2,<\/span><\/em><span> is about to hit cinemas, reuniting many of the same cast and crew that worked on the original 2006 movie. Of course, there\u2019s Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, plus the return of writer Aline Brosh McKenna, as well as costume designer Molly Rogers, who worked under legendary costume designer Patricia Field during the first film. Before <\/span><em><span>TDWP<\/span><\/em><span>, the design duo worked together on <\/span><em><span>Sex and the City,<\/span><\/em><span> and since then, Rogers has become best known for ambitiously continuing Field\u2019s work on <\/span><em><span>And Just Like That\u2026<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s no surprise then that she was called to work on <\/span><em><span>TDWP2<\/span><\/em><span>, though Rogers herself is full of surprises. Firstly, those polarising Valentino Rockstuds (we were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69283\/1\/valentino-doubling-down-controversial-rockstud-louis-vuitton-devil-wears-prada-2\"><span>in support of them<\/span><\/a><span>) had nothing to do with her. She cuts me off the moment I mention the heels, which outraged the fashion community when they appeared in the teaser trailer last November. \u201cI didn\u2019t pick those!\u201d she stresses, hoping to clear her name. \u201cI am throwing that marketing team under the bus. Let them be chased with pitchforks and lamps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rogers explains that she was away from set, prepping in Italy, when the film\u2019s marketing team broke into the wardrobe department. \u201cMarketing people want an eye-catcher, and they insisted on that shoe, which happened to be in the wardrobe room. The wardrobe team guarded that room with their life, but they called me and said \u2018the shoe has been changed\u2019. If you\u2019re not a fashion person, you don\u2019t know that that character would not wear that trend. It\u2019s a bit flashy. Or at least, not very much of it. \u201cAnd she didn\u2019t in the first one either,\u201d Rogers explains. Why? \u201cAsk them [Prada],\u201d she responds bluntly. \u201cI made a wish list. They asked me for one\u2026 I don\u2019t know why.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prada did participate in the fashion show featured at the end of the film, a moment that pays homage to Italian fashion, for which several Italian designers leant five looks each. However, Rogers had her heart set on a devil-red Prada sweater, which she failed to obtain. \u201cI\u2019m sure there are huge meetings about this,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s something bigger and wiser than us. But what\u2019s bigger and wiser than Miranda Priestly? I\u2019d like to know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the 2006 film, Miranda wears two items from Prada: the handbag she carries in the opening credits \u2013 \u201cthe handle broke that day,\u201d Rogers adds, \u201cso we glued it back together\u201d \u2013 as well as the off-the-shoulder top that she wears when she snubs Nigel for the promotion. \u201cSome things don\u2019t get explained and that\u2019s OK. We didn\u2019t blink. We were like \u2018so, that\u2019s a no.\u2019 But it\u2019s really not important. The devil really wears anything she fucking wants to. I didn\u2019t miss it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cNo\u201d \u2013 Molly Rogers on Anna Wintour<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>It\u2019s widely accepted that the fictional, ice-cold, editor-in-chief of <\/span><em><span>Runway<\/span><\/em><span> magazine is based on <\/span><em><span>Vogue\u2019s <\/span><\/em><span>global editorial director, Anna Wintour. The author of the book, Lauren Weisberger, worked as Wintour\u2019s assistant at the turn of the century, and earlier this month, both Streep and Wintour appeared together on the cover of <\/span><em><span>Vogue\u2019s <\/span><\/em><span>May issue. After twenty years of comparisons being drawn between the fictional and real-life editor, it\u2019d be easy to assume that Wintour might have a say in Priestly\u2019s wardrobe. I ask Rogers if Wintour made contact: she shakes her head slowly and, fittingly, purses her lips. No input at all? \u201cNo,\u201d she finally confirms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is not a documentary. Meryl Streep is creating a character. The hair colour and the choice of sunglasses drove that home. Non-fashion people don\u2019t have the references: Polly Mellen or Carmen Dell\u2019Orefice \u2013 those were on our mood board. And\u2026\u201d she takes a breath before stopping herself, \u201cI\u2019m not going to say that, nevermind. It\u2019s not worth it.\u201d I wait. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fantastic fashion magazines in the world,\u201d she offers. \u201cThey <\/span><em><span>[Vogue]<\/span><\/em><span> are not the only game in town.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During fittings, Streep was particularly drawn to Milanese knitwear brand Sa Su Phi, and ended up wearing a lot of it throughout the film. It\u2019s the same brand that Rogers is wearing on the day of our interview. There\u2019s also a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/giorgio-armani\"><span>Armani<\/span><\/a> \u2013 <span>but there was supposed to be even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last September, the cast members lit up social media when they attended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dolce-gabbana\"><span>Dolce &amp; Gabbana\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> SS26 show in Milan. All in character, Streep, Hathaway and Tucci sat front row, while Simone Ashley sat behind them (because she plays an assistant). The moment was filmed and included in the movie. Initially, however, there had been plans for the cast to attend the Armani show as well as Dolce, but sadly, Giorgio Armani passed away three weeks prior. \u201cThose were the only two designers who could fit it into the fashion week schedule,\u201d says Rogers. \u201cGiorgio Armani had been so excited to host them. They [the brand] felt like it would be inappropriate to have that. It\u2019s too soon. Dolce still plays a big part in the movie, as does <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dior\"><span>Dior<\/span><\/a><span>. Emily Blunt\u2019s character Emily Charlton now works as Dior\u2019s head of PR, meaning the brand features heavily throughout. \u201cA lot of times when we have a big partner, they have certain requirements,\u201d admits Rogers, though the brand made it easy for her. Marisa Pucci, Dior\u2019s chief communications officer in the Americas, served as inspiration for Emily\u2019s wardrobe (\u201cI met this wonderful woman\u2026 she was so chic\u201d), as did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/maria-grazia-chiuri\"><span>Maria Grazia Chiuri\u2019s<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/62774\/1\/maria-grazia-chiuri-dior-scotland-le-kilt-drummond-castle-mary-queen-of-scots\"><span>Cruise 2025 collection<\/span><\/a><span>, hosted at Drummond Castle in Scotland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> had landed at Dior a week before filming started, according to Rogers, so was focused on his debut show. Somehow, he still found the time to create two custom looks for Emily. One is worn during her meeting with Donatella. The other was a ball gown that ended up being cut. \u201cI was told the movie was too long in the beginning to include the ball gown scene. I was crushed,\u201d says Rogers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As for our anti-fashion protagonist, Andy Sachs, Anne Hathaway came armed with her own ideas. \u201cShe had references that she wanted to express. She had pictures of Robert Mapplethorpe wearing a loose silk shirt \u2013 that made me think of a news room,\u201d says Rogers. \u201cPatricia [Field]\u2019s initial deep inspiration for Andrea Sachs was Annie Hall, which was a men\u2019s vest, a tie, a wide-leg pant and a hat. You know, [Diane] Keaton.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As one of fashion\u2019s most collectively treasured films, it comes as no surprise that the industry has strong opinions about the characters\u2019 wardrobes \u2013 after all, it is loosely based on all of us working at fashion publications. If the characters have poor taste, it reflects badly on us too. Rogers already experienced one wave of backlash with the Rockstuds, and given that that was only the teaser trailer, more online discourse is to be expected. \u201cThey\u2019ll do whatever they\u2019re gonna do,\u201d she says of the online chatter. \u201cThe work is done. I\u2019m hoping for longevity. Of course, there\u2019s Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, plus the return of writer Aline Brosh McKenna, as well as costume designer Molly Rogers, who worked under legendary costume designer Patricia Field during the first film. Before <\/span><em><span>TDWP<\/span><\/em><span>, the design duo worked together on <\/span><em><span>Sex and the City,<\/span><\/em><span> and since then, Rogers has become best known for ambitiously continuing Field\u2019s work on <\/span><em><span>And Just Like That\u2026<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s no surprise then that she was called to work on <\/span><em><span>TDWP2<\/span><\/em><span>, though Rogers herself is full of surprises. Firstly, those polarising Valentino Rockstuds (we were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/69283\/1\/valentino-doubling-down-controversial-rockstud-louis-vuitton-devil-wears-prada-2\"><span>in support of them<\/span><\/a><span>) had nothing to do with her. She cuts me off the moment I mention the heels, which outraged the fashion community when they appeared in the teaser trailer last November. \u201cI didn\u2019t pick those!\u201d she stresses, hoping to clear her name. \u201cI am throwing that marketing team under the bus. Let them be chased with pitchforks and lamps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rogers explains that she was away from set, prepping in Italy, when the film\u2019s marketing team broke into the wardrobe department. \u201cMarketing people want an eye-catcher, and they insisted on that shoe, which happened to be in the wardrobe room. The wardrobe team guarded that room with their life, but they called me and said \u2018the shoe has been changed\u2019. If you\u2019re not a fashion person, you don\u2019t know that that character would not wear that trend. It\u2019s a bit flashy. Or at least, not very much of it. \u201cAnd she didn\u2019t in the first one either,\u201d Rogers explains. Why? \u201cAsk them [Prada],\u201d she responds bluntly. \u201cI made a wish list. They asked me for one\u2026 I don\u2019t know why.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prada did participate in the fashion show featured at the end of the film, a moment that pays homage to Italian fashion, for which several Italian designers leant five looks each. However, Rogers had her heart set on a devil-red Prada sweater, which she failed to obtain. \u201cI\u2019m sure there are huge meetings about this,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s something bigger and wiser than us. But what\u2019s bigger and wiser than Miranda Priestly? I\u2019d like to know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the 2006 film, Miranda wears two items from Prada: the handbag she carries in the opening credits \u2013 \u201cthe handle broke that day,\u201d Rogers adds, \u201cso we glued it back together\u201d \u2013 as well as the off-the-shoulder top that she wears when she snubs Nigel for the promotion. \u201cSome things don\u2019t get explained and that\u2019s OK. We didn\u2019t blink. We were like \u2018so, that\u2019s a no.\u2019 But it\u2019s really not important. The devil really wears anything she fucking wants to. I didn\u2019t miss it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cNo\u201d \u2013 Molly Rogers on Anna Wintour<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>It\u2019s widely accepted that the fictional, ice-cold, editor-in-chief of <\/span><em><span>Runway<\/span><\/em><span> magazine is based on <\/span><em><span>Vogue\u2019s <\/span><\/em><span>global editorial director, Anna Wintour. The author of the book, Lauren Weisberger, worked as Wintour\u2019s assistant at the turn of the century, and earlier this month, both Streep and Wintour appeared together on the cover of <\/span><em><span>Vogue\u2019s <\/span><\/em><span>May issue. After twenty years of comparisons being drawn between the fictional and real-life editor, it\u2019d be easy to assume that Wintour might have a say in Priestly\u2019s wardrobe. I ask Rogers if Wintour made contact: she shakes her head slowly and, fittingly, purses her lips. No input at all? \u201cNo,\u201d she finally confirms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is not a documentary. Meryl Streep is creating a character. The hair colour and the choice of sunglasses drove that home. Non-fashion people don\u2019t have the references: Polly Mellen or Carmen Dell\u2019Orefice \u2013 those were on our mood board. And\u2026\u201d she takes a breath before stopping herself, \u201cI\u2019m not going to say that, nevermind. It\u2019s not worth it.\u201d I wait. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fantastic fashion magazines in the world,\u201d she offers. \u201cThey <\/span><em><span>[Vogue]<\/span><\/em><span> are not the only game in town.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During fittings, Streep was particularly drawn to Milanese knitwear brand Sa Su Phi, and ended up wearing a lot of it throughout the film. It\u2019s the same brand that Rogers is wearing on the day of our interview. There\u2019s also a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/giorgio-armani\"><span>Armani<\/span><\/a> \u2013 <span>but there was supposed to be even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last September, the cast members lit up social media when they attended <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dolce-gabbana\"><span>Dolce &amp; Gabbana\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> SS26 show in Milan. All in character, Streep, Hathaway and Tucci sat front row, while Simone Ashley sat behind them (because she plays an assistant). The moment was filmed and included in the movie. Initially, however, there had been plans for the cast to attend the Armani show as well as Dolce, but sadly, Giorgio Armani passed away three weeks prior. \u201cThose were the only two designers who could fit it into the fashion week schedule,\u201d says Rogers. \u201cGiorgio Armani had been so excited to host them. They [the brand] felt like it would be inappropriate to have that. It\u2019s too soon. Dolce still plays a big part in the movie, as does <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/dior\"><span>Dior<\/span><\/a><span>. Emily Blunt\u2019s character Emily Charlton now works as Dior\u2019s head of PR, meaning the brand features heavily throughout. \u201cA lot of times when we have a big partner, they have certain requirements,\u201d admits Rogers, though the brand made it easy for her. Marisa Pucci, Dior\u2019s chief communications officer in the Americas, served as inspiration for Emily\u2019s wardrobe (\u201cI met this wonderful woman\u2026 she was so chic\u201d), as did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/maria-grazia-chiuri\"><span>Maria Grazia Chiuri\u2019s<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/fashion\/article\/62774\/1\/maria-grazia-chiuri-dior-scotland-le-kilt-drummond-castle-mary-queen-of-scots\"><span>Cruise 2025 collection<\/span><\/a><span>, hosted at Drummond Castle in Scotland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/jonathan-anderson\"><span>Jonathan Anderson<\/span><\/a><span> had landed at Dior a week before filming started, according to Rogers, so was focused on his debut show. Somehow, he still found the time to create two custom looks for Emily. One is worn during her meeting with Donatella. The other was a ball gown that ended up being cut. \u201cI was told the movie was too long in the beginning to include the ball gown scene. I was crushed,\u201d says Rogers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As for our anti-fashion protagonist, Andy Sachs, Anne Hathaway came armed with her own ideas. \u201cShe had references that she wanted to express. She had pictures of Robert Mapplethorpe wearing a loose silk shirt \u2013 that made me think of a news room,\u201d says Rogers. \u201cPatricia [Field]\u2019s initial deep inspiration for Andrea Sachs was Annie Hall, which was a men\u2019s vest, a tie, a wide-leg pant and a hat. You know, [Diane] Keaton.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As one of fashion\u2019s most collectively treasured films, it comes as no surprise that the industry has strong opinions about the characters\u2019 wardrobes \u2013 after all, it is loosely based on all of us working at fashion publications. If the characters have poor taste, it reflects badly on us too. Rogers already experienced one wave of backlash with the Rockstuds, and given that that was only the teaser trailer, more online discourse is to be expected. \u201cThey\u2019ll do whatever they\u2019re gonna do,\u201d she says of the online chatter. \u201cThe work is done. I\u2019m hoping for longevity.
