The Renault 5 Turbo 3E<\/a> is a fantastically bonkers hot hatch with carbon bucket seats, a hydraulic handbrake and two in-wheel electric motors out back that make a total of 547bhp. It also has brilliantly boxy arches that are stuck on the sides of the current R5\u2019s retrotastic body, and not only does that make it look completely excellent, but it turns out it makes it rather easy to recreate in Lego form.<\/p>\n

\u201cAngular cars are easier to do in Lego, so the R5 was a natural choice,\u201d says British engineer Dave Collins, who put this set together and has submitted it to the Lego Ideas platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPlus, it looks great, and it\u2019s immediately recognisable as an update of the Eighties classic. I\u2019ve certainly tried to race a few off the lights in my youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

We say easy, but this 1,200-piece set still took Collins around 100 hours to create. It now needs 10,000 supporters on the Ideas site to be in with a chance of becoming an official Lego set, and Renault itself is backing the campaign to get it there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There\u2019s no word on how much the brick built Turbo 3E would cost if it were to reach proper production, but we\u2019d wager it\u2019d be slightly less than the \u00a3140,000 you\u2019d need for one of the 1,980 full size versions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
