This beloved, if imperfect, fighting game garnered a lot of love from genre fanatics and DC fans alike, and it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/injustice-2-tops-the-charts-on-its-release-week\">the first fighting game to top UK sales charts in years<\/a> following its release.<\/p>\n<p>So how likely is this to be true? We know that NetherRealm Studios is working on <em>something<\/em> new. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/netherrealm-ends-mortal-kombat-1-support-as-focus-shifts-to-the-next-project\">Major update support for Mortal Kombat 1 ended in May last year<\/a>, despite prior statements indicating the game would be built upon for years to come. As part of this announcement, it was explicitly stated that focus would be spent on the studio&#8217;s &#8220;next project&#8221;, with no specific IP stated outright.<\/p>\n<p>It would also come at an interesting time for NetherRealm. Warner Bros. (with NetherRealm Studios included) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/netflix-acquires-warner-bros-in-827bn-deal-including-studios-behind-mortal-kombat-and-hogwarts-legacy\">recently acquired by Netflix in an $82.7bn deal<\/a>. Prior to this, Warner Bros <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/warner-bros-games-restructures-leadership-team-following-new-focus-on-game-of-thrones-dc-harry-potter-and-mortal-kombat\">underwent some major restructuring<\/a> as part of a pivot to refocus on \u2018key IP\u2019 like Mortal Kombat and its DC titles.<\/p>\n<p>The two IPs NetherRealm has historically worked on &#8211; DC and Mortal Kombat &#8211; are both quite popular at the moment.
