Felt has unveiled an update to its Breed gravel bike that completely overhauls its flagship gravel race bike.<\/p>\n

The Felt Breed has been a staple of the gravel scene over the last few years as it has been the bike of choice for top riders like Dylan Johnson, Adam Roberge, and Danni Shrosbree (who has since moved to Argon 18). In particular, Dylan Johnson has brought much attention to the bike as he has been an early adopter and vocal proponent of 2.2-inch mountain bike tires on gravel bikes.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the new Felt Breed goes to great lengths to retain clearances of 54mm in the front and 52mm in the rear, while adjusting the frame construction to provide more stability over rough terrain, reconfiguring the bike to support gravel suspension forks, and reducing the weight of the overall system by cutting the amount of carbon used throughout the frame.<\/p>\n

We have seen this bike coming for a few weeks now, first spotting it at Mid South Gravel before grabbing a few photos of the frame under Dylan Johnson at Sea Otter, but regardless, the new Breed does pack a ton of interesting features into the revamped frame. Let\u2019s get into the details.<\/p>\n

The key details of the Felt Breed gravel bike<\/h2>\n

Right off the bat, the new Breed takes a very different approach to frame shaping. Instead of the gentler joints and a softer look, the new Breed is angular and modern. From the front to the rear, the bike has been refined to improve aerodynamics, fit, and weight of the system.<\/p>\n

The two obvious design departures are the front end and the dropped chainstays. The suspension-corrected front end is only part of the reimagined front end, which also includes a slimmer and shorter head tube, slacker angles for increased stability, and a new one-piece integrated cockpit. The one-piece cockpit, in particular, is a big step forward for the bike as a complete aero-racing system. The cockpit, which is the same as what is offered on Felt\u2019s new Nexar road bike, comes in three different sizes as part of Breed stock builds. It is also available in four different aftermarket sizes.<\/p>\n

In the rear, the seatstays are brought way down from the previous iteration. Like the adjustments to the front end, this is meant to preserve the overall weight of the bike and boost aerodynamics. By dropping the seat stays, the idea is that drag will be reduced by shrinking the frontal area of the bike and moving the turbulence generated by the seat stays to already turbulent air around the wheel rather than the cleaner air around the seat post and top tube.<\/p>\n

Balancing aero, weight, and fit priorities<\/h3>\n

Throughout the bike, that is the cohesive motif: reduce volume, straighten lines, and reduce the height of the bike in areas where it won\u2019t compromise fit. Those motifs are geared towards Felt\u2019s priorities to make a pure gravel race bike that significantly moves the needle in both weight and aerodynamics of the frame. Ultimately, Felt claims that the Breed met both of these criteria with flying colors.<\/p>\n

In terms of aerodynamics, the Breed has a 10.5% reduction in aerodynamic drag compared to the previous Breed frame. It is unclear whether that comparison was just between the two frame sets, complete bikes, or complete bikes with riders \u2014 not to mention what tire width and wheel depth were used \u2014 but regardless, a 10% difference is significant even if it is just the frame and the new integrated cockpit in isolation.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the weight of the frame is greatly reduced as well. The new Breed weighs in at 950g in size 54. For comparison, that cuts around 150 grams from the previous model. Felt claims that the complete bike weight for a Breed FRD build, the top-spec SRAM Red option, is 7.04 kg (15.5 pounds), which is a full 22% reduction compared to the equivalent spec of the previous Breed.<\/p>\n

Retaining large clearances, rather than pushing it too much further<\/h3>\n

The previous Breed was an early adopter of the large clearances, with Dylan Johnson championing 2.2-inch tires as the best option for his racing setups. Interestingly, the previous Breed model did not officially fit 2.2-inch tires, with a stated front and rear tire clearance of 50mm (2.0 inches).<\/p>\n

It is an open secret that many pros push tires past the stated clearance of the bike, but with the popularity of large-volume tires on gravel bikes, Felt has given the Breed a few more millimeters on both the front and rear. Officially, the new Breed can comfortably fit 54mm tires in the front and 52mm tires in the rear.<\/p>\n

While the bike is unapologetically race-oriented, there are a few other elements that make the Breed a fairly dynamic option, beyond pure speed. On the frame, there are up to four bottle mounts and full dropper post compatibility, which, paired with the large tires and suspension-capable frame, could effectively turn the Breed into an elite adventure bike.<\/p>\n

The Felt Breed will be available in four different build specs and as a frame kit, which includes the frame and the Felt cockpit.<\/p>\n

The four build options are called the Expert, Race, Pro, and FRD. The Expert is the lowest spec, while the FRD is the premium offering. All the builds are finished with SRAM components, Vision wheels, and SRAM \u2013 DUB BSA 73 road bottom brackets.<\/p>\n
