The Detroit Pistons and J.B. Bickerstaff have agreed on a contract extension, the team announced Monday, a day after the franchise won its first playoff series since 2008.

Bickerstaff, 47, who initially inked a fully guaranteed, four-year deal with a fifth-year team option in 2024, has a 104-60 regular-season record since taking over as the team’s head coach. Bickerstaff has developed meaningful bonds with franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham and the locker room as a whole. What exactly has been the key to Bickerstaff cultivating those relationships?

“By talking to us and understanding our stories, understanding where we come from and meeting us where we’re at,” Cunningham told The Athletic after a late January shootaround in Phoenix. “I think he does a great job of that.”

Since taking over, Cunningham has blossomed into a two-time All-Star and has been named to an All-NBA team. Pistons center Jalen Duren earned his first All-Star nod this season and, on multiple occasions, has openly credited Bickerstaff with fostering his growth as both a player and person.

The fire Bickerstaff paces the sideline aligns with the passion Detroit’s players approach the game with.

“I noticed his character fit a lot of the guys on the team,” Duren told The Athletic after a Jan. 25 win over the Sacramento Kings. “The competitive edge everybody had, (his character) fit it. … It fit that energy of just being a dawg. That was just who he was coming in. He didn’t try to change anybody. He kind of fed into it and turned it into the culture we have now. The grit, the grind — he shaped it, and that’s how we are who we are.”

Fifteen-year NBA veteran Tobias Harris spoke to Bickerstaff’s adaptability as one of his defining traits in winning over the locker room. It’s a quality that pushes Detroit to play even harder for him.

“He’s a very humble coach and has a lot of humility,” Harris told The Athletic. “(He’s been) able to feed off the guys and make everyone feel important in this environment. Some other coaches come in with a lot of ego and it’s kind of their way or the highway. … Seeing his approach to really gaining all of the guys’ respect and trust was very organic.

“You then, as players, truly want to win for the coach and respect everything he says.”

Bickerstaff has established a culture within the locker room that the players and front office believe in. The Pistons hope to have Bickerstaff leading their group for the foreseeable future.
