It wasn\u2019t a totally surprising direction for the producer \u2013 her debut compilation from the same year was named <\/span><em><span>Product<\/span><\/em><span>, after all, and the extended universe of hyperpop and PC Music was synonymous with glossy product launches. In any case, it clearly worked. \u201cI got the phone,\u201d admits Skip, the co-founder and programmer behind the fan-led preservation project <\/span><em><span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/home\">WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/a>,<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0whose first memorable encounter with SOPHIE came via the commercial. \u201cIn a way, I\u2019m kind of pissed off I didn\u2019t discover [her] properly,\u201d he adds, but it feels kind of apt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SOPHIE, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/51799\/1\/sophie-pioneering-producer-and-dj-has-died-aged-34-sudden-accident\">passed away<\/a> aged 34 in 2021, only released one official studio album in her lifetime, but there\u2019s a whole treasure trove of unreleased projects, live sets, leaks, and deep lore. meg, Skip\u2019s partner and co-founder of <em>WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/em><\/span><span>, cumulatively spent \u201cat least four full days\u201d trawling through old Instagram tags, Discord channels, Facebook comments, forum posts, and DMing SOPHIE fans to assemble an exhaustive archive of material, often unearthed after years in someone\u2019s camera roll. More fans have since reached out, following shoutouts from other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTI5yzAjWT0\/?img_index=1\"><span>fan<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FKAY0NCE\/status\/2039329898607652958\"><span>accounts<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"a13d1e42-5ec6-48d1-a192-b42e00cc6efc\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1824\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/3\/1443437.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Heaven, London, 2018\" class=\"img\" height=\"2736\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1600\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/3\/1443437.JPG\" width=\"1824\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photo Hannah Bowman, <span class=\"nowrap\">via WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Currently, the site hosts live sets and setlists dating back to a 2010 show at London\u2019s XOYO (other highlights, which meg reels off like a SOPHIE encyclopedia, include her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2014\/JUSTJAM\"><span>2014 Just Jam livestream<\/span><\/a><span>, her live debut at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2017\/TERAGRAM\"><span>Teragram Ballroom in 2017<\/span><\/a><span>, and her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2019\/UNSOUND\"><span>2019 Unsound set<\/span><\/a><span>). Other sections will host songs, photoshoots, and interviews in the near future. Leaked music won\u2019t be featured on site, but will be documented in an attempt to \u201cquell the rampant misinformation\u201d that surrounds much of SOPHIE\u2019s back-catalogue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both in their early twenties and based on the west coast of the US, meg and Skip balance working on the site with full-time jobs, noting that the line between fan and archivist is \u201cblurry\u201d when it comes to artists like SOPHIE. \u201c<\/span><span>When you\u2019re a fan of her work, considering so much is unreleased or confined to live sets, you\u2019re either going to listen to leaks or live sets,\u201d says meg. \u201cI do both. I\u2019m no saint!\u201d The preservation project was born out of a specific frustration, though. \u201cI was tired of stuff disappearing,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot less prevalent now, but her label would constantly copystrike stuff off the internet. Inspired by a poster that came with <\/span><em><span>Oil of Every Pearl<\/span><\/em><span>, visitors are met with stretched, blown-up text that directs them to each part of the archive. \u201cWe wanted it to feel like SOPHIE, but at the same time we didn\u2019t want to <\/span><em><span>be <\/span><\/em><span>SOPHIE,\u201d Skip explains. \u201cWe wanted to be really clear that this is a fan-led thing, out of respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re preserving someone\u2019s memories. It\u2019s really special that they are willing to share that with us\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>There were some challenges when it came to establishing the project, which went beyond the \u201ccrappy\u201d search functions on Instagram and X (SOPHIE\u2019s mononym doesn\u2019t exactly help in this department). One of the main issues was the changing nature of the internet. \u201cI sent probably 200 messages to people, if not more, and I got maybe 20 back,\u201d says meg. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of hard to reach out to people in a way that feels authentic, and not like you\u2019re a bot trying to phish them. You can\u2019t really assume people are being nice these days, on the internet.\u201d Of the responses he <\/span><em><span>did <\/span><\/em><span>receive, he adds, some people never followed up with actual footage, or had lost all of their personal archive due to broken phones or dead laptops. This shows the importance of fan preservation projects like <em>WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/em><\/span><span>, meg adds, but also the importance of archiving your own life. \u201cWe\u2019re preserving someone\u2019s memories as well, and I think it\u2019s really special that they are willing to share that with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"89760c95-3f34-4d8f-9f45-b42e00cc55aa\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/3\/1443433.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.67\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Heaven, London, 2018\" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1600\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/3\/1443433.JPG\" width=\"2000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photo Hannah Bowman, <span class=\"nowrap\">via WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>The question of who gets to pen SOPHIE&#8217;s history and shape her legacy is also a loaded subject, with posthumous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/67041\/1\/celebrate-ten-years-of-sophies-debut-album-with-unreleased-music-product\"><span>releases<\/span><\/a><span> and collaborations sometimes sparking controversy among fans. \u201cWe were definitely really sensitive to her legacy,\u201d Skip adds. \u201cFrom the beginning, it was more about democratising access.\u201d After all, not everyone has the time or resources to go on a treasure hunt for lost SOPHIE tracks. \u201cI really want her legacy to live on, as opposed to us adding anything onto it,\u201d meg agrees. \u201cI just want people to know what was already there, and what happened. I want to be able to show people: this is the artist I love. It\u2019s a pretty run-of-the-mill SOPHIE set, honestly, but there\u2019s this one song there. The fan name is \u201cCoral Reef\u201d, which I love. Its actual name is \u2018DIDDDDZZ Computer\u2019&#8230; like, what is this, girl? But that\u2019s in there, a recording of a song that people always [thought] she only played once, in this very specific set.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2016\/SWG3\"><span>SWG3 SET, GLASGOW, 2016<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><span>\u201cOnce we launched the site, someone reached out with this recording. It was really cool hearing something that nobody else has ever heard; someone\u2019s precious memory that they\u2019ve been holding onto for so long. By chance, I messaged someone in a PC Music Discord who had sent an AI Washington clip that looked cool. To my amazement, they had so many videos. I\u2019ve actually got a few comments where people were like, \u2018Thank you for bringing this back because I\u2019ve never been able to find anything on it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2015\/FOLSOM-2\"><span>1015 FOLSOM SET, SAN FRANCISCO, 2015<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><span>\u201cThis was in October of 2015. She played a set at 105 Folsom. I\u2019m jealous I didn\u2019t see her there in SF. And there were these pictures I found on Facebook, where they took a photo of her DJ deck. I feel bad snooping, but there\u2019s a file name where we could see what it says. We could barely make it out because it\u2019s really compressed and pixelated, but I could make out the words. I was like, \u2018What track is this?\u2019 Then, lo and behold, someone else had a video of the photo being taken. So now we finally know this one song, or transitional piece, that she\u2019s played a bunch, and I could finally give it a proper name in the set list. It wasn\u2019t a totally surprising direction for the producer \u2013 her debut compilation from the same year was named <\/span><em><span>Product<\/span><\/em><span>, after all, and the extended universe of hyperpop and PC Music was synonymous with glossy product launches. In any case, it clearly worked. \u201cI got the phone,\u201d admits Skip, the co-founder and programmer behind the fan-led preservation project <\/span><em><span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/home\">WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/a>,<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0whose first memorable encounter with SOPHIE came via the commercial. \u201cIn a way, I\u2019m kind of pissed off I didn\u2019t discover [her] properly,\u201d he adds, but it feels kind of apt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SOPHIE, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/51799\/1\/sophie-pioneering-producer-and-dj-has-died-aged-34-sudden-accident\">passed away<\/a> aged 34 in 2021, only released one official studio album in her lifetime, but there\u2019s a whole treasure trove of unreleased projects, live sets, leaks, and deep lore. meg, Skip\u2019s partner and co-founder of <em>WHOLENEW.WORLD<\/em><\/span><span>, cumulatively spent \u201cat least four full days\u201d trawling through old Instagram tags, Discord channels, Facebook comments, forum posts, and DMing SOPHIE fans to assemble an exhaustive archive of material, often unearthed after years in someone\u2019s camera roll. Other sections will host songs, photoshoots, and interviews in the near future. Leaked music won\u2019t be featured on site, but will be documented in an attempt to \u201cquell the rampant misinformation\u201d that surrounds much of SOPHIE\u2019s back-catalogue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both in their early twenties and based on the west coast of the US, meg and Skip balance working on the site with full-time jobs, noting that the line between fan and archivist is \u201cblurry\u201d when it comes to artists like SOPHIE. \u201c<\/span><span>When you\u2019re a fan of her work, considering so much is unreleased or confined to live sets, you\u2019re either going to listen to leaks or live sets,\u201d says meg. \u201cI do both. I\u2019m no saint!\u201d The preservation project was born out of a specific frustration, though. \u201cI was tired of stuff disappearing,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot less prevalent now, but her label would constantly copystrike stuff off the internet. Inspired by a poster that came with <\/span><em><span>Oil of Every Pearl<\/span><\/em><span>, visitors are met with stretched, blown-up text that directs them to each part of the archive. \u201cWe wanted it to feel like SOPHIE, but at the same time we didn\u2019t want to <\/span><em><span>be <\/span><\/em><span>SOPHIE,\u201d Skip explains. \u201cWe wanted to be really clear that this is a fan-led thing, out of respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re preserving someone\u2019s memories. It\u2019s really special that they are willing to share that with us\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>There were some challenges when it came to establishing the project, which went beyond the \u201ccrappy\u201d search functions on Instagram and X (SOPHIE\u2019s mononym doesn\u2019t exactly help in this department). One of the main issues was the changing nature of the internet. \u201cI sent probably 200 messages to people, if not more, and I got maybe 20 back,\u201d says meg. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of hard to reach out to people in a way that feels authentic, and not like you\u2019re a bot trying to phish them. You can\u2019t really assume people are being nice these days, on the internet.\u201d Of the responses he <\/span><em><span>did <\/span><\/em><span>receive, he adds, some people never followed up with actual footage, or had lost all of their personal archive due to broken phones or dead laptops. I want to be able to show people: this is the artist I love. Its actual name is \u2018DIDDDDZZ Computer\u2019&#8230; like, what is this, girl? But that\u2019s in there, a recording of a song that people always [thought] she only played once, in this very specific set.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/wholenew.world\/sets\/2016\/SWG3\"><span>SWG3 SET, GLASGOW, 2016<\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><span>\u201cOnce we launched the site, someone reached out with this recording. It was really cool hearing something that nobody else has ever heard; someone\u2019s precious memory that they\u2019ve been holding onto for so long. She played a set at 105 Folsom. I\u2019m jealous I didn\u2019t see her there in SF. And there were these pictures I found on Facebook, where they took a photo of her DJ deck. I feel bad snooping, but there\u2019s a file name where we could see what it says. We could barely make it out because it\u2019s really compressed and pixelated, but I could make out the words. I was like, \u2018What track is this?\u2019 Then, lo and behold, someone else had a video of the photo being taken. So now we finally know this one song, or transitional piece, that she\u2019s played a bunch, and I could finally give it a proper name in the set list. There\u2019s this one song called \u201cStructure\u201d, and people were like, \u2018She only played this song once,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Wait, she played it here, too.\u2019 I literally feel like that stupid \u2018<\/span><span>WeLL aCtuAlLy\u2019 meme. <\/span><span>But then that led to me discovering this amazing photo set that a photographer took at that party, and she looks amazing.
