\n\tChatting at a studio in her native Los Angeles, Becky G \u2014 who is the Global Impact honoree at Billboard<\/em>\u2018s 2026 Latin Women In Music gala, taking place on April 23 in Miami \u2014 describes being at the Roberto Cavalli Fall\/Winter 2026-27 fashion show, and the very next day shooting the \u201cMarathon\u201d music video. \u201cIt was just like, \u2018boom boom boom.\u2019 Like, \u2018Wow, I\u2019m living the life,\u2019 \u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make videos that feel like you don\u2019t necessarily know where Becky is \u2014 to feel more global,\u201d says Daniela Matos, Becky\u2019s creative director, noting the shift from the \u201cMiami vibe\u201d of her earlier Latin urban music videos.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarathon,\u201d the lead single off Becky G\u2019s upcoming summer album, pulls threads from every corner of her story: the effortless way she flows between English and Spanish, the nod to her early music, and the image of an ascending international pop star hitting her stride. In the opening sequence, Becky samples \u201cShower,\u201d her now billion-stream 2014 pop smash that first propelled her into stardom at just 17 years old and jumped to No. 2 on Billboard<\/em>\u2018s Hot Rap Songs chart. This callback acts as a reminder of how far the Inglewood-bred singer has come.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cReflecting that full circle moment was important for me, because we\u2019ve been here,\u201d Becky G tells Billboard<\/em> today. She\u2019s dressed in an elegant, business-like tube top, paired with heels, and her long black hair cascades all the way to her waist. As she speaks, Becky demonstrates her natural ability to code-switch, comfortably transitioning between English and Spanish throughout the interview. \u201cI said this the other day to my fans: \u2018If you know, you know. And if you don\u2019t know, you are about to find out,\u2019 \u201d she says, referencing her new music and her return to spitting rap bars, a skill that defined much of her earlier work.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer forthcoming fifth full-length marks Becky\u2019s return to her roots as a rapper \u2014 the same foundation that helped make her a star over a decade ago. Becky has steadily built an impressive resume: Esquinas<\/em> (2023), Esquemas<\/em> (2022) and Mala Santa<\/em> (2019) all entered the Billboard 200 chart. She scored eight Billboard Hot 100 hits, including \u201cMAMIII\u201d with Karol G (a No. 15 peak), \u201cShower\u201d (No. 16) and \u201cChanel\u201d with Peso Pluma (No. 55). Her presence on Hot Latin Songs is even more frequent, with six top 10 entries, among them \u201cMayores\u201d (No. 3 with Bad Bunny), \u201cSin Pijama\u201d (No. 4 with Natti Natasha) and the chart-topping \u201cMAMIII.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Becky\u2019s past two albums \u2014 including 2024\u2019s Encuentros<\/em>, which explored rancheras<\/em> and corridos<\/em> \u2014 celebrated her Mexican heritage, her upcoming release represents an evolution, combining the confidence of her early rap-adjacent sound with an unapologetic pop focus. For fans who have followed her journey since the early days, Becky\u2019s return to rapping feels less like revisiting the past and more like forging ahead.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I returned to my roots through Mexican music, something inside me healed,\u201d she explains. \u201cAs an artist, I felt it gave me a chance to reconnect with my heritage, my childhood and my inner child \u2014 to embrace her and take better care of her. Just to catch up with her.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs I was healing throughout making those albums,\u201d Becky continues, \u201cit allowed me to leave these things there to make room for other things. And rap is also part of my roots. Because you\u2019ve been following me for long enough, you know that that\u2019s how I got signed as an MC.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, in what her team calls her \u201creverse crossover,\u201d Becky is reclaiming her rap roots while weaving in her Latin heritage. \u201cShe started as a rapper, but she also was a singer at the same time,\u201d says Marc Jordan, who\u2019s been co-managing Becky G since she was 14 alongside Ben Tischker. \u201cOne thing she always said [was], \u2018I want to rap again, I want to rap again, I want to rap again.\u2019 We [started] in the general market and then into the Latin space. Now we\u2019re back into the general market with a splash of Spanish.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTischker adds, \u201cShe started on the Anglo side. She\u2019s always worked with amazing collaborators and is very good at choosing which collaborators best fit her for where she\u2019s at in her life. One of the biggest changes over the years was to go to the Latin space, four or five years into her career \u2014 when she was 17 or 18. That opened up a whole new lane for her \u2026 Now we\u2019re coming back into pop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe still-untitled new album sees her embracing every corner of her musical journey. Tracks like \u201cChula\u201d dazzle with R&B reggaet\u00f3n-tinged elegance, laced with dreamy instrumentation, while in \u201c5\u20195,\u201d Becky glides through glitchy electro-pop textures with sharp lyricism. \u201cEpa\u201d \u2014 a euphoric dance floor cut, scheduled to arrive May 15 \u2014 erupts into Spanish-language rave chaos. Then there\u2019s \u201cGlitch,\u201d full of L.A.-Mexicana wordplay and one of the highlights of her new work.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe big thing is her art has no walls. Yes, she can sing in Spanish. Yes, she can sing English. Yes, she can sing, period. But also she can rap,\u201d says Jordan. \u201cWe call her a global pop superstar because we think that\u2019s what she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReclaiming her \u201cpocha<\/em> power,\u201d as Becky calls it, \u201cis this whole expansion of my creativity [and] really owning that I am a 200-percenter in every sense of the word. For me, being pocha is not something that hinders me or hinders anybody. It\u2019s something that adds to my music, and I\u2019m happy that I\u2019ve been able to embrace it in this [album].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile it\u2019s not new for artists to find success releasing material in both English and Spanish \u2014 veterans like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin paved the way \u2014 it\u2019s far less common for an artist to seamlessly integrate bilingual lyrics into a song, let alone across an entire album. \u201cThe only one that\u2019s done it right is Kali Uchis. \u2018Telepat\u00eda\u2019 is probably the best example of a successful [fully bilingual] song,\u201d Tischker points out. \u201cI think the world is more ready for it than it\u2019s ever been \u2026 The hardest part about Spanglish is to not feel forced, right? Because there are a lot more [Spanglish-speaking] kids here than people realize. If it feels like it\u2019s a marketing exercise, then it just won\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as Becky is concerned, \u201cIt should officially be named a language of its own,\u201d she jokes. \u201cPeople forget that language was created to communicate, to connect. Spanglish is an evolution of us 200-percenters, que no somos ni de aqu\u00ed ni de all\u00e1<\/em>, but I say, \u2018de aqu\u00ed y de all\u00e1.<\/em>\u2019 That\u2019s how my brain sounds, that\u2019s how I dream, that\u2019s how my heart speaks, that\u2019s how my creativity expresses itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now 29, Becky started her career<\/strong> 15 years ago, signing a joint record deal with Kemosabe Records and RCA Records, when producer Dr. Luke saw her cover of \u201cOtis\u201d by Jay-Z and Kanye West on YouTube. \u201cI was rapping 30 bars straight. We shot a music video \u2026 in my grandfather\u2019s garage,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt was me, my cousins and some of the directors\u2019 kids. At that time, they hadn\u2019t even graduated from film school just yet. We pulled all the favors out. It was literally one take. That\u2019s the video that changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile she was also scoring her early hits like \u201cBooty\u201d with C. Tangana and \u201cSin Pijama\u201d with Natti Natasha, Becky G also ventured into acting, most notably in Power Rangers<\/em> (2017), Gnome Alone<\/em> (2017) and A.X.L.<\/em> (2018). She has also made appearances in TV series like Empire<\/em> and Austin & Ally<\/em>. Her team teases more acting work on the way for the Inglewood native.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer rise has not been without hardship \u2014 shaped by moments of struggle and vulnerability. Her documentary Rebbeca<\/em>, which premiered last year at the Tribeca Festival, offered a glimpse into these challenges, from grappling with panic attacks before taking the stage to supporting her loved ones financially as a teenager and confronting her family\u2019s history with addiction.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s something really vulnerable in allowing yourself to be seen in that way. But it was super hard,\u201d Becky says. \u201cI think there was something really empowering in sharing my story, knowing that it\u2019s not just my story, it\u2019s a story about family. It\u2019s a story about our community,\u201d she adds. \u201cUnfortunately, we\u2019re really good at making beautiful things out of our pain. But we don\u2019t have to stay there \u2014 we can grow from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer struggle to balance her public and private life also came into focus recently, sparking backlash after Becky announced she reconciled with her longtime partner, Sebastian Lletget, following allegations of infidelity in 2023, just months after their engagement. Speaking to Billboard<\/em>, she expands on her decision to get back together with Lletget: \u201cIt\u2019s that process where everybody\u2019s journey looks different.\u201d For Becky, embracing life\u2019s ambiguities with honesty has become part of her evolution as both an artist and a person. \u201cI\u2019m proud,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not easy,\u201d says Tischker about navigating her personal life with the public. \u201cPeople are always going to hate, and they\u2019re always going to talk. But as long as you\u2019re authentic and true to who you are \u2014 no matter what you reveal \u2014 it all makes her who she is. Trials and tribulations, and how you deal with those, produce that individual, and we think that\u2019s a pretty awesome artistic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Becky G\u2019s commitment to creating safe spaces<\/strong> for healing extends beyond her personal experiences. Through her partnership with Project Healthy Minds via her film Rebbeca<\/em>, Becky advocates for mental health destigmatization in Latin communities. By partnering with this nonprofit organization, she helped amplify access to resources and support for individuals dealing with mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, substance use, relationship challenges and eating disorders. \u201cIf we\u2019re going to talk about these issues, knowing that we can also provide education and resources \u2014 the spaces our community needs \u2014 was incredibly important,\u201d says the star. \u201cWe\u2019re not meant to go through life alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhenever [Becky] receives a brand opportunity, there always has to be some type of philanthropic element to it,\u201d adds Jordan. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018How can I better help my community through this brand partnership?\u2019 Oftentimes there is some type of giveback or philanthropic element.\u201d This value-driven approach has become a hallmark of Becky\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

\n\tRecent examples include her partnership with the Save The Music Foundation to support school music programs, collaborations with This Is About Humanity (TIAH) and Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) in 2024 and her work with Cheetos on the Deja Tu Huella campaign, which funds Hispanic student scholarships. In 2023, Becky also launched her horchata-inspired \u201cSwirl-Chata\u201d smoothie at Erewhon Market, benefitting both the Just Keep Livin\u2019 Foundation and Justice for Migrant Women, organizations advocating for high school student empowerment and migrant equity.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s a pattern of giving back from an artist who understands the long game. \u201c[I believe in] fighting for your dreams. There are no shortcuts. This stuff does not happen overnight,\u201d she says. \u201cIn a time where it\u2019s so easy for things to go viral, I choose to believe the story of the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady. These things, they come and they go, but the one thing that remains is always the lessons that we learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUp next are projects tied to the FIFA 2026 World Cup, which couldn\u2019t be announced at press time. But already, Becky is championing women\u2019s sports and entrepreneurship as part-owner of Angel City Football Club, a women\u2019s soccer team based in Los Angeles. It\u2019s part of her longstanding pattern of taking the things that are closest to her and turning them global.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s about showing up and doing the work,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about believing and fighting for your dreams; supporting each other and holding that door open for other people. I know that I\u2019m not the only one, so collaboration is really important to me. Finding other people who are just as fearless, just as passionate, just as driven, no matter where they come from, it\u2019s the most inspiring part about what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n
