\n\tAs the latest musician to stop by NPR\u2019s headquarters in Washington, D.C., the folk-rocker played four songs total for the crowd gathered in the office space, two of which were unreleased tracks from upcoming new album The Great Divide<\/em>. One of them, \u201cAmerican Cars,\u201d kicked off the setlist, with Kahan singing as his rootsy band jammed out behind him, \u201cHeadlights, your plates, 4CB3A\/ Didn\u2019t know you drove American cars\/ Ray-Bans on your face, you\u2019ve been drivin\u2019 all day\/ But you\u2019re here and we\u2019re so grateful you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe went on to play his new album\u2019s lead single and title track, \u201cThe Great Divide\u201d \u2014 which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February \u2014 and \u201cOrange Juice\u201d from his 2022 breakout album, Stick Season<\/em>. \u201cUm, obviously I\u2019m stressed,\u201d he told the crowd candidly at one point. \u201cI\u2019m sweating deeply. I have makeup on. It\u2019s getting in my eyes. It\u2019s awful, but we\u2019re so honored to be here.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tKahan closed out with another unreleased track titled \u201cPaid Time Off.\u201d \u201cAnd your love is like an open flame\/ But you\u2019re a running car and I\u2019m a closed garag\u0435,\u201d he sang. \u201cSomeone once told us th\u0435re\u2019s a world out there\/ But we don\u2019t care enough to drive that far.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also told viewers, \u201cThe songs are really sad \u2026 so thank you guys for keeping your smiles on your faces.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe little item I\u2019m leaving is my Lexapro for you guys \u2014 I figured we can treat it like a take one, leave one penny system,\u201d Kahan joked, continuing the tradition of Tiny Desk <\/em>performers marking their appearance by adding a personal knickknack to NPR\u2019s overflowing shelves. \u201cTen milligrams. Severe side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe performance comes three days ahead of the release of The Great Divide <\/em>on Friday (April 24). Leading up to the album, Kahan also announced a stadium tour and dropped a documentary that partly focused on his journey with mental health.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut despite everything he\u2019s got going on, Tiny Desk <\/em>might take the cake for him. \u201cI\u2019ve wanted to do tiny desk since I knew it existed,\u201d he wrote on his Instagram Story after the episode dropped. \u201cFor some reason I just thought I never would. But here we are \u2026 this immediately becomes a life highlight.\u201d<\/p>\n
