{"id":1899082,"date":"2026-04-23T16:51:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1899082"},"modified":"2026-04-23T16:51:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T13:51:44","slug":"james-gunn-confirms-when-clayface-is-set-in-the-dc-universe-timeline-as-fans-wonder-whether-batman-will-turn-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1899082","title":{"rendered":"James Gunn Confirms When Clayface Is Set in the DC Universe Timeline, as Fans Wonder Whether Batman Will Turn Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-cy=\"article-content\" class=\"jsx-2870106660 article-content page-0\">\n<section data-cy=\"article-subtitle\" class=\"article jsx-3932497636 article-section jsx-28683165 news\" data-autopogo=\"true\">\n<section class=\"article-page\">\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">DC Universe chief James Gunn has confirmed that upcoming movie <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/clayface-dcu-movie-burning-questions-batman-james-gunn\">Clayface<\/a>, which just received its debut trailer, is set before last year\u2019s Superman.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/superman-2025\">Superman<\/a> kickstarted the rebooted DCU last summer, this summer\u2019s <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/supergirl-2026\">Supergirl<\/a> will continue it, and next year\u2019s <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/man-of-tomorrow\">Man of Tomorrow<\/a> will act as a Superman sequel, Clayface is set before them all \u2014 despite coming out this September.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamesgunn\/replies\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a series of posts on threads<\/a>, Gunn made Clayface\u2019s place on the DCU timeline clear. \u201cBefore,\u201d he said, when asked if it was set before or after Superman. \u201cIt&#8217;s the first DCU film out of chronological order.&#8221; Presumably, this means that during the events of Clayface, Superman villain Lex Luthor is out doing his thing, and Superman has yet to find out the truth behind his place on Earth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jsx-2021719738 video jsx-2008855984 aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9\">\n<div class=\"badge jsx-1349606671 jsx-3647116352\"><span class=\"ign-icon icon-play jsx-2750866048 jsx-1044454891\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"false\" data-cy=\"icon-play\" aria-label=\"Play\" style=\"background:currentColor\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Gunn went on to offer a few more tidbits on what Clayface is trying to achieve, and what it might mean for the DCU. &#8220;It&#8217;s very connected,\u201d he said of Clayface\u2019s role in the larger DCU plan, \u201cbut as always the standalone story is what&#8217;s most important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Clayface is very different to any DCU project we have seen or we know to be in the works. It\u2019s a body horror film based around a classic Batman villain, and, if you\u2019ve seen the debut trailer, you\u2019ll know it\u2019s doubling down on the body horror.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The DCU will include more films of different genres as well as standard superhero fare, Gunn explained.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cFrom the start we&#8217;ve been clear the DCU would be interconnected but each project would be full expressions of their writers and directors (similar to how DC Comics work &#8211; &#8216;Saga of the Swamp Thing&#8217;, &#8216;Justice League International&#8217;, &#8216;Killing Joke&#8217;, &amp; &#8216;All-Star Squadron&#8217; are not one tone, and neither are Superman, Lanterns, Peacemaker, &amp; Clayface),\u201d he said. \u201cThe film or show will play in whatever genre suits the story best. But Gunn has since said that it is in fact unrelated to The Batman Epic Crime Saga and is definitely part of the DCU. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav revealed on an investor call, &quot;We're thrilled to share that James Gunn is already writing and preparing to direct the next installment within the 'Super-Family.'&quot; Previously, Gunn told EW that his next project isn't exactly Superman 2, saying, &quot;Is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.&quot;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;\n\nGunn surprised DC fans by tweeting out the title and release date of the film. Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027, almost exactly two years after Superman's release. The accompanying Jim Lee artwork suggests the film will focus on an alliance between David Corenswet's Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor, as the two confront a common enemy (Brainiac? General Zod? Doomsday?). We wouldn't be at all surprised if the film also stars Milly Alcock's Supergirl, along with potentially other members of the Superman extended family (Steel? Superboy? The film is confirmed to have survived the recent turmoil at Warner Bros. Discovery, and Reeves has even signed a multi-year first-look deal with the studio. There's no word yet on what it will be about, so begin your Joker speculation now. The release date of the film has been pushed a couple of times now, first from October 2025 to October 2026, and then to October 2027. It seems unlikely, given Gunn has yet to indicate he\u2019s remotely close to sorting out his plans for the troublesome <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/batman-the-brave-and-the-bold\">The Brave and the Bold<\/a>. Gunn must navigate next year\u2019s release of The Batman 2 and potentially The Batman 3, which exist in a universe separate to the ongoing DCU, while setting out plans to introduce Batman into his universe.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The Batman 2, starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, is set to launch five-and-a-half years after The Batman, on October 1, 2027. Writer-director Matt Reeves has said he set out to make a trilogy of Batman films as part of his <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-batman-universe-is-called-the-batman-epic-crime-saga\"><u>Batman Epic Crime Saga<\/u><\/a>, and as of 2024 that plan was still on.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Since Gunn has ruled out Pattinson\u2019s Batman crossing over into the DCU, we\u2019re set for a new actor to play the Caped Crusader for The Brave and the Bold. <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dcu-chief-james-gunn-wont-have-2-batman-movies-come-out-in-the-same-year-tells-fans-not-to-expect-a-brave-and-the-bold-update-until-after-the-batman-2\"><u>Gunn has suggested fans won\u2019t get an update on The Brave and the Bold until after The Batman 2 comes out<\/u><\/a>, so we\u2019re probably looking at 2028 at the earliest for news. \u201cI&#8217;m dependent on when there&#8217;s an actionable script ready so there is no way of me guessing this,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamesgunn\/post\/DTqSIlEEW2h\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>he said<\/u><\/a>. \u201cAlso, frankly, we&#8217;re well into Batman 2, and I wouldn&#8217;t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Gunn then committed to never releasing two Batman movies in the same year. \u201cI think both Batman and WW [Wonder Woman] are incredibly important,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamesgunn\/post\/DTqU50NEQOB\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>he said in response to another fan<\/u><\/a>. \u201cBut I&#8217;m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While promoting Superman last year, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/james-gunn-says-batman-is-my-biggest-issue-in-all-of-dc-right-now-im-not-interested-in-a-funny-campy-batman\"><u>Gunn admitted &#8220;Batman&#8217;s my biggest issue in all of DC right now.&#8221;<\/u><\/a> While fans wait for The Brave and the Bold to see Gunn&#8217;s Batman in all his glory, Episode 6 of DCU canon animated show <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/tv\/creature-commandos\"><u>Creature Commandos<\/u><\/a> showed Batman standing on a rooftop looking down at crime boss Doctor Phosphorus. The image below revealed a mega-stacked Caped Crusader in his iconic costume, but there was little else that could be discerned about Gunn\u2019s take on the superhero.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-313219616\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2026\/04\/23\/batman-1776962478391.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"null\" class=\"progressive-image article-image article-image-full-size jsx-1809694635 jsx-2338608387\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"><\/a><figcaption data-cy=\"caption\" class=\"caption jsx-1762799490 jsx-479945570 article-image-caption\">Batman in Creature Commandos. Image credit: HBO Max.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Based on comments Gunn issued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=shared&amp;v=o1FIzO4VBW4\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Rotten Tomatoes TV<\/u><\/a> following the release of Episode 6, it\u2019s easy to see why this brief look at Batman was so generic. <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dont-read-too-much-into-the-latest-dcu-batman-reveal-james-gunn-kept-asking-for-more-silhouette-because-hes-not-ready-to-commit-to-character-details\"><u>Gunn said he had asked for &#8220;more silhouette&#8221;<\/u><\/a> after the original Batman on show was more detailed than he was ready to commit to at the time.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">What this look at Batman did provide fans with, Gunn explained, was a clear indication that Batman not only already exists within the DCU during the events of Creature Commandos and Superman (and, presumably, Clayface), but that he is well-known within the universe, and that\u2019s why there\u2019s no need to tell his well-documented origin story.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Perhaps we&#8217;ll get a similar sort of Batman silhouette in Clayface, but I think it&#8217;s more likely that we&#8217;ll get the odd knowing reference, if we get anything Batman related at all.<\/p>\n<div data-cy=\"accent-divider\" class=\"jsx-3449795453 divider jsx-2786329600\"><\/div>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><em>Photo Courtesy Warner Bros. Gunn must navigate next year\u2019s release of The Batman 2 and potentially The Batman 3, which exist in a universe separate to the ongoing DCU, while setting out plans to introduce Batman into his universe.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The Batman 2, starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, is set to launch five-and-a-half years after The Batman, on October 1, 2027. Writer-director Matt Reeves has said he set out to make a trilogy of Batman films as part of his <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-batman-universe-is-called-the-batman-epic-crime-saga\"><u>Batman Epic Crime Saga<\/u><\/a>, and as of 2024 that plan was still on.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Since Gunn has ruled out Pattinson\u2019s Batman crossing over into the DCU, we\u2019re set for a new actor to play the Caped Crusader for The Brave and the Bold. <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dcu-chief-james-gunn-wont-have-2-batman-movies-come-out-in-the-same-year-tells-fans-not-to-expect-a-brave-and-the-bold-update-until-after-the-batman-2\"><u>Gunn has suggested fans won\u2019t get an update on The Brave and the Bold until after The Batman 2 comes out<\/u><\/a>, so we\u2019re probably looking at 2028 at the earliest for news. \u201cI&#8217;m dependent on when there&#8217;s an actionable script ready so there is no way of me guessing this,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamesgunn\/post\/DTqSIlEEW2h\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>he said<\/u><\/a>. \u201cAlso, frankly, we&#8217;re well into Batman 2, and I wouldn&#8217;t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Gunn then committed to never releasing two Batman movies in the same year. \u201cI think both Batman and WW [Wonder Woman] are incredibly important,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jamesgunn\/post\/DTqU50NEQOB\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>he said in response to another fan<\/u><\/a>. \u201cBut I&#8217;m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While promoting Superman last year, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/james-gunn-says-batman-is-my-biggest-issue-in-all-of-dc-right-now-im-not-interested-in-a-funny-campy-batman\"><u>Gunn admitted &#8220;Batman&#8217;s my biggest issue in all of DC right now.&#8221;<\/u><\/a> While fans wait for The Brave and the Bold to see Gunn&#8217;s Batman in all his glory, Episode 6 of DCU canon animated show <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/tv\/creature-commandos\"><u>Creature Commandos<\/u><\/a> showed Batman standing on a rooftop looking down at crime boss Doctor Phosphorus. The image below revealed a mega-stacked Caped Crusader in his iconic costume, but there was little else that could be discerned about Gunn\u2019s take on the superhero.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-313219616\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2026\/04\/23\/batman-1776962478391.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"null\" class=\"progressive-image article-image article-image-full-size jsx-1809694635 jsx-2338608387\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"><\/a><figcaption data-cy=\"caption\" class=\"caption jsx-1762799490 jsx-479945570 article-image-caption\">Batman in Creature Commandos. Image credit: HBO Max.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Based on comments Gunn issued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=shared&amp;v=o1FIzO4VBW4\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Rotten Tomatoes TV<\/u><\/a> following the release of Episode 6, it\u2019s easy to see why this brief look at Batman was so generic. <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dont-read-too-much-into-the-latest-dcu-batman-reveal-james-gunn-kept-asking-for-more-silhouette-because-hes-not-ready-to-commit-to-character-details\"><u>Gunn said he had asked for &#8220;more silhouette&#8221;<\/u><\/a> after the original Batman on show was more detailed than he was ready to commit to at the time.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">What this look at Batman did provide fans with, Gunn explained, was a clear indication that Batman not only already exists within the DCU during the events of Creature Commandos and Superman (and, presumably, Clayface), but that he is well-known within the universe, and that\u2019s why there\u2019s no need to tell his well-documented origin story.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Perhaps we&#8217;ll get a similar sort of Batman silhouette in Clayface, but I think it&#8217;s more likely that we&#8217;ll get the odd knowing reference, if we get anything Batman related at all.<\/p>\n<div data-cy=\"accent-divider\" class=\"jsx-3449795453 divider jsx-2786329600\"><\/div>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><em>Photo Courtesy Warner Bros.
