Marvel\u2019s struggle to match the might of Endgame since its 2019 release is well documented, and the now defunct DC Extended Universe went out with a whimper when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came out in 2023. Sure, there have been bright spots. The Spider-Man movies continue to draw critical and commercial acclaim, and let\u2019s not forget Deadpool &amp; Wolverine brought in over $1 billion at the box office. But, all told, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that audiences became tired by the sheer volume of superhero\u2026 content, most of which struggled to match the quality of previous phases.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">But, for Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios alongside James Gunn, there was never superhero fatigue. Safran and Gunn promise a body horror picture that is R-rated as well.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\n\nGiven Deadline's previous report that Clayface is one of the major villains debuting in The Batman Part II, and the fact that the Clayface movie is being produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris' 6th &amp; Idaho Productions, it had been assumed that this movie would be set in The Batman universe rather than the DCU. But Gunn has since said that it is in fact unrelated to The Batman Epic Crime Saga and is definitely part of the DCU. CEO David Zaslav revealed on an investor call, &quot;We're thrilled to share that James Gunn is already writing and preparing to direct the next installment within the 'Super-Family.'&quot; Previously, Gunn told EW that his next project isn't exactly Superman 2, saying, &quot;Is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.&quot;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\n\nGunn surprised DC fans by tweeting out the title and release date of the film. Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027, almost exactly two years after Superman's release. The accompanying Jim Lee artwork suggests the film will focus on an alliance between David Corenswet's Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor, as the two confront a common enemy (Brainiac? The essential story on which Supergirl is based is something cool and original and we haven\u2019t seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Supergirl follows on from last year\u2019s DCU kickstarter, Superman, and stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman in the DCEU, appears in the movie as Lobo, with Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, the villain of the piece. Kara, driven to drink by the destruction of her homeworld, fights to save Krypto the Superdog from dying from the effects of some sort of poison.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Here\u2019s the official blurb:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Supergirl is heavily inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely&#8217;s comic, Woman of Tomorrow, which features a very different Supergirl than audiences are perhaps accustomed to. IGN attended a press conference last year in which Gunn, Alcock, and director Craig Gillespie talked enthusiastically about Supergirl. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin.\u201d\n&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nKara was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she had to live there for the first 14 years of her life. According to Gunn, she was in a \u201chorrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. This was when we also learned, via Kal-El, that Kara \u201clikes to go and party on other planets. \nPlanets with red suns. Because of our metabolism, we can\u2019t get drunk on a planet with a yellow sun.\u201d\n&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nAll of this explains why Krypto sometimes acts the way he does while also being a wonderful dog, and we should learn more about him in Supergirl. The Spider-Man movies continue to draw critical and commercial acclaim, and let\u2019s not forget Deadpool &amp; Wolverine brought in over $1 billion at the box office. Because of our metabolism, we can\u2019t get drunk on a planet with a yellow sun.\u201d\n&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\nAll of this explains why Krypto sometimes acts the way he does while also being a wonderful dog, and we should learn more about him in Supergirl.
