She also downloaded a video of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miley-cyrus\">Miley Cyrus <\/a>and pretended to be her on Chatroulette. \u201cI remember seeing something really crazy [on there]. I immediately ended the chat, but to this day, I have flashbacks,\u201d she says. \u201cI grew up on the internet, and I don\u2019t even know what kind of damage it\u2019s done to my brain \u2013 when you\u2019re young and having fun, you\u2019re not really understanding this open idea of the internet and then, boom, something can physically change your brain forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Ferreira read the script for <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death<\/span><\/em><span> \u2013 a modern reimagining of the 1978 horror classic \u2013 she immediately knew it was relevant to her own life. In the film, Ferreira plays Margot, a content moderator for a social media platform who stumbles upon a series of violent videos that appear to re-enact death scenes from the infamous film. After being told to leave the videos up, she decides to take matters into her own hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ferreira believes she manifested her role in <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death. <\/span><\/em><span>She tells me she\u2019s really good at making her dreams come true: as a teenager, she remembers posting \u201cI want to be on an HBO show\u201d on Tumblr (which, of course, happened with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/euphoria\"><em><span>Euphoria<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>). These days, she\u2019ll do moon rituals and meditate with her friends. \u201cI\u2019m not a very woo-woo person; it\u2019s more about intention and your brain and how powerful it can be,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m extremely clear. That is my strength. Since I was a little kid, I was like, \u2018I know what I\u2019m going to do\u2019.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mc6L502Ukb4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mc6L502Ukb4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Following her departure from <\/span><em><span>Euphoria, <\/span><\/em><span>Ferreira has thrown herself into the world of indie cinema, and now<\/span><span>she\u2019s finally playing the characters she\u2019s always wanted to. She has just had two very different films come out: <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death <\/span><\/em><span>and<\/span><em><span> Mile End Kicks<\/span><\/em><span>, a Canadian rom-com where she plays a music critic who gets romantically involved with members of an indie band. She\u2019s happy to be showcasing her versatility as an actor. \u201cI want people to see these films before they cast me in something next, because I was on <\/span><em><span>Euphoria<\/span><\/em><span> seven years ago, and a lot of people just see me as a goth teenager,\u201d she says. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to show a different side of me: an adult who has been doing this for a while and has found herself.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ferreira is a natural in the horror genre, perhaps because she was always \u201cvery fascinated with death\u201d. Not necessarily murder, but just the idea of the darkness of life. \u201cI think I was just born emo and got angsty early, real early,\u201d she says. \u201cI had a not-so-great childhood, growing up very impoverished and always scared about immigration [Ferreira grew up in a Brazilian immigrant household], sharing an apartment with four people in two bedrooms in Queens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To escape in childhood, Ferreira says she became interested in culture that was \u201cso outside\u201d of her life: dark comedies like <\/span><em><span>Harold and Maude<\/span><\/em><span> and scary videos online. \u201cFor really sensitive, anxious people, a horror movie can feel like an escape to a different kind of anxiety,\u201d she says. Her favourite horror movie list includes <\/span><em><span>The Poughkeepsie Tapes<\/span><\/em><span>, <\/span><em><span>The Texas Chain Saw Massacre<\/span><\/em><span>, <\/span><em><span>Suspiria<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Evil Dead.<\/span><\/em><span> \u201cWhat\u2019s smart about horror is that a lot of messaging can come through without it knocking you over the head with the PSA of it all,\u201d she says. \u201cI love the original ones, where they\u2019re basically made from cardboard, corn syrup and a dream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIn America, sex is so bad that it\u2019s banned from almost all platforms, but seeing a country get bombed and families being killed and mutilated is totally OK\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While shooting <em>Faces of Death<\/em>, Ferreira watched found footage videos and <em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em>, and listened to the true crime podcast <em>Hunting Warhead<\/em>. She was in New Orleans, which she describes as a \u201cvery witchy city\u201d, and would spend her days off at the Museum of Death or Museum of Voodoo. \u201cThe house that I was living in was haunted, and I\u2019ve never had a haunting in my life,\u201d she says. \u201cIn the middle of the night, in the laundry room, a really heavy [object] flew off the shelf.\u201d It was Ferreira\u2019s first time playing the main character, and she learned to treat shooting days as a marathon, not a sprint. She couldn\u2019t even speak to her co-star Dacre Montgomery, because they wanted their fight scenes to have real tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After filming wrapped up, Ferreira watched a lot of <\/span><em><span>SpongeBob<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>That\u2019s So Raven<\/span><\/em><span>. \u201cI did that for about four weeks,\u201d she says. \u201cThen I was diving into a PG movie about daddy issues, which is another horror for me.\u201d She had to retrain her brain (and her algorithm) away from watching horrible videos online, which she did while shooting to maintain a sense of \u201cnumbness\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Recently, according to Ferreira, <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death<\/span><\/em><span> has only become more relevant (there is a growing awareness of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2026\/feb\/05\/in-the-end-you-feel-blank-indias-female-workers-watching-hours-of-abusive-content-to-train-ai\"><span>psychological harm<\/span><\/a><span> routinely inflicted on the people tasked with scouring videos for violent and harmful content). \u201cContent moderation is not really about protecting people at all; it\u2019s about making sure that [companies] are not liable for things,\u201d she says. \u201cIn America, sex is so bad that it\u2019s banned from almost all platforms, but seeing a country get bombed and families being killed and mutilated is totally OK.\u201d She admits she\u2019s worried about her grandma being a victim of a romance scam. And her mum being reeled in by AI slop. And the younger generation in general. \u201cI used to feel like I was in a secret club, but now everyone\u2019s in the secret club of the internet, and it\u2019s not something that you can choose to see or not. It will just be in your algorithm,\u201d Ferreira says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Margot is exactly the kind of character that Ferreira wants to keep playing, because she wants to embody people who have grit. \u201cI don\u2019t always like being the person in a full face of makeup, waking up from a slumber with my hair perfectly curled,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s a time and place for that, but at this moment in my career, I\u2019ve been having fun playing these messy characters who are and look real.\u201d What that looks like next is something she\u2019s still figuring out. She also downloaded a video of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/miley-cyrus\">Miley Cyrus <\/a>and pretended to be her on Chatroulette. \u201cI remember seeing something really crazy [on there]. I immediately ended the chat, but to this day, I have flashbacks,\u201d she says. \u201cI grew up on the internet, and I don\u2019t even know what kind of damage it\u2019s done to my brain \u2013 when you\u2019re young and having fun, you\u2019re not really understanding this open idea of the internet and then, boom, something can physically change your brain forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Ferreira read the script for <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death<\/span><\/em><span> \u2013 a modern reimagining of the 1978 horror classic \u2013 she immediately knew it was relevant to her own life. In the film, Ferreira plays Margot, a content moderator for a social media platform who stumbles upon a series of violent videos that appear to re-enact death scenes from the infamous film. After being told to leave the videos up, she decides to take matters into her own hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ferreira believes she manifested her role in <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death. <\/span><\/em><span>She tells me she\u2019s really good at making her dreams come true: as a teenager, she remembers posting \u201cI want to be on an HBO show\u201d on Tumblr (which, of course, happened with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/euphoria\"><em><span>Euphoria<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>). These days, she\u2019ll do moon rituals and meditate with her friends. \u201cI\u2019m not a very woo-woo person; it\u2019s more about intention and your brain and how powerful it can be,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m extremely clear. That is my strength. Since I was a little kid, I was like, \u2018I know what I\u2019m going to do\u2019.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"mc6L502Ukb4\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mc6L502Ukb4\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Following her departure from <\/span><em><span>Euphoria, <\/span><\/em><span>Ferreira has thrown herself into the world of indie cinema, and now<\/span><span>she\u2019s finally playing the characters she\u2019s always wanted to. She has just had two very different films come out: <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death <\/span><\/em><span>and<\/span><em><span> Mile End Kicks<\/span><\/em><span>, a Canadian rom-com where she plays a music critic who gets romantically involved with members of an indie band. She\u2019s happy to be showcasing her versatility as an actor. \u201cI want people to see these films before they cast me in something next, because I was on <\/span><em><span>Euphoria<\/span><\/em><span> seven years ago, and a lot of people just see me as a goth teenager,\u201d she says. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to show a different side of me: an adult who has been doing this for a while and has found herself.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ferreira is a natural in the horror genre, perhaps because she was always \u201cvery fascinated with death\u201d. Not necessarily murder, but just the idea of the darkness of life. \u201cI think I was just born emo and got angsty early, real early,\u201d she says. \u201cI had a not-so-great childhood, growing up very impoverished and always scared about immigration [Ferreira grew up in a Brazilian immigrant household], sharing an apartment with four people in two bedrooms in Queens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To escape in childhood, Ferreira says she became interested in culture that was \u201cso outside\u201d of her life: dark comedies like <\/span><em><span>Harold and Maude<\/span><\/em><span> and scary videos online. \u201cFor really sensitive, anxious people, a horror movie can feel like an escape to a different kind of anxiety,\u201d she says. Her favourite horror movie list includes <\/span><em><span>The Poughkeepsie Tapes<\/span><\/em><span>, <\/span><em><span>The Texas Chain Saw Massacre<\/span><\/em><span>, <\/span><em><span>Suspiria<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Evil Dead.<\/span><\/em><span> \u201cWhat\u2019s smart about horror is that a lot of messaging can come through without it knocking you over the head with the PSA of it all,\u201d she says. \u201cI love the original ones, where they\u2019re basically made from cardboard, corn syrup and a dream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIn America, sex is so bad that it\u2019s banned from almost all platforms, but seeing a country get bombed and families being killed and mutilated is totally OK\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>While shooting <em>Faces of Death<\/em>, Ferreira watched found footage videos and <em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em>, and listened to the true crime podcast <em>Hunting Warhead<\/em>. She was in New Orleans, which she describes as a \u201cvery witchy city\u201d, and would spend her days off at the Museum of Death or Museum of Voodoo. \u201cThe house that I was living in was haunted, and I\u2019ve never had a haunting in my life,\u201d she says. \u201cIn the middle of the night, in the laundry room, a really heavy [object] flew off the shelf.\u201d It was Ferreira\u2019s first time playing the main character, and she learned to treat shooting days as a marathon, not a sprint. She couldn\u2019t even speak to her co-star Dacre Montgomery, because they wanted their fight scenes to have real tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After filming wrapped up, Ferreira watched a lot of <\/span><em><span>SpongeBob<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>That\u2019s So Raven<\/span><\/em><span>. \u201cI did that for about four weeks,\u201d she says. \u201cThen I was diving into a PG movie about daddy issues, which is another horror for me.\u201d She had to retrain her brain (and her algorithm) away from watching horrible videos online, which she did while shooting to maintain a sense of \u201cnumbness\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Recently, according to Ferreira, <\/span><em><span>Faces of Death<\/span><\/em><span> has only become more relevant (there is a growing awareness of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2026\/feb\/05\/in-the-end-you-feel-blank-indias-female-workers-watching-hours-of-abusive-content-to-train-ai\"><span>psychological harm<\/span><\/a><span> routinely inflicted on the people tasked with scouring videos for violent and harmful content). \u201cContent moderation is not really about protecting people at all; it\u2019s about making sure that [companies] are not liable for things,\u201d she says. \u201cIn America, sex is so bad that it\u2019s banned from almost all platforms, but seeing a country get bombed and families being killed and mutilated is totally OK.\u201d She admits she\u2019s worried about her grandma being a victim of a romance scam. And her mum being reeled in by AI slop. And the younger generation in general. \u201cI used to feel like I was in a secret club, but now everyone\u2019s in the secret club of the internet, and it\u2019s not something that you can choose to see or not. It will just be in your algorithm,\u201d Ferreira says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Margot is exactly the kind of character that Ferreira wants to keep playing, because she wants to embody people who have grit. \u201cI don\u2019t always like being the person in a full face of makeup, waking up from a slumber with my hair perfectly curled,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s a time and place for that, but at this moment in my career, I\u2019ve been having fun playing these messy characters who are and look real.\u201d What that looks like next is something she\u2019s still figuring out.
