\n\tMy first introduction to Gloria Trevi as an artist was with \u201cPelo\u00a0Suelto\u201d (1991) where I was like, \u201cThis woman is awesome.\u201d\u00a0Then I\u00a0got to know more about her with \u201cLa Papa Sin Catsup\u201d (1994) because my mom\u00a0(Jenni Rivera) covered that song [in 2003].\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0when the relationship between her and my mom started developing\u00a0because that\u2019s when Gloria was incarcerated (2000-2004). Gloria was\u00a0very grateful\u00a0that my mom did that. My mom was a fan.\u00a0They became really good friends.<\/p>\n

\n\tGloria presented my mom\u2019s\u00a0[posthumous]\u00a0Hollywood Walk of Fame Star in 2024. We asked her to speak because my mom\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have many friends in the industry, she had acquaintances. She really considered Gloria a friend. Gloria has been so great with us since the day my mom passed.<\/p>\n

\n\tI know they would talk all the time, and if they were in the same city, they would see each other. If my mom\u00a0went\u00a0to McAllen [where Gloria is based], she would go to their house \u2014 she was also\u00a0very good\u00a0friends with Armando, Gloria\u2019s husband.\u00a0When my mom needed advice, she would talk to Gloria and vice versa. They had\u00a0a very beautiful\u00a0bond.<\/p>\n

\n\tGloria and Armando were some of the first people to call us when my mom passed away (in\u00a0a plane crash in\u00a02012). She said, \u201cWhatever\u00a0you guys\u00a0need, I am here. See me like a second mother, like a friend, like a sister.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0never forget that. When Johnny, my brother, was about 11, she felt responsible for looking after us.\u00a0Johnny and her eldest son are very close.<\/p>\n

\n\tA few years later,\u00a0at an award show,\u00a0I asked Gloria\u2019s permission to\u00a0sing\u00a0\u201cPelo\u00a0Suelto,\u201d\u00a0and she said, \u201cOh my God, absolutely.\u201d And we got to perform it together! To\u00a0this day, that is one of my favorite performances.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0never forget that Gloria\u00a0said\u00a0to\u00a0me backstage, \u201cYou got this!\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not\u00a0going to\u00a0shrink myself for you because I would be doing a disservice\u00a0to\u00a0you.\u201d I was like, \u201cWow, I\u2019m\u00a0going to\u00a0step it up because I\u2019m with freaking Gloria Trevi!\u201d It was such an amazing experience.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s\u00a0another\u00a0[anecdote]\u00a0with my song \u201cLa\u00a0Malquerida,\u201d\u00a0[which]\u00a0was\u00a0actually her\u00a0song. She told me, \u201cI wrote this for a\u00a0telenovela<\/em>, but I want you to have it. Take it, record it.\u201d\u00a0It was a single [from 2025] that did pretty well.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe\u2019s\u00a0invited me to her house to have dinner, and whenever\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0in LA we try to see each other.<\/p>\n

\n\tI love that Gloria has a very distinct voice. It\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0matter where you heard\u00a0her,\u00a0you knew that\u2019s Gloria.\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0always been very outspoken in her music. She speaks about real things and sings things about female empowerment, like\u00a0in\u00a0\u201cCinco\u00a0Minutos.\u201d\u00a0No\u00a0tiene\u00a0pelos\u00a0en\u00a0la lengua<\/em>\u00a0(she\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mince words), and I love that about her. She writes her own music. She pays attention to every detail in her show.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen her draw out what she wants on stage, what she wants her costumes to look like. When she goes up on stage,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0completely different person.\u00a0And when you speak to her offstage, she\u2019s very soft-spoken and gentle.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe says\u00a0that\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0where\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0the happiest, that she gets to play and be herself [on stage]. I asked her, \u201cHow do you jump and do all these splits?\u201d\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0like, \u201cI feel something\u00a0takes over me.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0so happy and I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0feel anything.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not until I get off stage\u00a0that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like, \u2018Okay, my back hurts.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe loves what she does and\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0so passionate about it. Her whole life is about her music and her\u00a0career,\u00a0and\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0super involved in every aspect. To me as an artist,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a beautiful thing because\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0learned from her. In the beginning of my career, I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0like [I am today]. We had a few conversations,\u00a0<\/em>and she gave me a little kick. She became my music mentor.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe said, \u201cAs your [second] mother on this earth \u2014 because I know what your mom would have wanted \u2014 I\u2019ll be there to guide you through any questions you have.\u201d And she did. She helped me a lot, especially in the third and fourth years of my career. I think she did it out of the love she had for my mom and the love she began to feel for me.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut I also know what\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0been through and how hard\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been for her. She helped me so much and told me, \u201cJust as your mom helped me, I\u2019m going to help you.\u201d It was like paying it forward. Gloria has a big place in my heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
