There, I said it. For hot days, there really isn&#8217;t an alternative for guys that\u2019s as light in textile yet still as widely accepted as proper garb (versus undies). My question, then, is whether a tank top can truly count as a sartorial statement. Isn\u2019t it kind of a cop-out? Once strictly relegated for wearing beneath a button-up, ribbed undershirts are now affixed to the fashionable fuckboy&#8217;s uniform, along with flared\u00a0<strong>Acne<\/strong>\u00a0jeans\u00a0and those inescapable\u00a0<strong>Our Legacy<\/strong>\u00a0boots\u00a0that I keep shading but secretly love. Maybe it&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m bothered by the tank as much as by what I&#8217;ve been projecting onto its wearers? Despite my issues, I can acknowledge that there is an art to mastering the white tank and embracing this top\u2019s accompanying symbolism. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Tom Ford<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0clubby $600+ mesh\u00a0version brings an element of raunch to the fore that&#8217;ll white-out the white tank\u2019s origins as a mere base layer. The relaxed cut of this\u00a0<strong>Sunspel\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cvest\u201d\u00a0will do so, too, albeit by leaning into the opposite direction and teetering between standard tank and what&#8217;s better described as sleeveless tee. Despite all efforts at its modernization, there remains an ancient, off-putting\u00a0 type of masculinity innate to the male tank \u2014 as alluded to\u00a0 by its dreadful \u201cwife beater\u201d nickname and its ubiquity in certain corners of Berghain \u2014 that quite literally reeks of a machismo I don&#8217;t subscribe to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph___lU_Ty paragraph-paragraph10___Jilbr contentParagraph___u9L2Q paragraph___bcvQh\">What I&#8217;m also noticing, however, is the potential for quiet rebellion in how, where, and by whom these pieces are worn and designed. As a garment as old as the concept of modern clothes itself, neither the tank nor its appearance across a wide range of consumers is revelatory, really. So it is and isn&#8217;t\u00a0<em>that<\/em>\u00a0deep. But in an age of a\u00a0so-called \u201csex recession,\u201d an uptick in\u00a0Puritanical views, and\u00a0deepening conservatism\u00a0among young people, there remains real political merit in flaunting one&#8217;s arms, chest, and\u00a0body hair. Maybe it&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m bothered by the tank as much as by what I&#8217;ve been projecting onto its wearers? Despite my issues, I can acknowledge that there is an art to mastering the white tank and embracing this top\u2019s accompanying symbolism.
