class=\"sf-icon-bookmark\"><\/i>Bookmark<\/button>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In folklore, twilight is often interpreted as a liminal, even magical time during which spirits emerge in the transition between light and dark. It\u2019s sometimes even seen as a period when extra caution is advised, as will-o\u2019-the-wisps, shapeshifters, and fae may try to influence people in their path. For artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholasmoegly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nicholas Moegly<\/a>, nightfall sets the scene for neighborhoods and quiet streets in which curious creatures roam, and lights flicker on in houses, signaling the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/tags\/nicholas-moegly\/\">Moegly\u2019s works<\/a> possess a dreamy realism along the lines of photographer Todd Hido\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toddhido.com\/homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Houses at Night<\/a><\/em> or the illustrations of children\u2019s book author <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Van_Allsburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris Van Allsburg<\/a>. There is both a timelessness and a sense that these locations could represent virtually anywhere around the U.S. Sometimes, deer and foxes meander through yards or down alleyways, glancing backward as if responding to a sound. In other compositions, lights shine from upper windows of a house or shop on a hazy street corner, although people are nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/moegly-4.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-473163\" title=\"\u201cA Suspended State\u201d\" data-rl_title=\"\u201cA Suspended State\u201d\" data-rl_caption=\"\u201cA Suspended State\u201d\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/moegly-4.jpg\" alt=\"an illustration by Nichols Moegly of a fox wandering in a street, illuminated by a street light at dusk\" class=\"wp-image-473167\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cA Suspended State\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Moegly is currently in the midst of the largest oil painting he\u2019s made thus far, experimenting with the relationship between scale and realism in a way that\u2019s challenging his artistic direction. He\u2019s also working toward future exhibitions, transitioning from online releases to more in-person shows.
