next-gen GT four-door<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The performance brand perhaps best known for its engines \u2013\u00a0Mercedes-AMG \u2013 is \u2018doubling down\u2019 on them once again.<\/p>\n<p>AMG boss Michael Scheibe has confirmed to CAR that a new wave of combustion power will return to its future cars, including the V8. As the brand aims to be \u2018more AMG than ever before,\u2019 according to Scheibe, he announced to us that the brand is \u2018doubling down on our internal combustion engine cars again, but at the same time we\u2019ll put equal emphasis on our great EV line-up.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The AMG V8 is back<\/h2>\n<p>First up: the confirmed return of the V8. \u2018At the end of the year, you\u2019ll see the V8 coming back to AMG,\u2019 says Scheibe. \u2018We will launch it again with SUVs, but other cars will get it too.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/480x0\/amg-engines-23.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-261914\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/480x0\/amg-engines-23.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/720x0\/amg-engines-23.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/1040x0\/amg-engines-23.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Those \u2018other cars\u2019 almost certainly include the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/spy-shots\/mercedes-benz\/amg-cle-63-2027\/\">\u2018Mythos\u2019 special edition<\/a> based on the CLE coupe (pictured above), which has already been teased by Mercedes. This model features track-spec fixed aerodynamics, and Mercedes confirms it will remain a \u2018limited-edition collector vehicle\u2019 like the AMG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/mercedes-benz\/concept-mercedes-amg-purespeed\/\">PureSpeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This new V8 will likely be a performance variant of the M177 Evo engine that has launched in the S-Class; a flat-plane crank V8 that has mild hybrid assistance. Intel suggests the V8 will remain reasonably exclusive, though; it will likely be deployed in high-end AMG models but won\u2019t be rolled out everywhere like the good old days.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The four-cylinder PHEV AMG is dying (if not actually dead)<\/h2>\n<p>The widely panned four-cylinder plug-in hybrid (internally codenamed the \u2018P3 hybrid\u2019) system in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-reviews\/mercedes-benz\/amg-c63-s-e-performance\/\">AMG C63<\/a> is going to be replaced by a new \u2018free-revving\u2019 six-cylinder. The new engine has already been put into service in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/mercedes-benz\/amg-glc-53\/\">refreshed AMG GLC 53<\/a> with the GLC 43 and 63 being retired. Scheibe adds: \u2018the engine will also come into our facelifted C-Class.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/155963\/480x0\/mercedes_c63_s_e_performance_46.jpg?scale=down\" alt=\"Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance rear\" class=\"wp-image-191163\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/155963\/480x0\/mercedes_c63_s_e_performance_46.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/155963\/720x0\/mercedes_c63_s_e_performance_46.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/155963\/1040x0\/mercedes_c63_s_e_performance_46.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The 4cyl PHEV\u2019s application elsewhere, however, is in doubt; \u2018I don\u2019t want to give you more information as to whether we will see the P3 hybrid that we have at the moment in our GT and SL, but I will say here that we are still undecided [about its continued use] because we will have more power coming from the next generation of V8s.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>PHEVs won\u2019t entirely disappear, but the available options will shrink says Scheibe. \u2018So, the GLE 53 and E53 [PHEV] will continue, because we see it\u2019s a very good compromise for people that live in areas where there are certain restrictions [on emissions],\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n<p>But in other ways, the PHEV can be too much of a flaw; \u2018one of the downsides of the P3 powertrain was to do with the space. If you put the battery in the trunk, it came with a compromise. And, at the same time, it\u2019s a lot of weight \u2013 if you want to have a lightweight car, sometimes it\u2019s best to have a V8-only car.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The electric AMG is still coming<\/h2>\n<p>That expanded range of engine options will be accompanied by various electric cars still on their way, as Scheibe says they still have their benefits. \u2018There will be customers that want to have that combustion feeling, drive the combustion engine and you can give them a really pure V8 experience,\u2019 says Scheibe. \u2018And for those who want all of the EV KPIs in terms of acceleration and the ability to drive the car in complete silence, they can go all electric.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/480x0\/amg-engines-24.jpg?scale=down\" alt class=\"wp-image-261915\" data-interchange=\"[https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/480x0\/amg-engines-24.jpg?scale=down, (default)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/720x0\/amg-engines-24.jpg?scale=down, (medium)], [https:\/\/car-images.bauersecure.com\/wp-images\/261909\/1040x0\/amg-engines-24.jpg?scale=down, (large)]\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject hide-for-medium-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mpu-inject show-for-medium-up hide-for-xlarge-up\">\n<div class=\"mpu-ad advert\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The first of this new-generation of AMG EVs come in the shape of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/mercedes-benz\/amg-2026-gt-4-door-coupe\/\">next GT four-door<\/a> that\u2019s due to be revealed soon. This new GT four-door model will use axial flux electric motors that have been developed by YASA, with its design and interior technology teased via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmagazine.co.uk\/car-news\/first-official-pictures\/mercedes-benz\/amg-gt-xx\/\">GT XX concept<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An electric AMG SUV has been confirmed, too, and CAR understands that AMG is also working on a battery-electric AMG CLA model, after spy photographers caught an electric shooting brake model testing at the N\u00fcrburgring (pictured below).
