback. Last year’s Cavaliers won an East-best 64 games, while the current group went 52-30 and notched the No. 4 seed. But head coach Kenny Atkinson navigated several sharp turns along the way.

The team started with two-time All-Star Darius Garland on the shelf as he recovered from toe surgery. Then, the front office swapped the 26-year-old Garland for the 36-year-old Harden at the trade deadline. It was an undeniable win-now move, aimed at getting out of a wide-open conference.

Pressure ratcheted up after the Cavs went from 2-0 to a 2-2 split with the Toronto Raptors in the first round. Mitchell scored 32 points in the Game 1 win and came back for 30 in Game 2, but Cleveland then dropped two fraught matchups in Canada — and Mitchell went just 6-for-24 in the 4-point Game 4 loss.

The Cavaliers got right back in Ohio, thanks to 23-point showings from both Harden and Evan Mobley. And they almost had the series sealed up in Game 6 … until RJ Barrett’s desperation long ball bounced off the rim and through the net for an overtime stinger.

Game 7 in Cleveland looked to be another heart-racer, tied through two quarters at 49 apiece. But Toronto’s offense was ultimately pushed to its limit without Brandon Ingram (heel), while Jarrett Allen dominated the glass en route to 22 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks.

Mitchell ended the series at 23.1 points per game, on 43.8/33.3 percent splits, all below his regular-season numbers. Harden averaged north of 20 points and six assists, but like Cunningham, he also had more than five turnovers per game. Allen snagged 2.7 offensive boards per contest and added 2.3 blocks. Their defense forced 25 turnovers and held the Pistons below 38 percent from the field. Mitchell tallied 35 points on 13-for-18 shooting.

Detroit claimed the first of three close calls, a 114-110 win on Jan. 4. It was down Duren and Harris in that game, but Daniss Jenkins hopped off the bench to save the afternoon with 25 points on 7-of-10 from the field. The Pistons also won on Feb. 27, a 3-point overtime thriller set up by Jenkins’ three foul shots in the waning seconds. The Cavs didn’t have their starting backcourt in that contest, though it was Duren who was the difference-maker down low with 33 points and 16 boards.

Cleveland evened the ledger on March 3, a 4-point W secured without Mitchell. Detroit topped 50 percent shooting in that one, but the Cavs made 17 treys to the Pistons’ nine. Jaylon Tyson filled in admirably with a team-high 22 points and went 5-for-12 from beyond the arc.

Pistons vs. Cavaliers playoff history

Cleveland leads the all-time series 3-1. The teams’ 2006 Eastern Conference semifinal duel was one for the ages. Not only did it go the distance, but Games 4-6 were each decided by 2 points.

Ben Wallace missed a tip-in at the cup to end Game 4, James found Drew Gooden for the go-ahead score in Game 5, and Detroit staved off elimination with a road gut-check in Game 6. Cleveland took the series in six, and the double-OT Game 5 minted a lasting NBA playoff moment — when James scored 25 consecutive points for his crew, capped by the game-winning basket in the last two seconds.

The other two series were clean Cleveland sweeps.
