The American-made Aptera pursues aerodynamic efficiency with the singular focus of a bottlenose dolphin hunting a tasty crustacean. Looks like one too. That ultra slippery body helps to achieve a staggering 400 miles of range from a battery smaller than the one found in a Fiat Grande Panda. All they need to do now is build the thing – it\u2019s been endlessly delayed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The all new Compass arrives imminently, boasting huge electric range and an obligatory greenlane gobbling (not the villain in Spider-man<\/em>) AWD variant. Real world range when hooning up cliff faces will be less.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Merc\u2019s first ever electric GLC<\/a> is here with a quoted range of 406 miles. That\u2019s almost one mile for every illuminated square in its gigantic faux grille. You needn\u2019t bother turning your headlights on at night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Six years old and still one of the coolest EVs you can buy, but you\u2019ll have to spec it very carefully to make your\u00a0Polestar 2<\/a> a 400-mile car: big battery, single motor and don\u2019t be tempted by those delicious optional 20in alloys. You\u2019d be amazed how much big rims can affect an EV\u2019s range.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Tesla\u2019s first production model<\/a> has been discontinued in Europe, and the US will soon follow suit. Latter Model S variants offered bigger range than ever before, but perhaps most impressive was the fact the unfathomable\u00a0Plaid<\/a> still managed 359 miles on a charge, despite its four wheels being powered by two active volcanoes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In terms of what\u2019s available in Europe,\u00a0the e-5008<\/a>, equipped with the 97kWh battery (and driven very considerately) is your only electric option if you want to transport seven people over 400 miles without stopping. Provided they are very small, light people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Polestar\u2019s long-teased Taycan troubler<\/a> will finally touch down soon. Its range is impressive but its charging speed is even more so, with 10-80 per cent achievable in just 10 minutes at 350kW. We can see ourselves deliberately seeking out slower chargers just to buy more time to ogle its design.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It\u2019s worth noting that North American market cars use the far more stringent EPA range estimation system, as opposed to Europe\u2019s more generous WLTP. That makes\u00a0the R1T\u2019<\/a>s 420 miles all the more impressive. A fearsome feat of American engineering, and not too big for European roads. It\u2019s not too late for a RHD model, guys.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Citroen reckons its second-generation C5 Aircross is the comfort benchmark of the SUV world, thanks to its fancy Advanced Comfort Seats (armchairs, in other words), and ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’ suspension promising a \u201cmagic carpet\u201d ride. Perfect for any battle-scarred roads, in other words. It just so happens to be powered by electrons\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In a car offered with up to 1,094bhp, the biggest determining factor of range is not battery size, but your own self-restraint. Drive sufficiently zealously in a hot\u00a0Taycan<\/a> and you could likely run out of juice in fewer than 100 miles. Thankfully, you\u2019ll be far too busy getting arrested to care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The 97kWh mega battery version of\u00a0Vauxhall\u2019s large SUV<\/a> is arriving soon with an impressive quoted range. Saying that, it\u2019ll need to be\u00a0significantly<\/em> more efficient than the 73kWh version we drove to get close to that range figure in the real world. And it\u2019ll be heavier. Consider us sceptical.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A 2025 facelift brought improved efficiency and enlarged battery options, boosting the\u00a0opulent iX<\/a> beyond that magic 400 mile mark. With so much range, just think how rarely you\u2019ll have to stop, get out and be reminded what it looks like.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The angular eighth generation ES is coming soon and has its sights set firmly on the likes of BMW\u2019s i5. That\u2019s a tough match-up, but the Lexus looks up to the challenge: in RWD guise, it has the Bimmer well beaten for range. And pointiness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Not Merc\u2019s best work by any stretch –\u00a0the EQE<\/a>\u2019s computer mouse exterior lacks presence and the interior lacks the sense that anyone actually tried living with it before inflicting it upon the world – but the EV underpinnings are excellent. After a shaky start to its electric endeavours, Mercedes is definitely starting to get warmer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The lidar forehead bump has gone, so the ES90 finally looks sleek and Scandi.\u00a0Volvo\u2019s first new saloon in over five years<\/a> is every bit as exquisite as the\u00a0EX90 SUV<\/a> we dubbed our luxury family car of the year in 2024, and its more streamlined shape means it goes further too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Stellantis brands do tend to give it a bit large with their range estimates, meaning the Pugs are among the cars on this list you\u2019d likely have the hardest time\u00a0actually<\/em> getting 400 miles out of. Even so, we have a soft spot for\u00a0the e-3008<\/a>. It\u2019s an unusually cool and quirky thing, by family SUV standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

With our sensible hat on and Buzz-tinted specs removed, this is probably\u00a0the best EV Volkswagen currently sells<\/a>. Sure, it won\u2019t win any design awards but it\u2019s a masterpiece of aerodynamics, which is why the ID.7 is able to extract 400 miles from its relatively modest 86kWh battery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Who wants some fanciful concept car stats? The LFA\u2019s spiritual successor manages 435 miles to a charge while also delivering 1,000bhp from its two motors and racing from 0-60mph in less than two seconds. We keep trying to be cynical and then getting distracted by the pictures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Polestar isn\u2019t hiding in Volvo\u2019s shadow any more \u2013 it\u2019s right up there fighting with the big boys. Its first ever SUV is also its rangiest car, and a while back it set a new Guinness World Record when it managed 581 miles on one charge. And not in a perfectly conditioned laboratory either \u2013 the journey began near Norwich, taking in A and B roads, as well as the odd dual carriageway, through \u2018mixed\u2019 weather conditions. Not that we\u2019re advising you to ignore the range guess-o-meter, of course. The 3’s lineup was actually updated recently and the single motor version fitted with a smaller battery, so you’ll need an early car to get that 438-mile headline figure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Important note: if North America\u2019s EPA range testing system is the strict mother, and Europe\u2019s WLTP is the laid back dad, China\u2019s CLTC is the chaotic aunt that buys you cigarettes on your twelfth birthday. It\u2019s a test that emphasises urban driving and therefore produces very generous results. Even so, the fact that\u00a0this flightless jet<\/a> gets even close to 400 miles in the real world is remarkable. Sure it\u2019s slippery – but it\u2019s also well over 17 feet long. A wonderfully mad thing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

MG\u2019s first attempt at an upmarket saloon<\/a> isn\u2019t without its missteps – the chassis is ill-equipped to handle the absurd 731bhp erupting from the performance version and the interior has fewer buttons than a dressing gown. But 400+ miles and a sub-\u00a345k price tag are not to be sniffed at.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Done setting land speed records in your U9 hypercar? Jump into your luxurious U7 saloon and waft home astride a colossal 135kWh battery. Not a brand that does half measures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Less a conventional car brand, more a collection of mad\/genius engineers who happen to sometimes make cars, Lucid has followed up its mesmerising Air saloon<\/a> with an obligatory SUV sibling – and by all accounts it\u2019s every bit as impressive. Very, very high on the list of brands we wish we got in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

BMW calls its facelifted i7 \u201cbold\u201d, we\u2019ll let you call it whatever you like. Not that it really matters what it looks like if you\u2019re simply riding in the back \u2013 where the 31.1in, 8K widescreen display now gets an integrated camera and doubles up as a video conferencing screen. Alternatively, just stick on Interstellar<\/em> and enjoy that epic Hans Zimmer soundtrack courtesy of one of the best surround sound systems ever fitted to a car.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mustering a measly 2.2 miles per kWh,\u00a0the Escalade<\/a> is probably the least efficient car on this list. But a battery pack equivalent to that of five Renault 5s ensures you needn\u2019t care. An electric car that is about as eco-friendly as whaling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

DS\u2019s flagship<\/a> is everything French luxury cars should be: squashy, interesting and unusual. As mentioned, Stellantis brands do have a bit of a reputation for attaching overly optimistic range claims to their cars, but the lower slung No 8 will certainly get nearer 400 miles than its siblings from Citroen and Vauxhall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What Tesla may lack in design, indicator stalks and sane leadership it makes up for in battery tech nous. The EV OGs remain among the very best at eking big miles out of a modest battery and, as a result,\u00a0the updated Model 3<\/a> is the UK\u2019s cheapest car capable of 400 miles on a charge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Audi went big on aerodynamic efficiency for its\u00a0first electric execu-barge<\/a> and, more impressively, did so without producing a car that looks like a Mars bar that\u2019s been left on a radiator. Cue much head scratching at Mercedes HQ.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We\u2019ll be honest: while all the cars on this list absolutely\u00a0could\u00a0<\/em>manage 400 miles on a charge, many would require favourable conditions to do so (temperate weather, the driver having had a light lunch etc). We\u2019re now into the ones that really actually can, on a regular basis, in the real world, starting with\u00a0Merc\u2019s facelifted electric C-Class alternative. Stick to the city and you\u2019ll see around 600 miles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Meet the new EV from AUDI. No, we\u2019re not shouting, that\u2019s the name of the China-only arm of our garden variety Audi. Frankly, we wish they\u2019d share it – inside and out, it\u2019s a better piece of design than anything we\u2019ve seen from the lower case chaps for a couple of years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Another Ultium-derived GM product that takes the less subtle approach to achieving massive range. A 200kWh pack may seem wildly excessive, but keep in mind this is a workhorse with a 5.6 tonne towing capacity. You\u2019ll be grateful for the extra juice when pulling your speedboat along.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Sierra<\/a> completes our hat trick of GM electric megatrucks alongside the Silverado and Escalade. They may seem a touch vulgar to European sensibilities, but just remember that compared to their big brother, the Hummer EV, these are frugal, featherweight economy cars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You might have missed the fact that some actual specs were shared for the 00 concept amid all the\u00a0incredibly level headed and measured reactions to its design<\/em>. Jag promises the ability to add 200 miles of charge in just 15 minutes and a whopping 478 mile range. Presumably not achieved through its streamlined design or lightness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Still not the rangiest Merc on this list, but remarkably it is the cheapest. The design won\u2019t work for everyone – it\u2019s got more stars on its nose than a pimply teenager – but\u00a0the CLA<\/a> is a marvel of efficiency and deserves huge plaudits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Dubbed the most important new BMW in over 60 years (their words not ours), much is riding on the success of the new iX3. And\u00a0you can tell they haven\u2019t messed about<\/a>. Its all new platform feels two generations ahead of the Munich marque\u2019s current offerings, boasting groundbreaking advancements like cylindrical cells. Which are better because they\u2019re, erm, rounder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Hugely important car for Volvo, this, because the combustion engined XC60 is its best-selling car ever<\/em>. This is its electric sibling \u2013 a handsome, family friendly SUV that doesn\u2019t try too hard to upset the normcore. It looks like a Volvo, feels like a Volvo, and goes like a Volvo. Or possibly not, thanks to, erm, up to 671bhp. In a family SUV. Whatever. It\u2019ll still have the neighbours glancing enviously in your direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A spellbinding machine that gracefully straddles luxury limo and super-saloon while serving as a welcome reminder that there is a way to design big luxury cars other than spraying their faces with more lights than Carnaby Street at Christmas. A Plaid beats it in a straight line, but\u00a0the Lucid<\/a> wins just about everywhere else. Bring it to the UK please.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The slightly peculiar sibling in the Geely family also comprising Lotus, Polestar and Volvo, Zeekr will apparently commence its UK conquest in 2026, likely kicking things off with the 7x – a mid-size SUV (shock). Here\u2019s hoping this sleek shooting brake follows close behind. The headlines? Over five hundred miles on a charge and 0-60 in under three seconds. Although presumably not at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Again this is on China’s CLTC test, but when it’s not in its N\u00fcrburgring-smashing Ultra spec<\/a>, the Xiaomi SU7 saloon can go a very long way on a single charge. Plus, the speed of development in China means it has already been treated to a raft of updates, despite only being first released in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A BMW\u00a03 Series<\/a> \u2013 but not as you know it. It rides on the same fancy platform as the iX3, complete with four superbrains that control the steering, motors, brakes, safety systems and everything else besides. So it should be good to drive. For a really, really long way between charges, thanks to a big ol\u2019 battery pack that\u2019s bolted straight into the body. On paper it pretty much ticks every box going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mercedes-Benz set a new benchmark with the launch of its facelifted EQS, which now boasts 575 miles of range \u2013 up on the 481 miles of old. It might not be anything special to look at, but inside it gets a yoke-like steering wheel, pillar-to-pillar hyperscreen, cloud data-driven adaptive suspension, and Microsoft AI. Premium taxi firms will undoubtedly be on high alert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Perhaps you\u2019ve seen the viral clips of the ET7 demonstrating its trick active suspension system, gliding unbothered over a set of uneven speedbumps with a BMW i7 bouncing along behind for comparison. It\u2019s regarded by some as the pinnacle of Chinese automotive engineering thus far – and there are absolutely no plans to bring it to the UK any time soon. Boo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A study in slipperiness,\u00a0Merc\u2019s rolling testbed<\/a> employs every trick in the book in the name of maximising range and invents a bunch of new ones too. Highlights include an active rear diffuser that further elongates the tail at speed and a lightweight, air-cooled battery pack.
