HYBE rebranded its label as Blue Highway five days later and installed a new CEO, Jake Basden, who Cooper had met only once previously. Cooper was in line to release his sophomore single \u2013 a follow-up to \u201cWeak,\u201d which peaked at No. 26 on <em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Country Airplay chart dated Jan. 24 \u2013 but this disruption could have thwarted his plans. At age 22, Cooper was calmer than he should have been. It sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes, Joe Walsh and AC\/DC all scrambled together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s just a fun rock \u2018n\u2019 roll song,\u201d Cooper says matter-of-factly.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-youtube\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe wrote it, almost accidentally, with The Warren Brothers \u2013 Brett Warren (\u201cRed Solo Cup,\u201d \u201cIf You\u2019re Reading This\u201d) and Brad Warren (\u201cHighway Don\u2019t Care,\u201d \u201cLights Come On\u201d) \u2013 in Nashville after they\u2019d already penned \u201cDark Places,\u201d which joined \u201cWeak\u201d and \u201cOne for the Road\u201d on Cooper\u2019s 2025 debut album, <em>Toledo Talkin\u2019<\/em>. As they started closing shop, Cooper launched into an energetic acoustic guitar pattern, singing a nonsense line \u2013 \u201cI got two into something\u201d \u2013 that caught the Warren Brothers by surprise. They were writing a second song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBrad had previously saved the \u201cOne for the Road\u201d title, and it fit the \u201ctwo something\u201d phrase, so they kicked into a numerical chorus: \u201cI got two in the chamber,\u201d plus \u201cthree on the tree and four on the floor.\u201d They added phrases for nine and five, leading ultimately to the \u201cOne\u201d hook. Humorously, the \u201cfour on the floor\u201d phrase represented a drum pattern, though non-musicians may think it\u2019s as a manual auto transmission. That\u2019s also what \u201cthree on the tree\u201d represents, creating a bit of a dilemma, since a car can\u2019t have two competing transmissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAs long as you know what you\u2019re talking about, I don\u2019t think it really matters,\u201d Brett says. \u201cFans can tell it means something to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOnce that stanza was developed, they turned their attention to the opening verse, using the same \u201cI got\u2026\u201d device that launched the chorus. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have to talk it through,\u201d Brad says, \u201cbut I am a big fan of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe first \u201cI got\u201d is a mama with a \u201cdirect line to Jesus,\u201d a trait that applies to both Cooper and the Warrens. \u201cBrett and I get to write a lot about our lives in Preston\u2019s music, because when it lines up, he\u2019s into it,\u201d Brad notes. \u201cWe get to write a little bit more of our story than we did when we were making records, and it\u2019s not quite as mercenarial as some of the other things we\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe image of the religious mom established a dichotomy: Despite growing up in the church, the \u201cOne for the Road\u201d character is living hard as a musician. Many an artist \u2013 including Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Charlie Rich \u2013 has been tripped up by guilt over life on the road. Cooper, with just one album under his belt, understands why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe term \u2018sex, drugs and rock \u2018n\u2019 roll,\u2019 you know, it\u2019s all of that,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I\u2019m very religious, and I follow the Lord, so I\u2019m just trying to stay straight on Him. And I\u2019m also engaged \u2014 but it gets harder, you know? Definitely a lot of temptation out there on the road. But I\u2019ve got to stay focused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey wrote a bridge that insinuated the song\u2019s character had cleaned up his act, true to both Cooper\u2019s intent and the Warrens\u2019 real-life history. They captured the whole thing on a quick work tape with acoustic guitars, presenting that to a roomful of musicians when they cut a demo at Nashville\u2019s Sound Emporium with Brett producing. After just one listen, the players had a good idea of where to take it, with Brad handling the energetic acoustic guitar foundation. Electric guitarist Rob McNelley, meanwhile, replaced the original opening riff. He designed a growling passage inspired, Cooper says, by Walsh\u2019s \u201cLife\u2019s Been Good.\u201d They ran the song down once or twice, then did the final version with Cooper practically spitting out the lead part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIf Hank Williams Sr. and Paul Rodgers from Bad Company had a baby, it would be Preston,\u201d Brett says. \u201cHe\u2019s just got this really weird, whining rock-\u2018n\u2019-roll, old-school country thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe demo was so strong that they didn\u2019t re-record another final version. Instead, they reclassified it as a master recording and adjusted the pay for the session musicians, including drummer Evan Hutchings, bassist Steve Mackey and Hammond B3 player Billy Justineau. Cooper\u2019s vocal performance with the band worked for the final cut, though a handful of spots needed a little extra attention. Brett, still producing, pushed Cooper to increase his emotion level. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHe would come in the booth, in the studio, and rile me up,\u201d Cooper recalls. \u201cHe would hit me and stuff, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Come on, sing it! Sing it like you mean it!\u2019 He would get me kind of mad, and then he would start recording. So when I was singing the verses, I was kind of pissed off in the moment, just to get that tone, which I thought was super cool. He knew how to get to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBrett hired Crystal Taliefero, known for her work with Billy Joel and John Mellencamp, to layer in gospel-flavored harmonies. When they played the track for her, she was taken aback by Cooper\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe got up and turned around, and she said, \u2018That\u2019s you singing?\u2019\u201d Brett recaps. \u201cHe said, \u2018Yes, ma\u2019am.\u2019 And she said, \u2018Do you know Jesus?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Yes, ma\u2019am, I do.\u2019 She said, \u2018Well, you better if you going to sing like that.\u2019 And she meant it. It was such a moment.
