Nintendo released some hardware before the NES, like the Game & Watch series and the Color TV-Game, but the NES revived the video game market in the U.S. and launched Nintendo into the mainstream. The boxy design has returned a few times in recent years, with the NES Classic Edition that was released in 2016, and the NES LEGO set that launched earlier in 2020.

The NES is kind of a redesign itself, loosely modeled after the Family Computer (or Famicom) released two years earlier in Japan in 1983. The Famicom Disk System added floppy disk support to the Famicom, but was only available in Japan.
' class="progressive-image jsx-2021719738 image aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9 jsx-2605834259 jsx-2338608387 hover-opacity" loading="lazy" src="image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" data-cy="progressive-image">

View 34 Images

<img decoding="async" alt="
Virtual Boy

Released: 1995

A brief foray into the Virtual Reality space decades before it would become more relevant, the Virtual Boy is an interesting footnote in Nintendo's history. After releasing in 1995, the Virtual Boy was discontinued only one year later in 1996. Due to the short lifespan, only 22 games released for the system.
