The company\u2019s staff debated alerting police but ultimately decided against it, eventually reaching out to Canadian authorities after the shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI has since said that it is improving safety protocols, for example by putting more flexible criteria in place to determine when accounts get referred to authorities, and by establishing direct points of contact with Canadian law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Altman\u2019s letter, which was first published in the local newspaper Tumbler RidgeLines, the CEO said he\u2019d discussed the shooting with Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka and British Columbia Premier David Eby, and they\u2019d all agreed \u201ca public apology was necessary,\u201d but \u201ctime was also needed to respect the community as you grieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,\u201d Altman said. \u201cWhile I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Altman also said that OpenAI\u2019s focus will \u201ccontinue to be on working with all levels of government to help ensure nothing happens like this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a post on X, Eby said Altman\u2019s apology is \u201cnecessary, and yet grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-techcrunch-inline-cta\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__flag\">Techcrunch event<\/div>\n<div class=\"inline-cta__content\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__header-container\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__header-container-desktop\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-cta__header has-h-5-font-size\">Meet your next investor or portfolio startup at Disrupt<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"inline-cta__subheader\">Your next round.
