On May 1st, dozens of creatives gathered in New York City to capture and bear witness to this year\u2019s showcase sponsored by Sqaure and Dove.<em> Black Hair Reimagined<\/em> featured six hair artists who brought innovative and beautiful designs to life on the runway: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hair__poet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Fesa Nu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/meetthebarber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Joshua Meekins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/vernonfrancois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Vernon Fran\u00e7ois<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/issacvpoleon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Issac Poleon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/malcolm.marquez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Malcolm Marquez<\/a>, and Echelon Noir\u2019s very own Jawara Wauchope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an inspirational amalgamation of people, it\u2019s very special,\u201d London-based hair artist Poleon shared of his experience participating in the show. \u201cThese things don\u2019t really exist anymore. It\u2019s so important. Culture. The celebrity hairstylist is known for sculptural pieces inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/fesanu.com\/about-fesa-nu\/https-fesanu-com-about-fesa-nu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">her love for Africa<\/a>, and her creations for <em>Black Hair Reimagined<\/em> stretched the bounds of innovation, playing with size, texture, and shape. Styled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ronbreezy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Ronald Burton III<\/a>, her collection <em>Crowned in Ancestral Theory <\/em>brought so much of Nu\u2019s roots and the regal grace of African women to the runway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating the final piece was rooted in the tradition of headwraps, known as gele, doek, duku, just to name a few,\u201d hairstylist Nu shares about the grand chandelier-shaped piece. \u201cI was thinking about how the African woman carries so much being a mother, taking care of her family, birthing the nation and how she physically carries weight, often balancing things on her head or back in her daily work. In collaboration with stylist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jan.quammie\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Jan-Michael Quammie<\/a>, Marquez\u2019s creations grew more and more surreal as models became ensconced in hair \u2014 first a torso, then an entire upper half of the body. Pulling from the changing of the seasons, Fran\u00e7ois\u2019s creations incorporated life-sized trees, leaves, twigs and flower petals he and his team transformed and shaped by hair. From \u201cthe fabrics to the colors,\u201d the transition between autumn, winter, and spring served as his foundation for the five grandiose looks he put together with stylist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/solangefranklin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Solange Franklin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their massive scale, Fran\u00e7ois insists that none of the looks were particularly difficult or time-consuming to pull off. \u201cNothing\u2019s hard about what I do,\u201d the celebrity hairstylist admits. \u201cAnd everything is time-consuming. Even a ponytail is time-consuming.
