The new Partington R-Series represents four wheels in two depths, 50mm and 65mm, with two weight variations, but the biggest news is really what Partington has been able to accomplish while also making it a little cheaper.

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

If you are at all familiar with Partington, you’ll know the company is at the tip of the spear in terms of premium wheels. Only a few brands really even compete in this space—Lightweight is probably the most well known—but the older Partington MKII 39|44 is a 21mm internal width wheel with a weight of 1160g. That wheel also uses “In-Tension Spoke Technology” which wraps the spoke around the hub then back to the rim in another location. It makes for a wheel that’s exceptionally stiff and light, but it’s also impossible to repair and very expensive. You might also notice those specs are a bit outdated.

The new wheels still have unbroken strands of carbon in the spokes but now they loop into the hub without permanent bonding into the rim. (Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

The R-Series is a distinct departure from that model. For a start, the R-Series is available in modern aero depths of 50mm or 65mm. It’s not just the depth that changes though; the rim features a 23.0mm internal width and a 34.0mm external width with hooks and a sealed rim bed. This is modern geometry that’s focused on modern tires.

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

With a shallow, 21mm-internal wheel, you essentially have to choose weight vs. aerodynamics or run a tire that no one actually uses anymore. This is because to maintain optimal airflow and prevent turbulence (meaning drag), a rim’s external width must be at least 105 percent of the tire’s measured width.

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

As we all move to wider tires for comfort and rolling resistance reasons, that means the wheels have to adapt, and Partington is adapting. By pushing the external width to 34.0mm wide, with a 50mm or 65mm depth, the brand makes sure that a 28mm or 30mm tire isn’t an aero hit. The company partnered with the SASI (South Australian Institute of Sport) to make use of the dedicated cycling wind tunnel in Adelaide, South Australia, to help verify these design choices.

There are also other things at play here, though. Part of the identity of Partington is lightweight, and these new wheels hold the line. As mentioned, there are two versions including a standard “Performance” level and a “Performance Ti” version. Weights for the variants are 1200g or 1290g for the 50mm or 65mm Performance level, and 1175g or 1265g for the lighter Performance Ti version.

Those loops are the fibers in the carbon wrapping around and continuing back to the rim. (Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

Another important part of this new wheelset is a redesign of the spokes. While the previous solution performed well, it was a challenge for livability. This time, Partington is using a replaceable composite spoke system. Other livability choices include a sealed rim bed for use without rim tape, and a hooked bead.

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

The one elephant in the room is price. The new wheels are cheaper than the previous flagship wheels, and you do get more for your money. That’s a good thing, but these still compete at a level above even the most premium larger brands. Set to launch in the US on June 1, the standard Performance line will retail for $5,500, with the Performance Ti priced at $6,500.

For more information visit the Partington Website.

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

(Photo: Josh Ross/Velo)

Josh Ross

Published April 16, 2026 07:12PM

[analyse_source url=”https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-gear/partington-wheels-sea-otter/”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://velo-cdn.outsideonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/DSC_4851.jpg”] Josh Ross Published April 16, 2026 07:12PM Welcome to Velo’s Sea Otter Classic coverage, where we share our favorite things we’ve found at the 2026 show.
